Isaiah Assures Deliverance

37And so it was, when King Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.H4428H2396H8085H7167H899H3680H8242H935H1004H3068 2Then he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz.H7971H471H1004H7644H5608H2205H3548H3680H8242H3470H5030H1121H531 3And they said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah: 'This day is a day of trouble and rebuke and blasphemy; for the children have come to birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.H559H559H2396H3117H3117H6869H8433H5007H1121H935H4866H3581H3205 4'It may be that the LORD your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.'"H3068H430H8085H1697H7262H4428H804H113H7971H2778H2416H430H3198H1697H3068H430H8085H5375H8605H7611H4672 5So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.H5650H4428H2396H935H3470 6And Isaiah said to them, "Thus shall you say to your master, 'Thus says the LORD: "Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.H3470H559H559H113H559H3068H3372H6440H1697H8085H5288H4428H804H1442 7"Surely I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land."'"H5414H7307H8085H8052H7725H776H5307H2719H776

Sennacherib’s Threat and Hezekiah’s Prayer

8Then the Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he heard that he had departed from Lachish.H7262H7725H4672H4428H804H3898H3841H8085H5265H3923 9And the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "He has come out to make war with you." So when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,H8085H559H8640H4428H3568H3318H3898H8085H7971H4397H2396H559 10"Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, "Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."H559H2396H4428H3063H559H430H982H5377H559H3389H5414H3027H4428H804 11'Look! You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by utterly destroying them; and shall you be delivered?H8085H4428H804H6213H776H2763H5337 12'Have the gods of the nations delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, Gozan and Haran and Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?H430H1471H5337H1H7843H1470H2771H7530H1121H5729H8515 13'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?'"H4428H2574H4428H774H4428H5892H5617H2012H5755 14And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.H2396H3947H5612H3027H4397H7121H2396H5927H1004H3068H6566H6440H3068 15Then Hezekiah prayed to the LORD, saying:H2396H6419H3068H559 16"O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, the One who dwells between the cherubim, You are God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.H3068H6635H430H3478H3427H3742H430H4467H776H6213H8064H776 17"Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to reproach the living God.H5186H241H3068H8085H6491H5869H3068H7200H8085H1697H5576H7971H2778H2416H430 18"Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands,H551H3068H4428H804H2717H776H776 19"and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands—wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.H5414H430H784H430H4639H120H3027H6086H68H6 20"Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the LORD, You alone."H3068H430H3467H3027H4467H776H3045H3068

The Word of the Lord Concerning Sennacherib

21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Because you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,H3470H1121H531H7971H2396H559H559H3068H430H3478H6419H5576H4428H804 22'this is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him: "The virgin, the daughter of Zion, Has despised you, laughed you to scorn; The daughter of Jerusalem Has shaken her head behind your back!H1697H3068H1696H1330H1323H6726H959H3932H1323H3389H5128H7218H310 23"Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice, And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.H2778H1442H7311H6963H5375H5869H4791H6918H3478 24By your servants you have reproached the Lord, And said, 'By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, To the limits of Lebanon; I will cut down its tall cedars And its choice cypress trees; I will enter its farthest height, To its fruitful forest.H3027H5650H2778H136H559H7230H7393H5927H4791H2022H3411H3844H3772H6967H730H4005H1265H935H4791H7093H3293H3760 25I have dug and drunk water, And with the soles of my feet I have dried up All the brooks of defense.'H6979H8354H4325H3709H6471H2717H2975H4693 26"Did you not hear long ago How I made it, From ancient times that I formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, That you should be For crushing fortified cities into heaps of ruins.H8085H7350H6213H6924H3117H3335H935H7582H1219H5892H5327H1530 27Therefore their inhabitants had little power; They were dismayed and confounded; They were as the grass of the field And the green herb, As the grass on the housetops And grain blighted before it is grown.H3427H7116H3027H2865H954H6212H7704H3419H1877H2682H1406H7709H6440H7054 28"But I know your dwelling place, Your going out and your coming in, And your rage against Me.H3045H3427H3318H935H7264 29Because your rage against Me and your tumult Have come up to My ears, Therefore I will put My hook in your nose And My bridle in your lips, And I will turn you back By the way which you came."'H7264H7600H5927H241H7760H2397H639H4964H8193H7725H1870H935 30"This shall be a sign to you: You shall eat this year such as grows of itself, And the second year what springs from the same; Also in the third year sow and reap, Plant vineyards and eat the fruit of them.H226H398H8141H5599H8145H8141H7823H7992H8141H2232H7114H5193H3754H398H6529 31And the remnant who have escaped of the house of Judah Shall again take root downward, And bear fruit upward.H7604H6413H1004H3063H3254H8328H4295H6213H6529H4605 32For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, And those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.H3389H3318H7611H6413H2022H6726H7068H3068H6635H6213 33"Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor build a siege mound against it.H559H3068H4428H804H935H5892H3384H2671H6923H4043H8210H5550 34By the way that he came, By the same shall he return; And he shall not come into this city,' Says the LORD.H1870H935H7725H935H5892H5002H3068 35'For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake and for My servant David's sake.'"H1598H5892H3467H5650H1732

36Then the angel of the LORD went out, and killed in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when people arose early in the morning, there were the corpses—all dead.H4397H3068H3318H5221H4264H804H3967H8084H2568H505H7925H1242H4191H6297 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.H5576H4428H804H5265H3212H7725H3427H5210 38Now it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Then Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.H7812H1004H5268H430H152H8272H1121H5221H2719H4422H776H780H634H1121H4427
