Today's New International Version Help
41In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king's officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there,H7637H2320H3458H1121H5418H1121H476H2233H4410H7227H4428H6235H582H935H1436H1121H296H4709H398H3899H3162H4708
2Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.H6965H3458H1121H5418H6235H582H5221H1436H1121H296H1121H8227H2719H4191H4428H894H6485H776
3Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian soldiers who were there.H3458H5221H3064H1436H4709H3778H4672H582H4421
4The day after Gedaliah's assassination, before anyone knew about it,H8145H3117H4191H1436H376H3045
5eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense with them to the house of the LORD.H935H582H7927H7887H8111H8084H376H2206H1548H899H7167H1413H4503H3828H3027H935H1004H3068
6Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, "Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam."H3458H1121H5418H3318H4709H7125H1058H1980H1980H6298H559H935H1436H1121H296
7When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.H935H8432H5892H3458H1121H5418H7819H8432H953H582
8But ten of them said to Ishmael, "Don't kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field." So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others.H6235H582H4672H559H3458H4191H3426H4301H7704H2406H8184H8081H1706H2308H4191H8432H251
9Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as part of his defense against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.H953H3458H7993H6297H582H5221H3027H1436H609H4428H6213H6440H1201H4428H3478H3458H1121H5418H4390H2491
10Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah—the king's daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.H3458H7617H7611H5971H4709H4428H1323H5971H7604H4709H5018H7227H2876H6485H1436H1121H296H3458H1121H5418H7617H3212H5674H1121H5983
11When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,H3110H1121H7143H8269H2428H8085H7451H3458H1121H5418H6213
12they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon.H3947H582H3212H3898H3458H1121H5418H4672H7227H4325H1391
13When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad.H5971H3458H7200H3110H1121H7143H8269H2428H8055
14All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.H5971H3458H7617H4709H5437H7725H3212H3110H1121H7143
15But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.H3458H1121H5418H4422H6440H3110H8083H582H3212H1121H5983
16Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam—the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon.H3947H3110H1121H7143H8269H2428H7611H5971H7725H3458H1121H5418H4709H310H5221H1436H1121H296H1397H582H4421H802H2945H5631H7725H1391
17And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to EgyptH3212H3427H1628H3643H681H1035H3212H935H4714
18to escape the Babylonians. They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.H6440H3778H3372H3458H1121H5418H5221H1436H1121H296H4428H894H6485H776
