Jephthah’s Conflict with Ephraim

12Then the men of Ephraim gathered together, crossed over toward Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you with fire!"H376H669H6817H5674H6828H559H3316H5674H3898H1121H5983H7121H3212H8313H1004H784 2And Jephthah said to them, "My people and I were in a great struggle with the people of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands.H3316H559H5971H1961H3966H376H7379H1121H5983H2199H3467H3027 3"So when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the people of Ammon; and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?"H7200H3467H7760H5315H3709H5674H1121H5983H3068H5414H3027H5927H3117H3898 4Now Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, "You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites and among the Manassites."H3316H6908H582H1568H3898H669H582H1568H5221H669H559H1568H6412H669H8432H669H8432H4519 5The Gileadites seized the fords of the Jordan before the Ephraimites arrived. And when any Ephraimite who escaped said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No,"H1568H3920H4569H3383H669H669H6412H559H5674H582H1568H559H673H559 6then they would say to him, "Then say, 'Shibboleth'!" And he would say, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it right. Then they would take him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. There fell at that time forty-two thousand Ephraimites.H559H559H7641H559H5451H3559H1696H3559H270H7819H4569H3383H5307H6256H669H705H8147H505 7And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in among the cities of Gilead.H3316H8199H3478H8337H8141H4191H3316H1569H6912H5892H1568
