Jeremiah Warns against Trust in Pharaoh

37Now Zedekiah the son of Josiah whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah, reigned as king in place of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.H4428H6667H1121H2977H4427H3659H1121H3079H5019H4428H894H4427H776H3063 2But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD which He spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.H5650H5971H776H8085H1697H3068H1696H3027H5030H3414 3Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, " Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf. "H6667H4428H7971H3081H1121H8018H6846H1121H4641H3548H5030H3414H559H6419H3068H430 4Now Jeremiah was [still] coming in and going out among the people, for they had not [yet] put him in the prison.H3414H935H3318H8432H5971H5414H1004H3628 5Meanwhile, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who had been besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they lifted the [siege] from Jerusalem.H6547H2428H3318H4714H3778H6696H3389H8085H8088H5927H3389 6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, saying,H1697H3068H5030H3414H559 7"Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Thus you are to say to the king of Judah, who sent you to Me to inquire of Me:" Behold, Pharaoh's army which has come out for your assistance is going to return to its own land of Egypt.H559H3068H430H3478H559H4428H3063H7971H1875H6547H2428H3318H5833H7725H4714H776 8"The Chaldeans will also return and fight against this city, and they will capture it and burn it with fire." 'H3778H7725H3898H5892H3920H8313H784 9"Thus says the LORD, 'Do not deceive yourselves, saying," The Chaldeans will surely go away from us, "for they will not go.H559H3068H5377H5315H559H3778H1980H3212H3212 10'For even if you had defeated the entire army of Chaldeans who were fighting against you, and there were [only] wounded men left among them, each man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.' "H5221H2428H3778H3898H7604H1856H582H6965H376H168H8313H5892H784

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11Now it happened, when the army of the Chaldeans had lifted [the siege] from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,H2428H3778H5927H3389H6440H6547H2428 12that Jeremiah went out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin in order to take possession of [some] property there among the people.H3414H3318H3389H3212H776H1144H2505H8432H5971 13While he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah was there; and he arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are going over to the Chaldeans!"H8179H1144H1167H6488H8034H3376H1121H8018H1121H2608H8610H3414H5030H559H5307H3778 14But Jeremiah said, "A lie! I am not going over to the Chaldeans"; yet he would not listen to him. So Irijah arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.H559H3414H8267H5307H3778H8085H3376H8610H3414H935H8269 15Then the officials were angry at Jeremiah and beat him, and they put him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they had made into the prison.H8269H7107H3414H5221H5414H612H1004H3083H5608H6213H3608 16For Jeremiah had come into the dungeon, that is, the vaulted cell; and Jeremiah stayed there many days.H3414H935H1004H953H2588H3414H3427H7227H3117 17Now King Zedekiah sent and took him [out;] and in his palace the king secretly asked him and said, "Is there a word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is!" Then he said, "You will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon!"H6667H4428H7971H3947H4428H7592H5643H1004H559H1697H3068H3414H559H3426H559H5414H3027H4428H894 18Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "[In] what [way] have I sinned against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?H3414H559H4428H6667H2398H5650H5971H5414H1004H3608 19"Where then are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land'?H346H5030H5012H559H4428H894H935H776 20"But now, please listen, O my lord the king; please let my petition come before you, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, that I may not die there."H8085H113H4428H8467H5307H6440H7725H1004H3083H5608H4191 21Then King Zedekiah gave commandment, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guardhouse and gave him a loaf of bread daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guardhouse.H6667H4428H6680H6485H3414H2691H4307H5414H3117H3603H3899H644H2351H3899H5892H8552H3414H3427H2691H4307
