A Dialogue about Righteousness: The Lord Speaks

5Wander through the streets of Jerusalem. Look and investigate; search through her squares and see whether you find anyone?even one person there - doing justice and seeking truth. Then I'll forgive them.H7751H2351H3389H7200H3045H1245H7339H4672H376H3426H6213H4941H1245H530H5545
2Although they say, 'As surely as the Lord lives,' still they are swearing falsely."H559H3068H2416H7650H8267

The Prophet Speaks

3Lord, don't your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they didn't flinch. You brought them to an end, but they refused to receive discipline. They made their faces harder than stone, and they refused to repent.H3068H5869H530H5221H2342H3615H3985H3947H4148H6440H2388H5553H3985H7725
4Then I said, "These are only the poor, they're foolish, for they don't know the Lord's way, the requirement of their God.H559H1800H2973H3045H1870H3068H4941H430

The Lord Answers

5Let me go to the leaders and speak to them. For they know the Lord's way, the requirement of their God." "But they, all together, have broken the yoke and torn off the restraints.H3212H1419H1696H3045H1870H3068H4941H430H3162H7665H5923H5423H4147
6Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will devastate them. A leopard is watching their towns, and everyone who goes out of them will be torn to pieces. For their transgressions are many, and their apostasies numerous.H738H3293H5221H2061H6160H7703H5246H8245H5892H3318H2007H2963H6588H7231H4878H6105
7Why should I forgive you?Your sons have forsaken me, and you have sworn by those who aren't gods. When I gave them enough food to satisfy them, they committed adultery and marched to the prostitute's house.H335H5545H2063H1121H5800H7650H3808H430H7650H5003H1413H2181H1004
8They were well-fed, lusty stallions, each one neighing after his neighbor's wife.H2109H5483H7904H376H6670H7453H802
9"Should I not punish them for these things? asks the Lord, "And on a nation like this, should I not seek retribution?H6485H5002H3068H5315H5358H1471

The People Reject God’s Warning

10"Go through her rows of vines and destroy them, but don't completely destroy them. Strip away her branches, because they aren't the Lord's.H5927H8284H7843H6213H3617H5493H5189H3068
11For both the house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me," declares the Lord.H1004H3478H1004H3063H898H898H5002H3068
12They have lied about the Lord by saying, 'He wouldn't do that! Disaster won't come on us. We won't see sword and famine.H3584H3068H559H7451H935H7200H2719H7458
13The prophets are nothing but wind, and the word is not in them. So may the disaster happen to them!H5030H7307H1696H6213
14Therefore, this is what the Lord God of the Heavenly Armies says: "Because you people have said this, my words in your mouth will become a fire and these people the wood. The fire will destroy them.H559H3068H430H6635H1696H1697H5414H1697H6310H784H5971H6086H398
15People of Israel, I'm now bringing a nation from far away to attack you," declares the Lord. "It is an enduring nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you don't know. And you won't understand what they say.H935H1471H4801H1004H3478H5002H3068H386H1471H5769H1471H1471H3956H3045H8085H1696
16Their quiver is like an open grave, and all of them are powerful warriors.H827H6605H6913H1368
17"They'll devour your harvest and your food. They'll devour your sons and your daughters. They'll devour your vines and your fig trees. With their swords they'll batter down your fortified cities in which you trust.H398H7105H3899H1121H1323H398H398H6629H1241H398H1612H8384H7567H4013H5892H2007H982H2719
18"Yet even in those days," declares the Lord, "I won't destroy you completely.H3117H5002H3068H6213H3617
19When the people ask, 'Why has the Lord our God done all this to us? you are to say to them, 'Just as you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.'"H559H8478H4100H6213H3068H430H559H5800H5647H5236H430H776H5647H2114H776

The Lord Warns a Stubborn People

20"Declare this to the descendants of Jacob, and proclaim it in Judah:H5046H1004H3290H8085H3063H559
21'Hear this, you foolish and stupid people: They have eyes, but don't see; they have ears, but don't hear.H8085H5530H5971H3820H5869H7200H241H8085
22'You don't fear me, do you? declares the Lord. 'You don't tremble before me, do you?I'm the one who put the sand as a boundary for the sea, a perpetual barrier that it cannot cross. Though the waves toss, they cannot prevail against it, though they roar, they cannot cross it.H3372H5002H3068H2342H6440H7760H2344H1366H3220H5769H2706H5674H1530H1607H3201H1993H5674
23But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts. They have turned aside and have gone away.H5971H5637H4784H3820H5493H3212
24They don't say to themselves, "Let's fear the Lord our God, who gives rain in its season, both the autumn and the spring rain. He sets aside for us the weeks appointed for the harvest."H559H3824H3372H3068H430H5414H1653H3138H4456H6256H8104H2708H7620H7105
25'Your iniquities have turned these things away, and your sins have held back from you what is good.H5771H5186H2403H4513H2896
26"Evil men are found among my people. They lie in wait like someone who traps birds. They set a trap, but they do so to catch people.H5971H4672H7563H7789H7918H3353H5324H4889H3920H582
27'Like a cage full of birds, so their houses are filled with treachery. This is how they have become prominent and rich,H3619H4392H5775H1004H4392H4820H1431H6238
28and have grown fat and sleek. There is no limit to their evil deeds. They don't argue the case of the orphan to secure justice. They don't defend the rights of the poor.H8080H6245H5674H1697H7451H1777H1779H3490H6743H4941H34H8199
29'Should I not punish them for this - ,' asks the Lord, 'Should I not avenge myself on a nation like this?H6485H5002H3068H5315H5358H1471
30"An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land.H8047H8186H1961H776
31"The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end -H5030H5012H8267H3548H7287H3027H5971H157H6213H319
