Washing His Disciples’ Feet

13Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come to leave this world to go to the Father. Having loved his dear companions, he continued to love them right to the end.G1161G4253G1859G3957G2424G1492G3754G846G5610G2064G2443G3327G1537G5127G2889G4314G3962G25G2398G3588G1722G2889G25G846G1519G5056 2It was suppertime. The Devil by now had Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, firmly in his grip, all set for the betrayal.G2532G1173G1096G1228G2235G906G1519G2588G2455G2469G4613G2443G3860G846 3Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God.G2424G1492G3754G3962G1325G3956G1519G846G5495G2532G3754G1831G575G2316G2532G5217G4314G2316 4So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron.G1453G1537G1173G2532G5087G2440G2532G2983G3012G1241G1438 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron.G1534G906G5204G1519G3537G2532G756G3538G3101G4228G2532G1591G3012G3739G2258G1241 6When he got to Simon Peter, Peter said, "Master, you wash my feet?"G3767G2064G4314G4613G4074G2532G1565G3004G846G2962G3538G4771G3538G3450G4228 7Jesus answered, "You don't understand now what I'm doing, but it will be clear enough to you later."G2424G611G2532G2036G846G3739G1473G4160G4771G1492G3756G737G1161G1097G3326G5023 8Peter persisted, "You're not going to wash my feet—ever!" Jesus said, "If I don't wash you, you can't be part of what I'm doing."G4074G3004G846G3538G1519G165G3364G3538G3450G4228G2424G611G846G3362G3538G4571G3362G2192G3756G3313G3326G1700 9"Master!" said Peter. "Not only my feet, then. Wash my hands! Wash my head!"G4613G4074G3004G846G2962G3361G3450G4228G3440G235G2532G5495G2532G2776 10Jesus said, "If you've had a bath in the morning, you only need your feet washed now and you're clean from head to toe. My concern, you understand, is holiness, not hygiene. So now you're clean. But not every one of you."G2424G3004G846G3068G5532G3756G2192G2228G3538G4228G235G2076G2513G3650G2532G5210G2075G2513G235G3780G3956 11(He knew who was betraying him. That's why he said, "Not every one of you.")G1063G1492G3588G3860G846G5124G1223G2036G2075G3780G3956G2513 12After he had finished washing their feet, he took his robe, put it back on, and went back to his place at the table. Then he said, "Do you understand what I have done to you?G3767G3753G3538G846G4228G2532G2983G846G2440G377G3825G2036G846G1097G5101G4160G5213 13You address me as 'Teacher' and 'Master,' and rightly so. That is what I am.G5210G5455G3165G1320G2532G2962G2532G3004G2573G1063G1510 14So if I, the Master and Teacher, washed your feet, you must now wash each other's feet.G1487G1473G3767G2962G2532G1320G3538G5216G4228G5210G2532G3784G3538G240G4228 15I've laid down a pattern for you. What I've done, you do.G1063G1325G5213G5262G2443G5210G4160G2531G2532G1473G4160G5213 16I'm only pointing out the obvious. A servant is not ranked above his master; an employee doesn't give orders to the employer.G281G281G3004G5213G1401G2076G3756G3187G846G2962G3761G652G3187G3992G846 17If you understand what I'm telling you, act like it—and live a blessed life.G1487G1492G5023G3107G2075G1437G4160G846

The One Who Ate Bread at My Table

18"I'm not including all of you in this. I know precisely whom I've selected, so as not to interfere with the fulfillment of this Scripture: The one who ate bread at my table Turned on his heel against me.G3004G3756G4012G5216G3956G1473G1492G3739G1586G235G2443G1124G4137G5176G740G3326G1700G1869G846G4418G1909G1691 19"I'm telling you all this ahead of time so that when it happens you will believe that I am who I say I am.G575G737G3004G5213G4253G1096G2443G3752G1096G4100G3754G1473G1510 20Make sure you get this right: Receiving someone I send is the same as receiving me, just as receiving me is the same as receiving the One who sent me."G281G281G3004G5213G2983G1437G5100G3992G2983G1691G1161G2983G1691G2983G3992G3165 21After he said these things, Jesus became visibly upset, and then he told them why. "One of you is going to betray me."G2424G2036G5023G2036G5015G4151G2532G3140G2532G2036G281G281G3004G5213G3754G1520G1537G5216G3860G3165 22The disciples looked around at one another, wondering who on earth he was talking about.G3767G3101G991G1519G240G639G4012G5101G3004 23One of the disciples, the one Jesus loved dearly, was reclining against him, his head on his shoulder.G1161G2258G345G1722G2424G2859G1520G846G3101G3739G2424G25 24Peter motioned to him to ask who Jesus might be talking about.G4613G4074G3767G3506G5129G4441G5101G302G1498G4012G3739G3004 25So, being the closest, he said, "Master, who?"G1565G1161G1968G1909G2424G4738G3004G846G2962G5101G2076 26Jesus said, "The one to whom I give this crust of bread after I've dipped it." Then he dipped the crust and gave it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.G2424G611G1565G2076G3739G1929G5596G1473G911G2532G1686G5596G1325G2455G2469G4613 27As soon as the bread was in his hand, Satan entered him. "What you must do," said Jesus, "do. Do it and get it over with."G2532G3326G5596G5119G4567G1525G1519G1565G3767G3004G2424G846G3739G4160G4160G5032 28No one around the supper table knew why he said this to him.G1161G3762G345G1097G4314G5101G2036G5124G846 29Some thought that since Judas was their treasurer, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the Feast, or that he should give something to the poor.G1063G5100G1380G1893G2455G2192G1101G3754G2424G3004G846G59G3739G2192G5532G1519G1859G2228G2443G1325G5100G4434 30Judas, with the piece of bread, left. It was night.G1565G3767G2983G5596G1831G2112G1831G1161G2258G3571

A New Command

31When he had left, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is seen for who he is, and God seen for who he is in him. The moment God is seen in him,G3767G3753G1831G2424G3004G3568G1392G5207G444G1392G2532G2316G1392G1722G846 32God's glory will be on display. In glorifying him, he himself is glorified—glory all around!G1487G2316G1392G1722G846G2316G1392G2532G1392G846G1722G1438G2532G1392G2117G1392G846 33"Children, I am with you for only a short time longer. You are going to look high and low for me. But just as I told the Jews, I'm telling you: 'Where I go, you are not able to come.'G5040G2089G3397G1510G3326G5216G2212G3165G2532G2531G2036G2453G3754G3699G1473G5217G5210G3756G1410G2064G2532G737G3004G5213 34"Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another.G2537G1785G1325G5213G2443G25G240G2531G25G5209G2443G5210G2532G25G240 35This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other."G1722G5129G1097G3956G1097G3754G2075G1699G3101G1437G2192G26G1722G240 36Simon Peter asked, "Master, just where are you going?" Jesus answered, "You can't now follow me where I'm going. You will follow later."G4613G4074G3004G846G2962G4226G5217G2424G611G846G3699G5217G1410G3756G190G3427G3568G1161G190G3427G5305 37"Master," said Peter, "why can't I follow now? I'll lay down my life for you!"G4074G3004G846G2962G1302G3756G1410G190G4671G737G5087G3450G5590G5228G4675 38"Really? You'll lay down your life for me? The truth is that before the rooster crows, you'll deny me three times."G2424G611G846G5087G4675G5590G5228G1700G281G281G3004G4671G220G5455G3364G5455G2193G3739G533G3165G5151
