11Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute.H3316H1569H1368H2428H1121H802H2181H1568H3205H3316 2Gilead's wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. "You are not going to get any inheritance in our family," they said, "because you are the son of another woman."H1568H802H3205H1121H802H1121H1431H1644H3316H559H5157H1H1004H1121H312H802 3So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him.H3316H1272H6440H251H3427H776H2897H3950H7386H582H3316H3318 4Some time later, when the Ammonites made war on Israel,H3117H1121H5983H3898H3478 5the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.H1121H5983H3898H3478H2205H1568H3212H3947H3316H776H2897 6"Come," they said, "be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites."H559H3316H3212H7101H3898H1121H5983 7Jephthah said to them, "Didn't you hate me and drive me from my father's house? Why do you come to me now, when you're in trouble?"H3316H559H2205H1568H8130H1644H1H1004H935H6887 8The elders of Gilead said to him, "Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be our head over all who live in Gilead."H2205H1568H559H3316H7725H1980H3898H1121H5983H7218H3427H1568 9Jephthah answered, "Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me—will I really be your head?"H3316H559H2205H1568H7725H3898H1121H5983H3068H5414H6440H7218 10The elders of Gilead replied, "The LORD is our witness; we will certainly do as you say."H2205H1568H559H3316H3068H8085H6213H1697 11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.H3316H3212H2205H1568H5971H7760H7218H7101H3316H1696H1697H6440H3068H4709 12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: "What do you have against us that you have attacked our country?"H3316H7971H4397H4428H1121H5983H559H935H3898H776 13The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah's messengers, "When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably."H4428H1121H5983H559H4397H3316H3478H3947H776H5927H4714H769H2999H3383H7725H7965 14Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king,H3316H7971H4397H3254H4428H1121H5983 15saying: "This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.H559H559H3316H3478H3947H776H4124H776H1121H5983 16But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the desert to the Red Sea and on to Kadesh.H3478H5927H4714H3212H4057H5488H3220H935H6946 17Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Give us permission to go through your country,' but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab, and he refused. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.H3478H7971H4397H4428H123H559H5674H776H4428H123H8085H7971H4428H4124H14H3478H3427H6946 18"Next they traveled through the desert, skirted the lands of Edom and Moab, passed along the eastern side of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon. They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.H3212H4057H5437H776H123H776H4124H935H4217H8121H776H4124H2583H5676H769H935H1366H4124H769H1366H4124 19"Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, 'Let us pass through your country to our own place.'H3478H7971H4397H5511H4428H567H4428H2809H3478H559H5674H776H5704H4725 20Sihon, however, did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. He mustered all his men and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.H5511H539H3478H5674H1366H5511H622H5971H622H2583H3096H3898H3478 21"Then the LORD, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his men into Israel's hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country,H3068H430H3478H5414H5511H5971H3027H3478H5221H3478H3423H776H567H3427H776 22capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.H3423H1366H567H769H2999H4057H3383 23"Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over?H3068H430H3478H3423H567H6440H5971H3478H3423 24Will you not take what your god Chemosh gives you? Likewise, whatever the LORD our God has given us, we will possess.H3423H3645H430H3423H3068H430H3423H6440H3423 25Are you better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?H2896H1111H1121H6834H4428H4124H7378H7378H3478H3898H3898 26For three hundred years Israel occupied Heshbon, Aroer, the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn't you retake them during that time?H3478H3427H2809H1323H6177H1323H5892H3027H769H7969H3967H8141H5337H6256 27I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the LORD, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites."H2398H6213H853H7451H3898H3068H8199H8199H3117H1121H3478H1121H5983 28The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.H4428H1121H5983H8085H1697H3316H7971 29Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.H7307H3068H3316H5674H1568H4519H5674H4708H1568H4708H1568H5674H1121H5983 30And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD: "If you give the Ammonites into my hands,H3316H5087H5088H3068H559H5414H5414H1121H5983H3027 31whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD'S, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."H3318H3318H1817H1004H7125H7725H7965H1121H5983H3068H5927H5930 32Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into his hands.H3316H5674H1121H5983H3898H3068H5414H3027 33He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.H5221H6177H935H4511H6242H5892H58H3754H64H3966H1419H4347H1121H5983H3665H6440H1121H3478 34When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter.H3316H935H4709H1004H1323H3318H7125H8596H4246H3173H1121H176H1323 35When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, "Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the LORD that I cannot break."H7200H7167H899H559H162H1323H3766H3766H3766H5916H6475H6310H3068H3201H7725 36"My father," she replied, "you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me just as you promised, now that the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.H559H1H6475H6310H3068H6213H834H3318H6310H310H3068H6213H5360H341H1121H5983 37But grant me this one request," she said. "Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry."H559H1H1697H6213H7503H8147H2320H3212H3381H2022H1058H1331H7464H7474 38"You may go," he said. And he let her go for two months. She and the girls went into the hills and wept because she would never marry.H559H3212H7971H8147H2320H3212H7464H1058H1331H2022 39After the two months, she returned to her father and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin. From this comes the Israelite customH7093H8147H2320H7725H1H6213H5088H5087H3045H376H2706H3478 40that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.H1323H3478H3212H3117H3117H8567H1323H3316H1569H702H3117H8141
