Judges 18
Today's New International Version Help
18In those days Israel had no king. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.H3117H4428H3478H3117H7626H1839H1245H5159H3427H3117H5159H5307H8432H7626H3478
2So the Danites sent five of their leading men from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all the Danites. They told them, "Go, explore the land." So they entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night.H1121H1835H7971H4940H2568H582H7098H1121H2428H6881H847H7270H776H2713H559H3212H2713H776H935H2022H669H1004H4318H3885
3When they were near Micah's house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; so they turned in there and asked him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?"H1004H4318H5234H6963H5288H3881H5493H559H935H1988H6213
4He told them what Micah had done for him, and said, "He has hired me and I am his priest."H559H2090H2090H6213H4318H7936H3548
5Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful."H559H7592H430H3045H1870H1980H6743
6The priest answered them, "Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD's approval."H3548H559H3212H7965H5227H3068H1870H3212
7So the five men left and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living in safety, like the Sidonians, unsuspecting and secure. And since their land lacked nothing, they were prosperous. Also, they lived a long way from the Sidonians and had no relationship with anyone else.H2568H582H3212H935H3919H7200H5971H7130H3427H983H4941H6722H8252H982H3423H6114H776H3637H1697H7350H6722H1697H120
8When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, the Danites asked them, "How did you find things?"H935H251H6881H847H251H559
9They answered, "Come on, let's attack them! We have seen the land, and it is very good. Aren't you going to do something? Don't hesitate to go there and take it over.H559H6965H5927H7200H776H3966H2896H2814H6101H3212H935H3423H776
10When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever."H935H935H5971H982H7342H776H430H5414H3027H4725H4270H1697H776
11Then six hundred men of the Danites, armed for battle, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol.H5265H4940H1839H6881H847H8337H3967H376H2296H3627H4421
12On their way they set up camp near Kiriath Jearim in Judah. This is why the place west of Kiriath Jearim is called Mahaneh Dan to this day.H5927H2583H7157H3063H7121H4725H4265H3117H310H7157
13From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah's house.H5674H2022H669H935H1004H4318
14Then the five men who had spied out the land of Laish said to their fellow Danites, "Do you know that one of these houses has an ephod, some household gods and an image overlaid with silver? Now you know what to do."H6030H2568H582H1980H7270H776H3919H559H251H3045H3426H1004H646H8655H6459H4541H3045H6213
15So they turned in there and went to the house of the young Levite at Micah's place and greeted him.H5493H935H1004H5288H3881H1004H4318H7592H7965
16The six hundred Danites, armed for battle, stood at the entrance of the gate.H8337H3967H376H2296H3627H4421H1121H1835H5324H6607H8179
17The five men who had spied out the land went inside and took the idol, the ephod and the household gods while the priest and the six hundred armed men stood at the entrance of the gate.H2568H582H1980H7270H776H5927H935H3947H6459H646H8655H4541H3548H5324H6607H8179H8337H3967H376H2296H3627H4421
18When the five went into Micah's house and took the idol, the ephod and the household gods, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"H935H4318H1004H3947H6459H646H8655H4541H559H3548H6213
19They answered him, "Be quiet! Don't say a word. Come with us, and be our father and priest. Isn't it better that you serve a tribe and clan in Israel as priest rather than just one man's household?"H559H2790H7760H3027H6310H3212H1961H1H3548H2896H3548H1004H259H376H3548H7626H4940H3478
20The priest was very pleased. He took the ephod, the household gods and the idol and went along with the people.H3548H3820H3190H3947H646H8655H6459H935H7130H5971
21Putting their little children, their livestock and their possessions in front of them, they turned away and left.H6437H3212H7760H2945H4735H3520H6440
22When they had gone some distance from Micah's house, the men who lived near Micah were called together and overtook the Danites.H7368H1004H4318H582H1004H4318H1004H2199H1692H1121H1835
23As they shouted after them, the Danites turned and said to Micah, "What's the matter with you that you called out your men to fight?"H7121H1121H1835H5437H6440H559H4318H2199
24He replied, "You took the gods I made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you ask, 'What's the matter with you?' "H559H3947H430H6213H3548H3212H559
25The Danites answered, "Don't argue with us, or some of the men may get angry and attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives."H1121H1835H559H6963H8085H4751H5315H582H6293H622H5315H5315H1004
26So the Danites went their way, and Micah, seeing that they were too strong for him, turned around and went back home.H1121H1835H3212H1870H4318H7200H2389H6437H7725H1004
27Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a peaceful and unsuspecting people. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city.H3947H4318H6213H3548H935H3919H5971H8252H982H5221H6310H2719H8313H5892H784
28There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else. The city was in a valley near Beth Rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there.H5337H7350H6721H1697H120H6010H1050H1129H5892H3427
29They named it Dan after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city used to be called Laish.H7121H8034H5892H1835H8034H1835H1H3205H3478H199H8034H5892H3919H7223
30There the Danites set up for themselves the idol, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land.H1121H1835H6965H6459H3083H1121H1647H1121H4519H1121H3548H7626H1839H3117H1540H776
31They continued to use the idol Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh.H7760H4318H6459H6213H3117H1004H430H7887
