The Other Half-Tribe of Manasseh (West)

17There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph: namely for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war; therefore he was given Gilead and Bashan.H1486H4294H4519H1060H3130H4353H1060H4519H1H1568H376H4421H1568H1316 2And there was a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families: for the children of Abiezer, the children of Helek, the children of Asriel, the children of Shechem, the children of Hepher, and the children of Shemida; these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph according to their families.H3498H1121H4519H4940H1121H44H1121H2507H1121H844H1121H7928H1121H2660H1121H8061H2145H1121H4519H1121H3130H4940 3But Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.H6765H1121H2660H1121H1568H1121H4353H1121H4519H1121H1323H8034H1323H4244H5270H2295H4435H8656 4And they came near before Eleazar the priest, before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the rulers, saying, "The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers." Therefore, according to the commandment of the LORD, he gave them an inheritance among their father's brothers.H7126H6440H499H3548H6440H3091H1121H5126H6440H5387H559H3068H6680H4872H5414H5159H8432H251H6310H3068H5414H5159H8432H251H1 5Ten shares fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of the Jordan,H5307H6235H2256H4519H776H1568H1316H5676H3383 6because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.H1323H4519H5157H5159H8432H1121H3498H4519H1121H776H1568 7And the territory of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, that lies east of Shechem; and the border went along south to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.H1366H4519H836H4366H6440H7927H1366H1980H3225H3427H5887 8Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim.H4519H776H8599H8599H1366H4519H1121H669 9And the border descended to the Brook Kanah, southward to the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh was on the north side of the brook; and it ended at the sea.H1366H3381H5158H7071H5045H5158H5892H669H8432H5892H4519H1366H4519H6828H5158H8444H3220 10Southward it was Ephraim's, northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea was its border. Manasseh's territory was adjoining Asher on the north and Issachar on the east.H5045H669H6828H4519H3220H1366H6293H836H6828H3485H4217 11And in Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth Shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns—three hilly regions.H4519H3485H836H1052H1323H2991H1323H3427H1756H1323H3427H5874H1323H3427H8590H1323H3427H4023H1323H7969H5316 12Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.H1121H4519H3201H3423H5892H3669H2974H3427H776 13And it happened, when the children of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.H1121H3478H2388H5414H3669H4522H3423H3423

More Land for Ephraim and Manasseh

14Then the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us only one lot and one share to inherit, since we are a great people, inasmuch as the LORD has blessed us until now?"H1121H3130H1696H3091H559H5414H259H1486H259H2256H5159H7227H5971H5704H3068H1288H3541 15So Joshua answered them, "If you are a great people, then go up to the forest country and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the giants, since the mountains of Ephraim are too confined for you."H3091H559H7227H5971H5927H3293H1254H776H6522H7497H2022H669H213 16But the children of Joseph said, "The mountain country is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are of Beth Shean and its towns and those who are of the Valley of Jezreel."H1121H3130H559H2022H4672H3669H3427H776H6010H7393H1270H1052H1323H6010H3157 17And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—saying, "You are a great people and have great power; you shall not have only one lot,H3091H559H1004H3130H669H4519H559H7227H5971H1419H3581H259H1486 18"but the mountain country shall be yours. Although it is wooded, you shall cut it down, and its farthest extent shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots and are strong."H2022H3293H1254H8444H3423H3669H1270H7393H2389
