Isaiah 58
The Message Help
58"Shout! A full-throated shout! Hold nothing back—a trumpet-blast shout! Tell my people what's wrong with their lives, face my family Jacob with their sins!H7121H1627H2820H7311H6963H7782H5046H5971H6588H1004H3290H2403 2They're busy, busy, busy at worship, and love studying all about me. To all appearances they're a nation of right-living people— law-abiding, God-honoring. They ask me, 'What's the right thing to do?' and love having me on their side.H1875H3117H3117H2654H1847H1870H1471H6213H6666H5800H4941H430H7592H4941H6664H2654H7132H430 3But they also complain, 'Why do we fast and you don't look our way? Why do we humble ourselves and you don't even notice?' "Well, here's why: "The bottom line on your 'fast days' is profit. You drive your employees much too hard.H6684H7200H6031H5315H3045H3117H6685H4672H2656H5065H6092 4You fast, but at the same time you bicker and fight. You fast, but you swing a mean fist. The kind of fasting you do won't get your prayers off the ground.H6684H7379H4683H5221H106H7562H6684H3117H6963H8085H4791 5Do you think this is the kind of fast day I'm after: a day to show off humility? To put on a pious long face and parade around solemnly in black? Do you call that fasting, a fast day that I, GOD, would like?H6685H977H3117H120H6031H5315H3721H7218H100H3331H8242H665H7121H2088H6685H7522H3117H3068 6"This is the kind of fast day I'm after: to break the chains of injustice, get rid of exploitation in the workplace, free the oppressed, cancel debts.H6685H977H6605H2784H7562H5425H4133H92H7533H7971H2670H5423H4133 7What I'm interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families.H6536H3899H7457H935H6041H4788H1004H7200H6174H3680H5956H1320 8Do this and the lights will turn on, and your lives will turn around at once. Your righteousness will pave your way. The GOD of glory will secure your passage.H216H1234H7837H724H6779H4120H6664H1980H6440H3519H3068H622 9Then when you pray, GOD will answer. You'll call out for help and I'll say, 'Here I am.' "If you get rid of unfair practices, quit blaming victims, quit gossiping about other people's sins,H7121H3068H6030H7768H559H5493H8432H4133H7971H676H1696H205 10If you are generous with the hungry and start giving yourselves to the down-and-out, Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness, your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight.H6329H5315H7457H7646H6031H5315H216H2224H2822H653H6672 11I will always show you where to go. I'll give you a full life in the emptiest of places— firm muscles, strong bones. You'll be like a well-watered garden, a gurgling spring that never runs dry.H3068H5148H8548H7646H5315H6710H2502H6106H7302H1588H4161H4325H4325H3576 12You'll use the old rubble of past lives to build anew, rebuild the foundations from out of your past. You'll be known as those who can fix anything, restore old ruins, rebuild and renovate, make the community livable again.H1129H5769H2723H6965H4146H1755H1755H7121H1443H6556H7725H5410H3427 13"If you watch your step on the Sabbath and don't use my holy day for personal advantage, If you treat the Sabbath as a day of joy, GOD's holy day as a celebration, If you honor it by refusing 'business as usual,' making money, running here and there—H7725H7272H7676H6213H2656H6944H3117H7121H7676H6027H6918H3068H3513H3513H6213H1870H4672H2656H1696H1697 14Then you'll be free to enjoy GOD! Oh, I'll make you ride high and soar above it all. I'll make you feast on the inheritance of your ancestor Jacob." Yes! GOD says so!H6026H3068H7392H1116H776H398H5159H3290H1H6310H3068H1696
