Today's New International Version Help
16One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.H3212H8123H5804H7200H802H2181H935
2The people of Gaza were told, "Samson is here!" So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night, saying, "At dawn we'll kill him."H5841H559H8123H935H5437H693H3915H8179H5892H2790H3915H559H1242H216H2026
3But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.H8123H7901H2677H3915H6965H2677H3915H270H1817H8179H5892H8147H4201H5265H1280H7760H3802H5927H7218H2022H6440H2275
4Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah.H310H157H802H5158H7796H8034H1807
5The rulers of the Philistines went to her and said, "See if you can lure him into showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can over-power him so we may tie him up and subdue him. Each one of us will give you eleven hundred shekels of silver."H5633H6430H5927H559H6601H7200H1419H3581H3201H631H6031H5414H376H505H3967H3701
6So Delilah said to Samson, "Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you can be tied up and subdued."H1807H559H8123H5046H1419H3581H631H6031
7Samson answered her, "If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I'll become as weak as any other man."H8123H559H631H7651H3892H3499H2717H2470H259H120
8Then the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh thongs that had not been dried, and she tied him with them.H5633H6430H5927H7651H3892H3499H2717H631
9With men hidden in the room, she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" But he snapped the thongs as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.H693H3427H2315H559H6430H8123H5423H3499H6616H5296H5423H7306H784H3581H3045
10Then Delilah said to Samson, "You have made a fool of me; you lied to me. Come now, tell me how you can be tied."H1807H559H8123H2048H1696H3577H5046H631
11He said, "If anyone ties me securely with new ropes that have never been used, I'll become as weak as any other man."H559H631H631H2319H5688H4399H6213H2470H259H120
12So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them. Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" But he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they were threads.H1807H3947H2319H5688H631H559H6430H8123H693H3427H2315H5423H2220H2339
13Delilah then said to Samson, "Until now, you have been making a fool of me and lying to me. Tell me how you can be tied." He replied, "If you weave the seven braids of my head into the fabric on the loom and tighten it with the pin, I'll become as weak as any other man." So while he was sleeping, Delilah took the seven braids of his head, wove them into the fabricH1807H559H8123H2008H2048H1696H3577H5046H631H559H707H7651H4253H7218H4545
14and tightened it with the pin. Again she called to him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" He awoke from his sleep and pulled up the pin and the loom, with the fabric.H8628H3489H559H6430H8123H3364H8142H5265H3489H708H4545
15Then she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when you won't confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven't told me the secret of your great strength."H559H349H559H157H3820H2048H7969H6471H5046H1419H3581
16With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was tired to death.H6693H3117H1697H509H5315H7114H4191
17So he told her everything. "No razor has ever been used on my head," he said, "because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother's womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man."H5046H3820H559H5927H4177H7218H5139H430H517H990H1548H3581H5493H2470H120
18When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, "Come back once more; he has told me everything." So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands.H1807H7200H5046H3820H7971H7121H5633H6430H559H5927H6471H5046H3820H5633H6430H5927H5927H3701H3027
19Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.H3462H1290H7121H376H1548H7651H4253H7218H2490H6031H3581H5493
20Then she called, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" He awoke from his sleep and thought, "I'll go out as before and shake myself free." But he did not know that the LORD had left him.H559H6430H8123H3364H8142H559H3318H6471H5287H3045H3068H5493
21Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison.H6430H270H5365H5869H3381H5804H631H5178H2912H631H1004
22But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.H8181H7218H2490H6779H834H1548
23Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, "Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands."H5633H6430H622H2076H1419H2077H1712H430H8057H559H430H5414H8123H341H3027
24When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying, "Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands, the one who laid waste our land and multiplied our slain."H5971H7200H1984H430H559H430H5414H3027H341H2717H776H2491H7235
25While they were in high spirits, they shouted, "Bring out Samson to entertain us." So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them. When they stood him among the pillars,H3820H2896H559H7121H8123H7832H7121H8123H631H1004H6440H6711H5975H5982
26Samson said to the servant who held his hand, "Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them."H8123H559H5288H2388H3027H3240H4184H3237H5982H1004H3559H8172
27Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform.H1004H4390H582H802H5633H6430H1406H7969H505H376H802H7200H8123H7832
28Then Samson prayed to the LORD, "Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes."H8123H7121H3068H559H136H3069H2142H2388H6471H430H259H5358H5359H6430H8147H5869
29Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other,H8123H3943H8147H8432H5982H1004H3559H5564H259H3225H259H8040
30Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.H8123H559H4191H5315H6430H5186H3581H1004H5307H5633H5971H4191H4191H4194H7227H4191H2416
31Then his brothers and his father's whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had led Israel twenty years.H251H1004H1H3381H5375H5927H6912H6881H847H6913H4495H1H8199H3478H6242H8141
