The Gibeonite Deception

9Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things—those in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)—H4428H5676H3383H2022H8219H2348H1419H3220H4136H3844H2850H567H3669H6522H2340H2983H8085 2they came together to make war against Joshua and Israel.H6908H3162H3898H3091H3478H259H6310 3However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,H3427H1391H8085H3091H6213H3405H5857 4they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.H6213H6195H3212H6737H3947H1087H8242H2543H3196H4997H1087H1234H6887 5The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.H1087H5275H2921H7272H1087H8008H3899H6718H3001H5350 6Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us."H3212H3091H4264H1537H559H376H3478H935H7350H776H3772H1285 7The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us. How then can we make a treaty with you?"H376H3478H559H2340H194H3427H7130H3772H1285 8"We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?"H559H3091H5650H3091H559H370H935 9They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt,H559H3966H7350H776H5650H935H8034H3068H430H8085H8089H6213H4714 10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan—Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.H6213H8147H4428H567H5676H3383H5511H4428H2809H5747H4428H1316H6252 11And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us." 'H2205H3427H776H559H559H3947H6720H3027H1870H3212H7125H559H5650H3772H1285 12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is.H3899H2525H6679H1004H3117H3318H3212H3001H5350 13And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey."H4997H3196H4390H2319H1234H8008H5275H1086H3966H7230H1870 14The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.H582H3947H6718H7592H6310H3068 15Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.H3091H6213H7965H3772H1285H2421H5387H5712H7650 16Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them.H7097H7969H3117H310H3772H1285H8085H7138H3427H7130 17So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.H1121H3478H5265H935H5892H7992H3117H5892H1391H3716H881H7157 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders,H1121H3478H5221H5387H5712H7650H3068H430H3478H5712H3885H5387 19but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now.H5387H559H5712H7650H3068H430H3478H3201H5060 20This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them."H6213H2421H7110H7621H7650 21They continued, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community." So the leaders' promise to them was kept.H5387H559H2421H2404H6086H7579H4325H5712H5387H1696 22Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, 'We live a long way from you,' while actually you live near us?H3091H7121H1696H559H7411H559H3966H7350H3427H7130 23You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."H779H3772H5650H2404H6086H7579H4325H1004H430 24They answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this.H6030H3091H559H5046H5046H5650H3068H430H6680H5650H4872H5414H776H8045H3427H776H6440H3966H3372H5315H6440H6213H1697 25We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you."H2009H3027H5869H2896H3477H6213H6213 26So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them.H6213H5337H3027H1121H3478H2026 27That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day.H3091H5414H3117H2404H6086H7579H4325H5712H4196H3068H3117H4725H977
