Hezekiah Consults Isaiah

37When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.H4428H2396H8085H7167H899H3680H8242H935H1004H3068 2And he sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.H7971H471H1004H7644H5608H2205H3548H3680H8242H3470H5030H1121H531 3They said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.H559H559H2396H3117H3117H6869H8433H5007H1121H935H4866H3581H3205 4It may be that the LORD your God heard the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the LORD your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left."H3068H430H8085H1697H7262H4428H804H113H7971H2778H2416H430H3198H1697H3068H430H8085H5375H8605H7611H4672 5When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah,H5650H4428H2396H935H3470 6Isaiah said to them, "Say to your master, 'Thus says the LORD: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled me.H3470H559H559H113H559H3068H3372H6440H1697H8085H5288H4428H804H1442 7I myself will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land; I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.'"H5414H7307H8085H8052H7725H776H5307H2719H776 8The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah; for he had heard that the king had left Lachish.H7262H7725H4672H4428H804H3898H3841H8085H5265H3923 9Now the king heard concerning King Tirhakah of Ethiopia, "He has set out to fight against you." When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,H8085H559H8640H4428H3568H3318H3898H8085H7971H4397H2396H559 10"Thus shall you speak to King Hezekiah of Judah: Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.H559H2396H4428H3063H559H430H982H5377H559H3389H5414H3027H4428H804 11See, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, destroying them utterly. Shall you be delivered?H8085H4428H804H6213H776H2763H5337 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my predecessors destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?H430H1471H5337H1H7843H1470H2771H7530H1121H5729H8515 13Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?"H4428H2574H4428H774H4428H5892H5617H2012H5755

Hezekiah’s Prayer

14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD.H2396H3947H5612H3027H4397H7121H2396H5927H1004H3068H6566H6440H3068 15And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD, saying:H2396H6419H3068H559 16"O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, who are enthroned above the cherubim, you are God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.H3068H6635H430H3478H3427H3742H430H4467H776H6213H8064H776 17Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; hear all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God.H5186H241H3068H8085H6491H5869H3068H7200H8085H1697H5576H7971H2778H2416H430 18Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands,H551H3068H4428H804H2717H776H776 19and have hurled their gods into the fire, though they were no gods, but the work of human hands—wood and stone—and so they were destroyed.H5414H430H784H430H4639H120H3027H6086H68H6 20So now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are the LORD."H3068H430H3467H3027H4467H776H3045H3068 21Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying: "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Because you have prayed to me concerning King Sennacherib of Assyria,H3470H1121H531H7971H2396H559H559H3068H430H3478H6419H5576H4428H804 22this is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: She despises you, she scorns you—virgin daughter Zion; she tosses her head—behind your back, daughter Jerusalem.H1697H3068H1696H1330H1323H6726H959H3932H1323H3389H5128H7218H310 23Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and haughtily lifted your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!H2778H1442H7311H6963H5375H5869H4791H6918H3478 24By your servants you have mocked the Lord, and you have said, 'With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon; I felled its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses; I came to its remotest height, its densest forest.H3027H5650H2778H136H559H7230H7393H5927H4791H2022H3411H3844H3772H6967H730H4005H1265H935H4791H7093H3293H3760 25I dug wells and drank waters, I dried up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt.'H6979H8354H4325H3709H6471H2717H2975H4693 26Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins,H8085H7350H6213H6924H3117H3335H935H7582H1219H5892H5327H1530 27while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded; they have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown.H3427H7116H3027H2865H954H6212H7704H3419H1877H2682H1406H7709H6440H7054 28I know your rising up and your sitting down, your going out and coming in, and your raging against me.H3045H3427H3318H935H7264 29Because you have raged against me and your arrogance has come to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth; I will turn you back on the way by which you came.H7264H7600H5927H241H7760H2397H639H4964H8193H7725H1870H935 30"And this shall be the sign for you: This year eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs from that; then in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.H226H398H8141H5599H8145H8141H7823H7992H8141H2232H7114H5193H3754H398H6529 31The surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward;H7604H6413H1004H3063H3254H8328H4295H6213H6529H4605 32for from Jerusalem a remnant shall go out, and from Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.H3389H3318H7611H6413H2022H6726H7068H3068H6635H6213 33"Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city, shoot an arrow there, come before it with a shield, or cast up a siege ramp against it.H559H3068H4428H804H935H5892H3384H2671H6923H4043H8210H5550 34By the way that he came, by the same he shall return; he shall not come into this city, says the LORD.H1870H935H7725H935H5892H5002H3068 35For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David."H1598H5892H3467H5650H1732

Sennacherib’s Defeat and Death

36Then the angel of the LORD set out and struck down one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians; when morning dawned, they were all dead bodies.H4397H3068H3318H5221H4264H804H3967H8084H2568H505H7925H1242H4191H6297 37Then King Sennacherib of Assyria left, went home, and lived at Nineveh.H5576H4428H804H5265H3212H7725H3427H5210 38As he was worshiping in the house of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped into the land of Ararat. His son Esar-haddon succeeded him.H7812H1004H5268H430H152H8272H1121H5221H2719H4422H776H780H634H1121H4427
