Jeremiah 37
Today's New International Version Help
37Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim.H4428H6667H1121H2977H4427H3659H1121H3079H5019H4428H894H4427H776H3063
2Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.H5650H5971H776H8085H1697H3068H1696H3027H5030H3414
3King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehukal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us."H6667H4428H7971H3081H1121H8018H6846H1121H4641H3548H5030H3414H559H6419H3068H430
4Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.H3414H935H3318H8432H5971H5414H1004H3628
5Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.H6547H2428H3318H4714H3778H6696H3389H8085H8088H5927H3389
6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:H1697H3068H5030H3414H559
7"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.H559H3068H430H3478H559H4428H3063H7971H1875H6547H2428H3318H5833H7725H4714H776
8Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.'H3778H7725H3898H5892H3920H8313H784
9"This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Babylonians will surely leave us.' They will not!H559H3068H5377H5315H559H3778H1980H3212H3212
10Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down."H5221H2428H3778H3898H7604H1856H582H6965H376H168H8313H5892H784
11After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,H2428H3778H5927H3389H6440H6547H2428
12Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there.H3414H3318H3389H3212H776H1144H2505H8432H5971
13But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, "You are deserting to the Babylonians!"H8179H1144H1167H6488H8034H3376H1121H8018H1121H2608H8610H3414H5030H559H5307H3778
14"That's not true!" Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Babylonians." But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.H559H3414H8267H5307H3778H8085H3376H8610H3414H935H8269
15They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.H8269H7107H3414H5221H5414H612H1004H3083H5608H6213H3608
16Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time.H3414H935H1004H953H2588H3414H3427H7227H3117
17Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, "Is there any word from the LORD?" "Yes," Jeremiah replied, "you will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon."H6667H4428H7971H3947H4428H7592H5643H1004H559H1697H3068H3414H559H3426H559H5414H3027H4428H894
18Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you or your attendants or this people, that you have put me in prison?H3414H559H4428H6667H2398H5650H5971H5414H1004H3608
19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land'?H346H5030H5012H559H4428H894H935H776
20But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there."H8085H113H4428H8467H5307H6440H7725H1004H3083H5608H4191
21King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given a loaf of bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.H6667H4428H6680H6485H3414H2691H4307H5414H3117H3603H3899H644H2351H3899H5892H8552H3414H3427H2691H4307
