Jerusalem’s Last Days

37Zedekiah son of Josiah reigned as king in the land of Judah in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made him king.H4428H6667H1121H2977H4427H3659H1121H3079H5019H4428H894H4427H776H3063
2He and his officers and the people of the land did not obey the words of the LORD that He spoke through Jeremiah the prophet.H5650H5971H776H8085H1697H3068H1696H3027H5030H3414
3Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, the priest, to Jeremiah the prophet, requesting, "Please pray to the LORD our God for us!"H6667H4428H7971H3081H1121H8018H6846H1121H4641H3548H5030H3414H559H6419H3068H430
4Jeremiah was going about his daily tasks among the people, for they had not [yet] put him into the prison.H3414H935H3318H8432H5971H5414H1004H3628
5Pharaoh's army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans, who were besieging Jerusalem, heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem.H6547H2428H3318H4714H3778H6696H3389H8085H8088H5927H3389
6The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet:H1697H3068H5030H3414H559
7"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: This is what you will say to Judah's king, who is sending you to inquire of Me: Watch: Pharaoh's army, which has come out to help you, is going to return to its own land of Egypt.H559H3068H430H3478H559H4428H3063H7971H1875H6547H2428H3318H5833H7725H4714H776
8The Chaldeans will then return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.H3778H7725H3898H5892H3920H8313H784
9This is what the LORD says: Don't deceive yourselves by saying: The Chaldeans will leave us for good, for they will not leave.H559H3068H5377H5315H559H3778H1980H3212H3212
10Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire Chaldean army that is fighting with you, and there remained among them only the badly wounded men, each in his tent, they would get up and burn this city down."H5221H2428H3778H3898H7604H1856H582H6965H376H168H8313H5892H784

Jeremiah’s Imprisonment

11When the Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,H2428H3778H5927H3389H6440H6547H2428
12Jeremiah [started to] leave Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to claim his portion there among the people.H3414H3318H3389H3212H776H1144H2505H8432H5971
13But when he was at the Benjamin Gate, an officer of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he apprehended Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans."H8179H1144H1167H6488H8034H3376H1121H8018H1121H2608H8610H3414H5030H559H5307H3778
14"[That's] a lie," Jeremiah replied. "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans!" Irijah would not listen to him but apprehended Jeremiah and took him to the officials.H559H3414H8267H5307H3778H8085H3376H8610H3414H935H8269
15The officials were angry at Jeremiah and beat him and placed him in jail in the house of Jonathan the scribe, for it had been made into a prison.H8269H7107H3414H5221H5414H612H1004H3083H5608H6213H3608
16So Jeremiah went into a cell in the dungeon and stayed there many days.H3414H935H1004H953H2588H3414H3427H7227H3117

Jeremiah Summoned by Zedekiah

17King Zedekiah later sent [for him] and received him, and in his house privately asked him, "Is there a word from the LORD?" "There is," Jeremiah responded, and he continued, "You will be handed over to the king of Babylon."H6667H4428H7971H3947H4428H7592H5643H1004H559H1697H3068H3414H559H3426H559H5414H3027H4428H894
18Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "How have I sinned against you or your servants or these people that you have put me in prison?H3414H559H4428H6667H2398H5650H5971H5414H1004H3608
19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, claiming, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you and this land'?H346H5030H5012H559H4428H894H935H776
20So now please listen, my lord the king. May my petition come before you. Don't send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I will die there."H8085H113H4428H8467H5307H6440H7725H1004H3083H5608H4191
21So King Zedekiah gave orders, and Jeremiah was placed in the guard's courtyard. He was given a loaf of bread each day from the baker's street until all the bread was gone from the city. So Jeremiah remained in the guard's courtyard.H6667H4428H6680H6485H3414H2691H4307H5414H3117H3603H3899H644H2351H3899H5892H8552H3414H3427H2691H4307
