The Arrest of Jesus

18After Jesus had said this prayer, he left with his disciples and went across Kidron Brook. There was a garden in that place, and Jesus and his disciples went in.G2424G2036G5023G1831G4862G846G3101G4008G5493G2748G3699G2258G2779G1519G3739G846G1525G2532G846G3101
2Judas, the traitor, knew where it was, because many times Jesus had met there with his disciples.G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G1492G5117G3754G2424G4178G4863G1563G3326G846G3101
3So Judas went to the garden, taking with him a group of Roman soldiers, and some Temple guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees; they were armed and carried lanterns and torches.G2455G3767G2983G4686G2532G5257G1537G749G2532G5330G2064G1563G3326G5322G2532G2985G2532G3696
4Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward and asked them, "Who is it you are looking for?"G2424G3767G1492G3956G2064G1909G846G1831G2036G846G5101G2212
5"Jesus of Nazareth," they answered. "I am he," he said. Judas, the traitor, was standing there with them.G611G846G2424G3480G2424G3004G846G1473G1510G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G2476G3326G846
6When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they moved back and fell to the ground.G5613G3767G2036G846G3754G1473G1510G565G1519G3694G2532G4098G5476
7Again Jesus asked them, "Who is it you are looking for?" "Jesus of Nazareth," they said.G3767G1905G846G3825G5101G2212G1161G2036G2424G3480
8"I have already told you that I am he," Jesus said. "If, then, you are looking for me, let these others go."G2424G611G2036G5213G3754G1473G1510G1487G3767G2212G1691G863G5128G5217
9(He said this so that what he had said might come true: "Father, I have not lost even one of those you gave me.")G2443G3056G4137G3739G2036G3754G1537G846G3739G1325G3427G3756G622G3762
10Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the High Priest's slave, cutting off his right ear. The name of the slave was Malchus.G3767G4613G4074G2192G3162G1670G846G2532G3817G749G1401G2532G609G846G1188G5621G1161G1401G3686G2258G3124
11Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back in its place! Do you think that I will not drink the cup of suffering which my Father has given me?"G3767G2036G2424G4074G906G4675G3162G1519G2336G4221G3739G3962G1325G3427G4095G3378G4095G846

Jesus before Annas

12Then the Roman soldiers with their commanding officer and the Jewish guards arrested Jesus, tied him up,G3767G4686G2532G5506G2532G5257G2453G4815G2424G2532G1210G846
13and took him first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year.G2532G520G846G520G4314G452G4412G1063G2258G3995G2533G3739G2258G749G1565G1763
14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish authorities that it was better that one man should die for all the people.G1161G2533G2258G3588G4823G2453G3754G4851G1520G444G622G5228G2992

Peter Denies Jesus

15Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That other disciple was well known to the High Priest, so he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the High Priest's house,G1161G4613G4074G190G2424G2532G243G3101G1161G1565G3101G2258G1110G749G2532G4897G2424G1519G833G749
16while Peter stayed outside by the gate. Then the other disciple went back out, spoke to the girl at the gate, and brought Peter inside.G1161G4074G2476G4314G2374G1854G3767G1831G243G3101G3739G2258G1110G749G2532G2036G2377G2532G1521G4074
17The girl at the gate said to Peter, "Aren't you also one of the disciples of that man?" "No, I am not," answered Peter.G3767G3004G3814G2377G4074G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G5127G444G3101G1565G3004G1510G3756
18It was cold, so the servants and guards had built a charcoal fire and were standing around it, warming themselves. So Peter went over and stood with them, warming himself.G1161G1401G2532G5257G2476G4160G439G3754G2258G5592G2532G2328G1161G4074G2258G2476G3326G846G2532G2328

The High Priest Questions Jesus

19The High Priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.G749G3767G2065G2424G4012G846G3101G2532G4012G846G1322
20Jesus answered, "I have always spoken publicly to everyone; all my teaching was done in the synagogues and in the Temple, where all the people come together. I have never said anything in secret.G2424G611G846G1473G2980G3954G2889G1473G3842G1321G1722G4864G2532G1722G2411G3699G2453G3842G4905G2532G1722G2927G2980G3762
21Why, then, do you question me? Question the people who heard me. Ask them what I told them - -they know what I said."G5101G1905G3165G1905G191G5101G2980G846G2396G3778G1492G3739G1473G2036
22When Jesus said this, one of the guards there slapped him and said, "How dare you talk like that to the High Priest!"G1161G846G2036G5023G2036G1520G5257G3936G1325G4475G2424G1325G4475G2036G611G749G3779
23Jesus answered him, "If I have said anything wrong, tell everyone here what it was. But if I am right in what I have said, why do you hit me?"G2424G611G846G1487G2980G2560G3140G4012G2556G1161G1487G2573G5101G1194G3165
24Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the High Priest.G452G649G846G1210G4314G2533G749

