The Sun Stands Still

10As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,H139H4428H3389H8085H3588H3091H3920H5857H2763H6213H3405H4428H6213H5857H4428H3427H1391H7999H3478H7130 2he feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors.H3372H3966H1391H1419H5892H259H4467H5892H1419H5857H582H1368 3So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,H139H4428H3389H7971H1944H4428H2275H6502H4428H3412H3309H4428H3923H1688H4428H5700H559 4"Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For it has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel."H5927H5826H5221H1391H7999H3091H1121H3478 5Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.H2568H4428H567H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700H622H5927H4264H2583H1391H3898 6And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us."H582H1391H7971H3091H4264H1537H559H7503H3027H5650H5927H4120H3467H5826H4428H567H3427H2022H6908 7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.H3091H5927H1537H5971H4421H1368H2428 8And the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you."H3068H559H3091H3372H5414H3027H376H5975H6440 9So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal.H3091H935H6597H5927H1537H3915 10And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.H3068H2000H6440H3478H5221H1419H4347H1391H7291H1870H4608H1032H5221H5825H4719 11And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.H5127H6440H3478H4174H1032H3068H7993H1419H68H8064H5825H4191H7227H4191H1259H68H834H1121H3478H2026H2719 12At that time Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon."H1696H3091H3068H3117H3068H5414H567H6440H1121H3478H559H5869H3478H8121H1826H1391H3394H6010H357 13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.H8121H1826H3394H5975H1471H5358H341H1931H3789H5612H3477H8121H5975H2677H8064H213H935H8549H3117 14There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.H3117H6440H310H3068H8085H6963H376H3068H3898H3478 15So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537

Five Amorite Kings Executed

16These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.H2568H4428H5127H2244H4631H4719 17And it was told to Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."H5046H3091H559H2568H4428H4672H2244H4631H4719 18And Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them,H3091H559H1556H1419H68H6310H4631H6485H582H8104 19but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand."H5975H7291H310H341H2179H5414H935H5892H3068H430H5414H3027 20When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,H3091H1121H3478H3615H5221H3966H1419H4347H8552H8300H8277H935H4013H5892 21then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.H5971H7725H4264H3091H4719H7965H2782H3956H376H1121H3478 22Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave."H559H3091H6605H6310H4631H3318H2568H4428H4631 23And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.H6213H3318H2568H4428H4631H4428H3389H4428H2275H4428H3412H4428H3923H4428H5700 24And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, "Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings." Then they came near and put their feet on their necks.H3318H4428H3091H3091H7121H376H3478H559H7101H582H4421H1980H7126H7760H7272H6677H4428H7126H7760H7272H6677 25And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. For thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight."H3091H559H3372H2865H2388H553H3068H6213H341H3898 26And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening.H310H3091H5221H4191H8518H2568H6086H8518H6086H6153 27But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.H6256H935H8121H3091H6680H3381H6086H7993H4631H2244H7760H1419H68H4631H6310H6106H3117 28As for Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah just as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3117H3091H3920H4719H5221H6310H2719H4428H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H4719H6213H4428H3405

Conquest of Southern Canaan

29Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.H3091H5674H4719H3478H3841H3898H3841 30And the LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.H3068H5414H4428H3027H3478H5221H6310H2719H5315H7604H8300H6213H4428H6213H4428H3405 31Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it.H3091H5674H3841H3478H3923H2583H3898 32And the LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.H3068H5414H3923H3027H3478H3920H8145H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H6213H3841 33Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.H2036H4428H1507H5927H5826H3923H3091H5221H5971H7604H8300 34Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it.H3923H3091H5674H5700H3478H2583H3898 35And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.H3920H3117H5221H6310H2719H5315H2763H3117H6213H3923 36Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron. And they fought against itH3091H5927H5700H3478H2275H3898 37and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.H3920H5221H6310H2719H4428H5892H5315H7604H8300H6213H5700H2763H5315 38Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to Debir and fought against itH3091H7725H3478H1688H3898 39and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.H3920H4428H5892H5221H6310H2719H2763H5315H7604H8300H6213H2275H6213H1688H4428H6213H3841H4428 40So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the LORD God of Israel commanded.H3091H5221H776H2022H5045H8219H794H4428H7604H8300H2763H5397H3068H430H3478H6680 41And Joshua struck them from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.H3091H5221H6947H5804H776H1657H1391 42And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.H4428H776H3091H3920H259H6471H3068H430H3478H3898H3478 43Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.H3091H7725H3478H4264H1537
