Jonah 1
Today's New International Version Help
1The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:H1697H3068H3124H1121H573H559 2"Go to the great city Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me."H6965H3212H5210H1419H5892H7121H7451H5927H6440 3But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.H3124H6965H1272H8659H6440H3068H3381H3305H4672H591H935H8659H5414H7939H3381H935H8659H6440H3068 4Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.H3068H2904H1419H7307H3220H1419H5591H3220H591H2803H7665 5All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.H4419H3372H2199H376H430H2904H3627H591H3220H7043H3124H3381H3411H5600H7901H7290 6The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish."H7227H2259H7126H559H7290H6965H7121H430H430H6245H6 7Then the sailors said to each other, "Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity." They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.H559H376H7453H3212H5307H1486H3045H7945H7451H5307H1486H1486H5307H3124 8So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?"H559H5046H7451H4399H370H935H776H5971 9He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."H559H5680H3373H3068H430H8064H6213H3220H3004 10This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?" (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)H582H1419H3374H3372H559H6213H582H3045H1272H6440H3068H5046 11The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, "What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?"H559H6213H3220H8367H3220H1980H5590 12"Pick me up and throw me into the sea," he replied, "and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you."H559H5375H2904H3220H3220H8367H3045H7945H1419H5591 13Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.H582H2864H7725H3004H3201H3220H1980H5590 14Then they cried out to the LORD, "Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased."H7121H3068H559H577H3068H6H376H5315H5414H5355H1818H3068H6213H2654 15Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.H5375H3124H2904H3220H3220H5975H2197 16At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.H582H3372H3068H1419H3374H2076H2077H3068H5087H5088 17Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.H3068H4487H1419H1709H1104H3124H3124H4578H1709H7969H3117H7969H3915
