The Potter and the Clay

18The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:H1697H3414H3068H559 2"Come, go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words."H6965H3381H3335H1004H8085H1697 3So I went down to the potter's house, and there he was working at his wheel.H3381H3335H1004H2009H6213H4399H70 4The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as seemed good to him.H3627H6213H2563H7843H3027H3335H6213H7725H312H3627H5869H3474H3335H6213 5Then the word of the LORD came to me:H1697H3068H559 6Can I not do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done? says the LORD. Just like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.H1004H3478H3201H6213H3335H5002H3068H2563H3335H3027H3027H1004H3478 7At one moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it,H7281H1696H1471H4467H5428H5422H6 8but if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will change my mind about the disaster that I intended to bring on it.H1471H1696H7725H7451H5162H7451H2803H6213 9And at another moment I may declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it,H7281H1696H1471H4467H1129H5193 10but if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will change my mind about the good that I had intended to do to it.H6213H7451H5869H8085H6963H5162H2896H559H3190 11Now, therefore, say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Thus says the LORD: Look, I am a potter shaping evil against you and devising a plan against you. Turn now, all of you from your evil way, and amend your ways and your doings.H559H376H3063H3427H3389H559H559H3068H3335H7451H2803H4284H7725H376H7451H1870H1870H4611H3190

Israel’s Stubborn Idolatry

12But they say, "It is no use! We will follow our own plans, and each of us will act according to the stubbornness of our evil will."H559H2976H3212H310H4284H376H6213H8307H7451H3820 13Therefore thus says the LORD: Ask among the nations: Who has heard the like of this? The virgin Israel has done a most horrible thing.H559H3068H7592H1471H8085H1330H3478H6213H3966H8186 14Does the snow of Lebanon leave the crags of Sirion? Do the mountain waters run dry, the cold flowing streams?H5800H7950H3844H6697H7704H7119H5140H4325H2114H5428 15But my people have forgotten me, they burn offerings to a delusion; they have stumbled in their ways, in the ancient roads, and have gone into bypaths, not the highway,H5971H7911H6999H7723H3782H1870H5769H7635H7635H3212H5410H1870H5549 16making their land a horror, a thing to be hissed at forever. All who pass by it are horrified and shake their heads.H7760H776H8047H5769H8292H8292H5674H8074H5110H7218 17Like the wind from the east, I will scatter them before the enemy. I will show them my back, not my face, in the day of their calamity.H6327H6921H7307H6440H341H7200H6203H6440H3117H343

A Plot against Jeremiah

18Then they said, "Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah—for instruction shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us bring charges against him, and let us not heed any of his words."H559H3212H2803H4284H3414H8451H6H3548H6098H2450H1697H5030H3212H5221H3956H7181H1697 19Give heed to me, O LORD, and listen to what my adversaries say!H7181H3068H8085H6963H3401 20Is evil a recompense for good? Yet they have dug a pit for my life. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.H7451H7999H2896H3738H7745H5315H2142H5975H6440H1696H2896H7725H2534 21Therefore give their children over to famine; hurl them out to the power of the sword, let their wives become childless and widowed. May their men meet death by pestilence, their youths be slain by the sword in battle.H5414H1121H7458H5064H3027H2719H802H7909H490H582H2026H4194H970H5221H2719H4421 22May a cry be heard from their houses, when you bring the marauder suddenly upon them! For they have dug a pit to catch me, and laid snares for my feet.H2201H8085H1004H935H1416H6597H3738H7745H7882H3920H2934H6341H7272 23Yet you, O LORD, know all their plotting to kill me. Do not forgive their iniquity, do not blot out their sin from your sight. Let them be tripped up before you; deal with them while you are angry.H3068H3045H6098H4194H3722H5771H4229H2403H6440H3782H6440H6213H6256H639
