Zedekiah’s Vain Hope

37Now King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.H4428H6667H1121H2977H4427H3659H1121H3079H5019H4428H894H4427H776H3063 2But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the LORD which He spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.H5650H5971H776H8085H1697H3068H1696H3027H5030H3414 3And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "Pray now to the LORD our God for us."H6667H4428H7971H3081H1121H8018H6846H1121H4641H3548H5030H3414H559H6419H3068H430 4Now Jeremiah was coming and going among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.H3414H935H3318H8432H5971H5414H1004H3628 5Then Pharaoh's army came up from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.H6547H2428H3318H4714H3778H6696H3389H8085H8088H5927H3389 6Then the word of the LORD came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,H1697H3068H5030H3414H559 7"Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Thus you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me: "Behold, Pharaoh's army which has come up to help you will return to Egypt, to their own land.H559H3068H430H3478H559H4428H3063H7971H1875H6547H2428H3318H5833H7725H4714H776 8"And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city, and take it and burn it with fire."'H3778H7725H3898H5892H3920H8313H784 9"Thus says the LORD: 'Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans will surely depart from us," for they will not depart.H559H3068H5377H5315H559H3778H1980H3212H3212 10'For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.'"H5221H2428H3778H3898H7604H1856H582H6965H376H168H8313H5892H784

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11And it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans left the siege of Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,H2428H3778H5927H3389H6440H6547H2428 12that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people.H3414H3318H3389H3212H776H1144H2505H8432H5971 13And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are defecting to the Chaldeans!"H8179H1144H1167H6488H8034H3376H1121H8018H1121H2608H8610H3414H5030H559H5307H3778 14Then Jeremiah said, "False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans." But he did not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes.H559H3414H8267H5307H3778H8085H3376H8610H3414H935H8269 15Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.H8269H7107H3414H5221H5414H612H1004H3083H5608H6213H3608 16When Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days,H3414H935H1004H953H2588H3414H3427H7227H3117 17then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, "Is there any word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is." Then he said, "You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!"H6667H4428H7971H3947H4428H7592H5643H1004H559H1697H3068H3414H559H3426H559H5414H3027H4428H894 18Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What offense have I committed against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?H3414H559H4428H6667H2398H5650H5971H5414H1004H3608 19"Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land'?H346H5030H5012H559H4428H894H935H776 20"Therefore please hear now, O my lord the king. Please, let my petition be accepted before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there."H8085H113H4428H8467H5307H6440H7725H1004H3083H5608H4191 21Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.H6667H4428H6680H6485H3414H2691H4307H5414H3117H3603H3899H644H2351H3899H5892H8552H3414H3427H2691H4307
