Sennacherib’s Invasion

36In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria advanced against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.H702H6240H8141H4428H2396H5576H4428H804H5927H1219H5892H3063H8610
2Then the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh, along with a massive army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. The Assyrian stood near the conduit of the upper pool, by the road to the Fuller's Field.H4428H804H7971H7262H3923H3389H4428H2396H3515H2426H5975H8585H5945H1295H4546H3526H7704
3Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the record keeper, came out to him.H3318H471H2518H1121H1004H7644H5608H3098H623H1121H2142
4The Rabshakeh said to them, "Tell Hezekiah: The great king, the king of Assyria, says this: 'What are you basing your confidence on?H7262H559H559H2396H559H1419H4428H4428H804H986H982
5I say that your plans and military preparedness are mere words. Now who are you trusting in that you have rebelled against me?H559H8193H1697H6098H1369H4421H982H4775
6Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which will enter and pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who trust in him.H982H4938H7533H7070H4714H376H5564H935H3709H5344H6547H4428H4714H982
7Suppose you say to me: We trust in the LORD our God. Isn't He the One whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem: You are to worship at this altar?H559H982H3068H430H1116H4196H2396H5493H559H3063H3389H7812H6440H4196
8Now make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I'll give you 2,000 horses if you can put riders on them!H6148H113H4428H804H5414H505H5483H3201H5414H7392
9How then can you repel [the attack of even] the weakest of my master's officers, and trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?H7725H6440H259H6346H6996H113H5650H982H4714H7393H6571
10Have I attacked this land to destroy it without the LORD's [approval]? The LORD said to me, 'Attack this land and destroy it.'"H5927H1107H3068H776H7843H3068H559H5927H776H7843
11Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand [it]; don't speak to us in Hebrew within earshot of the people who are on the wall."H559H471H7644H3098H7262H1696H5650H762H8085H1696H3066H241H5971H2346
12But the Rabshakeh replied, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men who sit on the wall, [who are destined] with you to eat their excrement and drink their urine?"H7262H559H113H7971H113H1696H1697H582H3427H2346H398H2716H6675H8354H4325H7272H7890
13Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: Listen to the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!H7262H5975H7121H1419H6963H3066H559H8085H1697H1419H4428H4428H804
14The king says: "Don't let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot deliver you.H559H4428H2396H5377H3201H5337
15Don't let Hezekiah persuade you to trust the LORD, saying, 'The LORD will surely deliver us. This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.'"H2396H982H3068H559H3068H5337H5337H5892H5414H3027H4428H804
16Don't listen to Hezekiah. For the king of Assyria says: "Make peace with me and surrender to me; then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree and drink water from his own cisternH8085H2396H559H4428H804H6213H1293H3318H398H376H1612H376H8384H8354H376H4325H953
17until I come and take you away to a land like your land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.H935H3947H776H776H776H1715H8492H776H3899H3754
18[Beware] that Hezekiah does not mislead you by saying, 'The LORD will deliver us.' Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?H2396H5496H559H3068H5337H376H430H1471H5337H776H3027H4428H804
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?H430H2574H774H430H5617H5337H8111H3027
20Who of all the gods of these lands [ever] delivered his land from my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem?"H430H776H5337H776H3027H3068H5337H3389H3027
21But they were silent and did not answer him at all, for the king's command was, "Don't answer him."H2790H6030H1697H4428H4687H559H6030
22Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the record keeper, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and they reported to him the words of the Rabshakeh.H935H471H1121H2518H1004H7644H5608H3098H1121H623H2142H2396H899H7167H5046H1697H7262