Peter Denies Jesus Again

25Peter was still standing there keeping himself warm. So the others said to him, "Aren't you also one of the disciples of that man?" But Peter denied it. "No, I am not," he said.G1161G4613G4074G2258G2476G2532G2328G2036G3767G846G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G846G3101G1565G720G2532G2036G1510G3756
26One of the High Priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, spoke up. "Didn't I see you with him in the garden?" he asked.G1520G1537G1401G749G5607G4773G3739G5621G4074G609G3004G1492G3756G1473G1492G4571G1722G2779G3326G846
27Again Peter said "No" - -and at once a rooster crowed.G4074G3767G720G3825G2532G2112G220G5455

Jesus before Pilate

28Early in the morning Jesus was taken from Caiaphas' house to the governor's palace. The Jewish authorities did not go inside the palace, for they wanted to keep themselves ritually clean, in order to be able to eat the Passover meal.G3767G71G2424G575G2533G1519G4232G1161G2258G4405G2532G846G1525G3756G1519G4232G3363G3392G235G2443G5315G3957
29So Pilate went outside to them and asked, "What do you accuse this man of ?"G4091G3767G1831G4314G846G2532G2036G5101G2724G5342G2596G5127G444
30Their answer was, "We would not have brought him to you if he had not committed a crime."G611G2532G2036G846G1508G3778G2258G1508G2555G302G3756G3860G846G3860G4671
31Pilate said to them, "Then you yourselves take him and try him according to your own law." They replied, "We are not allowed to put anyone to death."G3767G2036G4091G846G2983G5210G846G2532G2919G846G2596G5216G3551G2453G3767G2036G846G1832G3756G1832G2254G615G3762G615
32(This happened in order to make come true what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he would die.)G2443G3056G2424G4137G3739G2036G4591G4169G2288G3195G599
33Pilate went back into the palace and called Jesus. "Are you the king of the Jews?" he asked him.G3767G4091G1525G1519G4232G3825G2532G5455G2424G2532G2036G846G1488G4771G935G2453
34Jesus answered, "Does this question come from you or have others told you about me?"G2424G611G846G3004G4771G5124G575G1438G2228G243G2036G4671G4012G1700
35Pilate replied, "Do you think I am a Jew? It was your own people and the chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done?"G4091G611G3385G1510G1473G2453G4674G1484G2532G749G3860G4571G1698G5101G4160
36Jesus said, "My kingdom does not belong to this world; if my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. No, my kingdom does not belong here!"G2424G611G1699G932G2076G3756G1537G5127G2889G1487G1699G932G2258G1537G5127G2889G302G1699G5257G75G3363G3860G3363G3860G2453G1161G3568G2076G1699G932G3756G1782
37So Pilate asked him, "Are you a king, then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me."G4091G3767G2036G846G1488G4771G935G3766G2424G611G4771G3004G3754G1473G1510G935G1519G5124G1080G1473G1080G2532G1519G5124G2064G1519G2889G2443G3140G225G3956G5607G1537G225G191G3450G5456

Jesus Is Sentenced to Death

38"And what is truth?" Pilate asked. Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them, "I cannot find any reason to condemn him.G4091G3004G846G5101G2076G225G2532G2036G5124G1831G3825G4314G2453G2532G3004G846G1473G2147G1722G846G3762G156
39But according to the custom you have, I always set free a prisoner for you during the Passover. Do you want me to set free for you the king of the Jews?"G1161G5213G2076G4914G2443G630G5213G1520G1722G3957G1014G3767G630G5213G935G2453
40They answered him with a shout, "No, not him! We want Barabbas!" (Barabbas was a bandit.)G3767G2905G3956G3825G3004G3361G5126G235G912G1161G912G2258G3027
