Jeremiah 34
Today's New International Version Help
34While Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms and peoples in the empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem and all its surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:H1697H3414H3068H5019H4428H894H2428H4467H776H3027H4475H5971H3898H3389H5892H559
2"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Go to Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him, 'This is what the LORD says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.H559H3068H430H3478H1980H559H6667H4428H3063H559H559H3068H5414H5892H3027H4428H894H8313H784
3You will not escape from his grasp but will surely be captured and given into his hands. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will speak with you face to face. And you will go to Babylon.H4422H3027H8610H8610H5414H3027H5869H7200H5869H4428H894H1696H6310H6310H935H894
4" 'Yet hear the LORD's promise to you, Zedekiah king of Judah. This is what the LORD says concerning you: You will not die by the sword;H8085H1697H3068H6667H4428H3063H559H3068H4191H2719
5you will die peacefully. As people made a funeral fire in honor of your ancestors, the former kings who preceded you, so they will make a fire in your honor and lament, "Alas, master!" I myself make this promise, declares the LORD.' "H4191H7965H4955H1H7223H4428H6440H8313H5594H1945H113H1696H1697H5002H3068
6Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,H3414H5030H1696H1697H6667H4428H3063H3389
7while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah that were still holding out—Lachish and Azekah. These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.H4428H894H2428H3898H3389H5892H3063H3498H3923H5825H4013H5892H7604H5892H3063
8The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim freedom for the slaves.H1697H3414H3068H310H4428H6667H3772H1285H5971H3389H7121H1865
9Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and female; no one was to hold another Jew in bondage.H376H5650H376H8198H5680H5680H7971H2670H5647H3064H251
10So all the officials and people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage. They agreed, and set them free.H8269H5971H935H1285H8085H376H5650H376H8198H7971H2670H5647H8085H7971
11But afterward they changed their minds and took back the slaves they had freed and enslaved them again.H310H7725H5650H8198H7971H2670H7725H3533H3533H5650H8198
12Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:H1697H3068H3414H3068H559
13"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. I said,H559H3068H430H3478H3772H1285H1H3117H3318H776H4714H1004H5650H559
14'Every seventh year each of you must free any other Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you six years, you must let them go free.' Your ancestors, however, did not listen to me or pay attention to me.H7093H7651H8141H7971H376H251H5680H4376H5647H8337H8141H7971H2670H1H8085H5186H241
15Recently you repented and did what is right in my sight: Each of you proclaimed freedom to your own people. You even made a covenant before me in the house that bears my Name.H3117H7725H6213H3477H5869H7121H1865H376H7453H3772H1285H6440H1004H7121H8034
16But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.H7725H2490H8034H376H5650H376H8198H7971H2670H5315H7725H3533H5650H8198
17"Therefore, this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim 'freedom' for you, declares the LORD—'freedom' to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.H559H3068H8085H7121H1865H376H251H376H7453H7121H1865H5002H3068H2719H1698H7458H5414H2189H2113H4467H776
18Those who have violated my covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two and then walked between its pieces.H5414H582H5674H1285H6965H1697H1285H3772H6440H3772H5695H8147H5674H1335
19The leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests and all the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the calf,H8269H3063H8269H3389H5631H3548H5971H776H5674H1335H5695
20I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.H5414H3027H341H3027H1245H5315H5038H3978H5775H8064H929H776
21"I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives, to the army of the king of Babylon, which has withdrawn from you.H6667H4428H3063H8269H5414H3027H341H3027H1245H5315H3027H4428H894H2428H5927
22I am going to give the order, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take it and burn it down. And I will lay waste the towns of Judah so no one can live there."H6680H5002H3068H7725H5892H3898H3920H8313H784H5414H5892H3063H8077H3427
