Seized in the Garden at Night

18Jesus, having prayed this prayer, left with his disciples and crossed over the brook Kidron at a place where there was a garden. He and his disciples entered it.G2424G2036G5023G1831G4862G846G3101G4008G5493G2748G3699G2258G2779G1519G3739G846G1525G2532G846G3101 2Judas, his betrayer, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples went there often.G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G1492G5117G3754G2424G4178G4863G1563G3326G846G3101 3So Judas led the way to the garden, and the Roman soldiers and police sent by the high priests and Pharisees followed. They arrived there with lanterns and torches and swords.G2455G3767G2983G4686G2532G5257G1537G749G2532G5330G2064G1563G3326G5322G2532G2985G2532G3696 4Jesus, knowing by now everything that was coming down on him, went out and met them. He said, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."G2424G3767G1492G3956G2064G1909G846G1831G2036G846G5101G2212 5He said, "That's me." The soldiers recoiled, totally taken aback. Judas, his betrayer, stood out like a sore thumb.G611G846G2424G3480G2424G3004G846G1473G1510G1161G2455G2532G3588G3860G846G2476G3326G846 6(SEE 18:5)G5613G3767G2036G846G3754G1473G1510G565G1519G3694G2532G4098G5476 7Jesus asked again, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."G3767G1905G846G3825G5101G2212G1161G2036G2424G3480 8"I told you," said Jesus, "that's me. I'm the one. So if it's me you're after, let these others go."G2424G611G2036G5213G3754G1473G1510G1487G3767G2212G1691G863G5128G5217 9(This validated the words in his prayer, "I didn't lose one of those you gave.")G2443G3056G4137G3739G2036G3754G1537G846G3739G1325G3427G3756G622G3762 10Just then Simon Peter, who was carrying a sword, pulled it from its sheath and struck the Chief Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. Malchus was the servant's name.G3767G4613G4074G2192G3162G1670G846G2532G3817G749G1401G2532G609G846G1188G5621G1161G1401G3686G2258G3124 11Jesus ordered Peter, "Put back your sword. Do you think for a minute I'm not going to drink this cup the Father gave me?"G3767G2036G2424G4074G906G4675G3162G1519G2336G4221G3739G3962G1325G3427G4095G3378G4095G846 12Then the Roman soldiers under their commander, joined by the Jewish police, seized Jesus and tied him up.G3767G4686G2532G5506G2532G5257G2453G4815G2424G2532G1210G846 13They took him first to Annas, father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the Chief Priest that year.G2532G520G846G520G4314G452G4412G1063G2258G3995G2533G3739G2258G749G1565G1763 14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.G1161G2533G2258G3588G4823G2453G3754G4851G1520G444G622G5228G2992 15Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That other disciple was known to the Chief Priest, and so he went in with Jesus to the Chief Priest's courtyard.G1161G4613G4074G190G2424G2532G243G3101G1161G1565G3101G2258G1110G749G2532G4897G2424G1519G833G749 16Peter had to stay outside. Then the other disciple went out, spoke to the doorkeeper, and got Peter in.G1161G4074G2476G4314G2374G1854G3767G1831G243G3101G3739G2258G1110G749G2532G2036G2377G2532G1521G4074 17The young woman who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "Aren't you one of this man's disciples?" He said, "No, I'm not."G3767G3004G3814G2377G4074G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G5127G444G3101G1565G3004G1510G3756 18The servants and police had made a fire because of the cold and were huddled there warming themselves. Peter stood with them, trying to get warm.G1161G1401G2532G5257G2476G4160G439G3754G2258G5592G2532G2328G1161G4074G2258G2476G3326G846G2532G2328

