The Day the Sun Stood Still

10Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and completely destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were [living] among them.H139H4428H3389H8085H3588H3091H3920H5857H2763H6213H3405H4428H6213H5857H4428H3427H1391H7999H3478H7130
2So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly alarmed because Gibeon was a large city like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors.H3372H3966H1391H1419H5892H259H4467H5892H1419H5857H582H1368
3Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent [word] to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,H139H4428H3389H7971H1944H4428H2275H6502H4428H3412H3309H4428H3923H1688H4428H5700H559
4"Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites."H5927H5826H5221H1391H7999H3091H1121H3478
5So the five Amorite kings— the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon— joined forces, advanced with all their armies, besieged Gibeon, and fought against it.H2568H4428H567H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700H622H5927H4264H2583H1391H3898
6Then the men of Gibeon sent [word] to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Don't abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, for all the Amorite kings living in the hill country have joined forces against us."H582H1391H7971H3091H4264H1537H559H7503H3027H5650H5927H4120H3467H5826H4428H567H3427H2022H6908
7So Joshua and his whole military force, including all the fighting men, came from Gilgal.H3091H5927H1537H5971H4421H1368H2428
8The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to stand against you."H3068H559H3091H3372H5414H3027H376H5975H6440
9So Joshua caught them by surprise, after marching all night from Gilgal.H3091H935H6597H5927H1537H3915
10The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel. He defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them through the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.H3068H2000H6440H3478H5221H1419H4347H1391H7291H1870H4608H1032H5221H5825H4719
11As they fled before Israel, the LORD threw large hailstones on them from the sky along the descent of Beth-horon all the way to Azekah, and they died. More of them died from the hail than the Israelites killed with the sword.H5127H6440H3478H4174H1032H3068H7993H1419H68H8064H5825H4191H7227H4191H1259H68H834H1121H3478H2026H2719
12On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the valley of Aijalon."H1696H3091H3068H3117H3068H5414H567H6440H1121H3478H559H5869H3478H8121H1826H1391H3394H6010H357
13And the sun stood still and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on its enemies. Isn't this written in the Book of Jashar? So the sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed its setting almost a full day.H8121H1826H3394H5975H1471H5358H341H1931H3789H5612H3477H8121H5975H2677H8064H213H935H8549H3117
14There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.H3117H6440H310H3068H8085H6963H376H3068H3898H3478
15Then Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

Execution of the Five Kings

16Now the five [defeated] kings had fled and hidden themselves in the cave at Makkedah.H2568H4428H5127H2244H4631H4719
17It was reported to Joshua: "The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah."H5046H3091H559H2568H4428H4672H2244H4631H4719
18Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and station men by it to guard the kings.H3091H559H1556H1419H68H6310H4631H6485H582H8104
19But as for the rest of you, don't stay there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Don't let them enter their cities, for the LORD your God has handed them over to you."H5975H7291H310H341H2179H5414H935H5892H3068H430H5414H3027
20So Joshua and the Israelites finished inflicting a terrible slaughter on them until they were destroyed, although a few survivors ran away to the fortified cities.H3091H1121H3478H3615H5221H3966H1419H4347H8552H8300H8277H935H4013H5892
21The people returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. No one could say a thing against the Israelites.H5971H7725H4264H3091H4719H7965H2782H3956H376H1121H3478
22Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings to me out of there."H559H3091H6605H6310H4631H3318H2568H4428H4631
23That is what they did. They brought the five kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon to Joshua out of the cave.H6213H3318H2568H4428H4631H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700
24When they had brought the kings to him, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the military commanders who had accompanied him, "Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings." So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.H3318H4428H3091H3091H7121H376H3478H559H7101H582H4421H1980H7126H7760H7272H6677H4428H7126H7760H7272H6677
25Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or discouraged. Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight."H3091H559H3372H2865H2388H553H3068H6213H341H3898
26After this, Joshua struck them down and executed them. He hung their bodies on five trees and they were there until evening.H310H3091H5221H4191H8518H2568H6086H8518H6086H6153
27At sunset Joshua commanded that they be taken down from the treesand thrown into the cave where they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.H6256H935H8121H3091H6680H3381H6086H7993H4631H2244H7760H1419H68H4631H6310H6106H3117

Conquest of Southern Cities

28On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and struck it down with the sword, including its king. He completely destroyed it and everyone in it, leaving no survivors. So he treated the king of Makkedah as he had the king of Jericho.H3117H3091H3920H4719H5221H6310H2719H4428H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H4719H6213H4428H3405
29Joshua and all Israel with him crossed from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.H3091H5674H4719H3478H3841H3898H3841
30The LORD also handed it and its king over to Israel. He struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword, and left no survivors in it. He treated Libnah's king as he had the king of Jericho.H3068H5414H4428H3027H3478H5221H6310H2719H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H6213H4428H3405
31From Libnah, Joshua and all Israel with him crossed to Lachish. They laid siege to it and attacked it.H3091H5674H3841H3478H3923H2583H3898
32The LORD handed Lachish over to Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.H3068H5414H3923H3027H3478H3920H8145H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H6213H3841
33At that time Horam king of Gezer went to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors in it.H2036H4428H1507H5927H5826H3923H3091H5221H5971H7604H8300
34Then Joshua crossed from Lachish to Eglon and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and attacked it.H3923H3091H5674H5700H3478H2583H3898
35On that day they captured it and struck it down, putting everyone in it to the sword. He completely destroyed it that day, just as he had done to Lachish.H3920H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H2763H3117H6213H3923
36Next, Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it.H3091H5927H5700H3478H2275H3898
37They captured it and struck down its king, all its villages, and everyone in it with the sword. Just as he had done at Eglon, he left no survivors. He completely destroyed Hebron and everyone in it.H3920H5221H6310H2719H4428H5892H5315H7604H8300H6213H5700H2763H5315
38Finally, Joshua turned toward Debir and attacked it. And all Israel was with him.H3091H7725H3478H1688H3898
39He captured it— its king and all its villages. They struck them down with the sword and completely destroyed everyone in it, leaving no survivors. He treated Debir and its king as he had treated Hebron and as he had treated Libnah and its king.H3920H4428H5892H5221H6310H2719H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H2275H6213H1688H4428H6213H3841H4428
40So Joshua conquered the whole region— the hill country, the Negev, the Judean foothills, and the slopes— with all their kings, leaving no survivors. He completely destroyed every living being, as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.H3091H5221H776H2022H5045H8219H794H4428H7604H8300H2763H5397H3068H430H3478H6680
41Joshua conquered everyone from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen as far as Gibeon.H3091H5221H6947H5804H776H1657H1391
42Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.H4428H776H3091H3920H259H6471H3068H430H3478H3898H3478
43Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537
