Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur

20Now the priest Pashhur son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.H6583H1121H564H3548H6496H5057H1004H3068H8085H3414H5012H1697 2Then Pashhur struck the prophet Jeremiah, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin Gate of the house of the LORD.H6583H5221H3414H5030H5414H4115H5945H8179H1144H1004H3068 3The next morning when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, The LORD has named you not Pashhur but "Terror-all-around."H4283H6583H3318H3414H4115H559H3414H3068H7121H8034H6583H4036 4For thus says the LORD: I am making you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon; he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall kill them with the sword.H559H3068H5414H4032H157H5307H2719H341H5869H7200H5414H3063H3027H4428H894H1540H894H5221H2719 5I will give all the wealth of this city, all its gains, all its prized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them, and seize them, and carry them to Babylon.H5414H2633H5892H3018H3366H214H4428H3063H5414H3027H341H962H3947H935H894 6And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, shall go into captivity, and to Babylon you shall go; there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.H6583H3427H1004H3212H7628H935H894H4191H6912H157H5012H8267

Jeremiah Denounces His Persecutors

7O LORD, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.H3068H6601H6601H2388H3201H7814H3117H3932 8For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, "Violence and destruction!" For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.H1767H1696H2199H7121H2555H7701H1697H3068H2781H7047H3117 9If I say, "I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name," then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.H559H2142H1696H8034H3820H1197H784H6113H6106H3811H3557H3201 10For I hear many whispering: "Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!" All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. "Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him."H8085H1681H7227H4032H5439H5046H5046H582H7965H8104H6763H6761H6601H3201H3947H5360 11But the LORD is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten.H3068H1368H6184H7291H3782H3201H3966H954H7919H5769H3639H7911 12O LORD of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind; let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause.H3068H6635H974H6662H7200H3629H3820H7200H5360H1540H7379 13Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.H7891H3068H1984H3068H5337H5315H34H3027H7489 14Cursed be the day on which I was born! The day when my mother bore me, let it not be blessed!H779H3117H3205H3117H517H3205H1288 15Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, saying, "A child is born to you, a son," making him very glad.H779H376H1319H1H559H2145H1121H3205H8055H8055 16Let that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without pity; let him hear a cry in the morning and an alarm at noon,H376H5892H3068H2015H5162H8085H2201H1242H8643H6256H6672 17because he did not kill me in the womb; so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb forever great.H4191H7358H517H6913H7358H5769H2030 18Why did I come forth from the womb to see toil and sorrow, and spend my days in shame?H3318H7358H7200H5999H3015H3117H3615H1322