The Interrogation

19Annas interrogated Jesus regarding his disciples and his teaching.G749G3767G2065G2424G4012G846G3101G2532G4012G846G1322 20Jesus answered, "I've spoken openly in public. I've taught regularly in meeting places and the Temple, where the Jews all come together. Everything has been out in the open. I've said nothing in secret.G2424G611G846G1473G2980G3954G2889G1473G3842G1321G1722G4864G2532G1722G2411G3699G2453G3842G4905G2532G1722G2927G2980G3762 21So why are you treating me like a conspirator? Question those who have been listening to me. They know well what I have said. My teachings have all been aboveboard."G5101G1905G3165G1905G191G5101G2980G846G2396G3778G1492G3739G1473G2036 22When he said this, one of the policemen standing there slapped Jesus across the face, saying, "How dare you speak to the Chief Priest like that!"G1161G846G2036G5023G2036G1520G5257G3936G1325G4475G2424G1325G4475G2036G611G749G3779 23Jesus replied, "If I've said something wrong, prove it. But if I've spoken the plain truth, why this slapping around?"G2424G611G846G1487G2980G2560G3140G4012G2556G1161G1487G2573G5101G1194G3165 24Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to the Chief Priest Caiaphas.G452G649G846G1210G4314G2533G749 25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was back at the fire, still trying to get warm. The others there said to him, "Aren't you one of his disciples?" He denied it, "Not me."G1161G4613G4074G2258G2476G2532G2328G2036G3767G846G1488G3361G4771G2532G1537G846G3101G1565G720G2532G2036G1510G3756 26One of the Chief Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"G1520G1537G1401G749G5607G4773G3739G5621G4074G609G3004G1492G3756G1473G1492G4571G1722G2779G3326G846 27Again, Peter denied it. Just then a rooster crowed.G4074G3767G720G3825G2532G2112G220G5455

The King of the Jews

28They led Jesus then from Caiaphas to the Roman governor's palace. It was early morning. They themselves didn't enter the palace because they didn't want to be disqualified from eating the Passover.G3767G71G2424G575G2533G1519G4232G1161G2258G4405G2532G846G1525G3756G1519G4232G3363G3392G235G2443G5315G3957 29So Pilate came out to them and spoke. "What charge do you bring against this man?"G4091G3767G1831G4314G846G2532G2036G5101G2724G5342G2596G5127G444 30They said, "If he hadn't been doing something evil, do you think we'd be here bothering you?"G611G2532G2036G846G1508G3778G2258G1508G2555G302G3756G3860G846G3860G4671 31Pilate said, "You take him. Judge him by your law." The Jews said, "We're not allowed to kill anyone."G3767G2036G4091G846G2983G5210G846G2532G2919G846G2596G5216G3551G2453G3767G2036G846G1832G3756G1832G2254G615G3762G615 32(This would confirm Jesus' word indicating the way he would die.)G2443G3056G2424G4137G3739G2036G4591G4169G2288G3195G599 33Pilate went back into the palace and called for Jesus. He said, "Are you the 'King of the Jews'?"G3767G4091G1525G1519G4232G3825G2532G5455G2424G2532G2036G846G1488G4771G935G2453 34Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?"G2424G611G846G3004G4771G5124G575G1438G2228G243G2036G4671G4012G1700 35Pilate said, "Do I look like a Jew? Your people and your high priests turned you over to me. What did you do?"G4091G611G3385G1510G1473G2453G4674G1484G2532G749G3860G4571G1698G5101G4160 36"My kingdom," said Jesus, "doesn't consist of what you see around you. If it did, my followers would fight so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. But I'm not that kind of king, not the world's kind of king."G2424G611G1699G932G2076G3756G1537G5127G2889G1487G1699G932G2258G1537G5127G2889G302G1699G5257G75G3363G3860G3363G3860G2453G1161G3568G2076G1699G932G3756G1782 37Then Pilate said, "So, are you a king or not?" Jesus answered, "You tell me. Because I am King, I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice."G4091G3767G2036G846G1488G4771G935G3766G2424G611G4771G3004G3754G1473G1510G935G1519G5124G1080G1473G1080G2532G1519G5124G2064G1519G2889G2443G3140G225G3956G5607G1537G225G191G3450G5456 38Pilate said, "What is truth?" Then he went back out to the Jews and told them, "I find nothing wrong in this man.G4091G3004G846G5101G2076G225G2532G2036G5124G1831G3825G4314G2453G2532G3004G846G1473G2147G1722G846G3762G156 39It's your custom that I pardon one prisoner at Passover. Do you want me to pardon the 'King of the Jews'?"G1161G5213G2076G4914G2443G630G5213G1520G1722G3957G1014G3767G630G5213G935G2453 40They shouted back, "Not this one, but Barabbas!" Barabbas was a Jewish freedom fighter.G3767G2905G3956G3825G3004G3361G5126G235G912G1161G912G2258G3027
