Jephthah the Ninth Judge

11Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior, but he was the son of a harlot. And Gilead was the father of Jephthah.H3316H1569H1368H2428H1121H802H2181H1568H3205H3316 2And Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, "You shall not have an inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman."H1568H802H3205H1121H802H1121H1431H1644H3316H559H5157H1H1004H1121H312H802 3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob; and worthless fellows gathered themselves about Jephthah, and they went out with him.H3316H1272H6440H251H3427H776H2897H3950H7386H582H3316H3318 4And it came about after a while that the sons of Ammon fought against Israel.H3117H1121H5983H3898H3478 5And it happened when the sons of Ammon fought against Israel that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob;H1121H5983H3898H3478H2205H1568H3212H3947H3316H776H2897 6and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our chief that we may fight against the sons of Ammon."H559H3316H3212H7101H3898H1121H5983 7Then Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Did you not hate me and drive me from my father's house? So why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?"H3316H559H2205H1568H8130H1644H1H1004H935H6887 8And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "For this reason we have now returned to you, that you may go with us and fight with the sons of Ammon and become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."H2205H1568H559H3316H7725H1980H3898H1121H5983H7218H3427H1568 9So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you take me back to fight against the sons of Ammon and the LORD gives them up to me, will I become your head?"H3316H559H2205H1568H7725H3898H1121H5983H3068H5414H6440H7218 10And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "The LORD is witness between us; surely we will do as you have said."H2205H1568H559H3316H3068H8085H6213H1697 11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at Mizpah.H3316H3212H2205H1568H5971H7760H7218H7101H3316H1696H1697H6440H3068H4709 12Now Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, "What is between you and me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"H3316H7971H4397H4428H1121H5983H559H935H3898H776 13And the king of the sons of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel took away my land when they came up from Egypt, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok and the Jordan; therefore, return them peaceably now."H4428H1121H5983H559H4397H3316H3478H3947H776H5927H4714H769H2999H3383H7725H7965 14But Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the sons of Ammon,H3316H7971H4397H3254H4428H1121H5983 15and they said to him, "Thus says Jephthah, 'Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the sons of Ammon.H559H559H3316H3478H3947H776H4124H776H1121H5983 16'For when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh,H3478H5927H4714H3212H4057H5488H3220H935H6946 17then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us pass through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.H3478H7971H4397H4428H123H559H5674H776H4428H123H8085H7971H4428H4124H14H3478H3427H6946 18'Then they went through the wilderness and around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they camped beyond the Arnon; but they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon [was] the border of Moab.H3212H4057H5437H776H123H776H4124H935H4217H8121H776H4124H2583H5676H769H935H1366H4124H769H1366H4124 19'And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, "Please let us pass through your land to our place."H3478H7971H4397H5511H4428H567H4428H2809H3478H559H5674H776H5704H4725 20'But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people and camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.H5511H539H3478H5674H1366H5511H622H5971H622H2583H3096H3898H3478 21'And the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.H3068H430H3478H5414H5511H5971H3027H3478H5221H3478H3423H776H567H3427H776 22'So they possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and from the wilderness as far as the Jordan.H3423H1366H567H769H2999H4057H3383 23'Since now the LORD, the God of Israel, drove out the Amorites from before His people Israel, are you then to possess it?H3068H430H3478H3423H567H6440H5971H3478H3423 24'Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it.H3423H3645H430H3423H3068H430H3423H6440H3423 25'And now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive with Israel, or did he ever fight against them?H2896H1111H1121H6834H4428H4124H7378H7378H3478H3898H3898 26'While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?H3478H3427H2809H1323H6177H1323H5892H3027H769H7969H3967H8141H5337H6256 27'I therefore have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me; may the LORD, the Judge, judge today between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.' "H2398H6213H853H7451H3898H3068H8199H8199H3117H1121H3478H1121H5983 28But the king of the sons of Ammon disregarded the message which Jephthah sent him.H4428H1121H5983H8085H1697H3316H7971

Jephthah’s Tragic Vow

29Now the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, so that he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon.H7307H3068H3316H5674H1568H4519H5674H4708H1568H4708H1568H5674H1121H5983 30And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, "If Thou wilt indeed give the sons of Ammon into my hand,H3316H5087H5088H3068H559H5414H5414H1121H5983H3027 31then it shall be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the Lord's, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering. "H3318H3318H1817H1004H7125H7725H7965H1121H5983H3068H5927H5930 32So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD gave them into his hand.H3316H5674H1121H5983H3898H3068H5414H3027 33And he struck them with a very great slaughter from Aroer to the entrance of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.H5221H6177H935H4511H6242H5892H58H3754H64H3966H1419H4347H1121H5983H3665H6440H1121H3478 34When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him with tambourines and with dancing. Now she was his one [and] only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.H3316H935H4709H1004H1323H3318H7125H8596H4246H3173H1121H176H1323 35And it came about when he saw her, that he tore his clothes and said, "Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have given my word to the LORD, and I cannot take [it] back."H7200H7167H899H559H162H1323H3766H3766H3766H5916H6475H6310H3068H3201H7725 36So she said to him, "My father, you have given your word to the LORD; do to me as you have said, since the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the sons of Ammon."H559H1H6475H6310H3068H6213H834H3318H6310H310H3068H6213H5360H341H1121H5983 37And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go to the mountains and weep because of my virginity, I and my companions."H559H1H1697H6213H7503H8147H2320H3212H3381H2022H1058H1331H7464H7474 38Then he said, "Go." So he sent her away for two months; and she left with her companions, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity.H559H3212H7971H8147H2320H3212H7464H1058H1331H2022 39And it came about at the end of two months that she returned to her father, who did to her according to the vow which he had made; and she had no relations with a man. Thus it became a custom in Israel,H7093H8147H2320H7725H1H6213H5088H5087H3045H376H2706H3478 40that the daughters of Israel went yearly to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.H1323H3478H3212H3117H3117H8567H1323H3316H1569H702H3117H8141
