Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple

36And it came about in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,H7243H8141H3079H1121H2977H4428H3063H1697H3414H3068H559 2"Take a scroll and write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel, and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I [first] spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.H3947H4039H5612H3789H1697H1696H3478H3063H1471H3117H1696H3117H2977H3117 3"Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity which I plan to bring on them, in order that every man will turn from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin."H1004H3063H8085H7451H2803H6213H7725H376H7451H1870H5545H5771H2403 4Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which He had spoken to him, on a scroll.H3414H7121H1263H1121H5374H1263H3789H6310H3414H1697H3068H1696H4039H5612 5And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, "I am restricted; I cannot go into the house of the LORD.H3414H6680H1263H559H6113H3201H935H1004H3068 6"So you go and read from the scroll which you have written at my dictation the words of the LORD to the people in the Lord's house on a fast day. And also you shall read them to all [the people of] Judah who come from their cities.H935H7121H4039H3789H6310H1697H3068H241H5971H3068H1004H6685H3117H7121H241H3063H935H5892 7"Perhaps their supplication will come before the LORD, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and the wrath that the LORD has pronounced against this people."H5307H8467H6440H3068H7725H376H7451H1870H1419H639H2534H3068H1696H5971 8And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the LORD in the Lord's house.H1263H1121H5374H6213H3414H5030H6680H7121H5612H1697H3068H3068H1004 9Now it came about in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the LORD.H2549H8141H3079H1121H2977H4428H3063H8671H2320H7121H6685H6440H3068H5971H3389H5971H935H5892H3063H3389 10Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord's house, to all the people.H7121H1263H5612H1697H3414H1004H3068H3957H1587H1121H8227H5608H5945H2691H6607H2319H8179H3068H1004H241H5971 11Now when Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the LORD from the book,H4321H1121H1587H1121H8227H8085H5612H1697H3068 12he went down to the king's house, into the scribe's chamber. And, behold, all the officials were sitting there— Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the [other] officials.H3381H4428H1004H5608H3957H8269H3427H476H5608H1806H1121H8098H494H1121H5907H1587H1121H8227H6667H1121H2608H8269 13And Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read from the book to the people.H4321H5046H1697H8085H1263H7121H5612H241H5971 14Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, "Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come." So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and went to them.H8269H7971H3065H1121H5418H1121H8018H1121H3570H1263H559H3947H3027H4039H7121H241H5971H3212H1263H1121H5374H3947H4039H3027H935 15And they said to him, "Sit down please, and read it to us." So Baruch read it to them.H559H3427H7121H241H1263H7121H241 16Now it came about when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one to another and said to Baruch, "We will surely report all these words to the king."H8085H1697H6342H413H376H7453H559H1263H5046H5046H4428H1697 17And they asked Baruch, saying, "Tell us please, how did you write all these words? [Was it] at his dictation?"H7592H1263H559H5046H3789H1697H6310 18Then Baruch said to them, "He dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book."H1263H559H7121H1697H6310H3789H1773H5612 19Then the officials said to Baruch, "Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are."H559H8269H1263H3212H5641H3414H376H3045H375

The Scroll Is Burned

20So they went to the king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and they reported all the words to the king.H935H4428H2691H6485H4039H3957H476H5608H5046H1697H241H4428 21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stood beside the king.H4428H7971H3065H3947H4039H3947H476H5608H3957H3065H7121H241H4428H241H8269H5975H5921H4428 22Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with [a fire] burning in the brazier before him.H4428H3427H1004H2779H8671H2320H254H1197H6440 23And it came about, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, [the king] cut it with a scribe's knife and threw [it] into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.H3065H7121H7969H702H1817H7167H8593H5608H7993H784H254H4039H8552H784H254 24Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, nor did they rend their garments.H6342H7167H899H4428H5650H8085H1697 25Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah entreated the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.H494H1806H1587H6293H4428H8313H4039H8085 26And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the LORD hid them.H4428H6680H3396H1121H4429H8304H1121H5837H8018H1121H5655H3947H1263H5608H3414H5030H3068H5641

The Scroll Is Replaced

27Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll and the words which Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying,H1697H3068H3414H310H4428H8313H4039H1697H1263H3789H6310H3414H559 28"Take again another scroll and write on it all the former words that were on the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned.H3947H7725H312H4039H3789H7223H1697H7223H4039H3079H4428H3063H8313 29"And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, 'Thus says the LORD," You have burned this scroll, saying,' Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall make man and beast to cease from it? '"H559H3079H4428H3063H559H3068H8313H4039H559H3789H559H4428H894H935H935H7843H776H7673H120H929 30'Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, "He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.H559H3068H3079H4428H3063H3427H3678H1732H5038H7993H3117H2721H3915H7140 31"I shall also punish him and his descendants and his servants for their iniquity, and I shall bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the calamity that I have declared to them— but they did not listen." '"H6485H2233H5650H5771H935H3427H3389H376H3063H7451H1696H8085 32Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neraiah, the scribe, and he wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.H3947H3414H312H4039H5414H1263H5608H1121H5374H3789H6310H3414H1697H5612H3079H4428H3063H8313H784H3254H7227H1992H1697
