The Levite’s Concubine

19And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote mountains of Ephraim. He took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.H3117H4428H3478H376H3881H1481H3411H2022H669H3947H802H6370H1035H3063 2But his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, and was there four whole months.H6370H2181H3212H1H1004H1035H3063H702H2320H3117 3Then her husband arose and went after her, to speak kindly to her and bring her back, having his servant and a couple of donkeys with him. So she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the young woman saw him, he was glad to meet him.H376H6965H3212H310H1696H3820H7725H5288H6776H2543H935H1H1004H1H5291H7200H8055H7125 4Now his father-in-law, the young woman's father, detained him; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank and lodged there.H2859H5291H1H2388H3427H7969H3117H398H8354H3885 5Then it came to pass on the fourth day that they arose early in the morning, and he stood to depart; but the young woman's father said to his son-in-law, "Refresh your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way."H7243H3117H7925H1242H6965H3212H5291H1H559H2860H5582H3820H6595H3899H310H3212 6So they sat down, and the two of them ate and drank together. Then the young woman's father said to the man, "Please be content to stay all night, and let your heart be merry."H3427H398H8354H8147H3162H5291H1H559H376H2974H3885H3820H3190 7And when the man stood to depart, his father-in-law urged him; so he lodged there again.H376H6965H3212H2859H6484H3885H7725 8Then he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart, but the young woman's father said, "Please refresh your heart." So they delayed until afternoon; and both of them ate.H7925H1242H2549H3117H3212H5291H1H559H5582H3824H4102H3117H5186H398H8147 9And when the man stood to depart—he and his concubine and his servant—his father-in-law, the young woman's father, said to him, "Look, the day is now drawing toward evening; please spend the night. See, the day is coming to an end; lodge here, that your heart may be merry. Tomorrow go your way early, so that you may get home."H376H6965H3212H6370H5288H2859H5291H1H559H3117H7503H6150H3885H3117H2583H3885H3824H3190H4279H7925H1870H1980H168 10However, the man was not willing to spend that night; so he rose and departed, and came to opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). With him were the two saddled donkeys; his concubine was also with him.H376H14H3885H6965H3212H935H5227H2982H3389H6776H2543H2280H6370 11They were near Jebus, and the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, "Come, please, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it."H2982H3117H3966H7286H5288H559H113H3212H5493H5892H2983H3885 12But his master said to him, "We will not turn aside here into a city of foreigners, who are not of the children of Israel; we will go on to Gibeah."H113H559H5493H5892H5237H1121H3478H5674H1390 13So he said to his servant, "Come, let us draw near to one of these places, and spend the night in Gibeah or in Ramah."H559H5288H3212H7126H259H4725H3885H1390H7414 14And they passed by and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.H5674H3212H8121H935H681H1390H1144 15They turned aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah. And when he went in, he sat down in the open square of the city, for no one would take them into his house to spend the night.H5493H935H3885H1390H935H3427H7339H5892H376H622H1004H3885 16Just then an old man came in from his work in the field at evening, who also was from the mountains of Ephraim; he was staying in Gibeah, whereas the men of the place were Benjamites.H935H2205H376H4639H7704H6153H376H2022H669H1481H1390H582H4725H1145 17And when he raised his eyes, he saw the traveler in the open square of the city; and the old man said, "Where are you going, and where do you come from?"H5375H5869H7200H732H376H7339H5892H2205H376H559H3212H370H935 18So he said to him, "We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah toward the remote mountains of Ephraim; I am from there. I went to Bethlehem in Judah; now I am going to the house of the LORD. But there is no one who will take me into his house,H559H5674H1035H3063H3411H2022H669H3212H1035H3063H1980H1004H3068H376H622H1004 19"although we have both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and bread and wine for myself, for your female servant, and for the young man who is with your servant; there is no lack of anything."H3426H8401H4554H2543H3899H3196H519H5288H5650H4270H1697 20And the old man said, "Peace be with you! However, let all your needs be my responsibility; only do not spend the night in the open square."H2205H376H559H7965H7535H4270H3885H7339 21So he brought him into his house, and gave fodder to the donkeys. And they washed their feet, and ate and drank.H935H1004H1101H2543H7364H7272H398H8354

Gibeah’s Crime

22As they were enjoying themselves, suddenly certain men of the city, perverted men, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came to your house, that we may know him carnally!"H3820H3190H582H5892H582H1121H1100H5437H1004H5437H1849H1817H559H1167H1004H2205H376H559H3318H376H935H1004H3045 23But the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, "No, my brethren! I beg you, do not act so wickedly! Seeing this man has come into my house, do not commit this outrage.H376H1167H1004H3318H559H408H251H7489H310H376H935H1004H6213H5039 24"Look, here is my virgin daughter and the man's concubine; let me bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them as you please; but to this man do not do such a vile thing!"H1323H1330H6370H3318H6031H6213H5869H2896H376H6213H2063H5039H1697 25But the men would not heed him. So the man took his concubine and brought her out to them. And they knew her and abused her all night until morning; and when the day began to break, they let her go.H582H14H8085H376H2388H6370H3318H2351H3045H5953H3915H1242H7837H5927H7971 26Then the woman came as the day was dawning, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her master was, till it was light.H935H802H6437H1242H5307H6607H376H1004H113H216 27When her master arose in the morning, and opened the doors of the house and went out to go his way, there was his concubine, fallen at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.H113H6965H1242H6605H1817H1004H3318H3212H1870H802H6370H5307H6607H1004H3027H5592 28And he said to her, "Get up and let us be going." But there was no answer. So the man lifted her onto the donkey; and the man got up and went to his place.H559H6965H3212H6030H376H3947H2543H376H6965H3212H4725 29When he entered his house he took a knife, laid hold of his concubine, and divided her into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel.H935H1004H3947H3979H2388H6370H5408H6106H8147H6240H5409H7971H1366H3478 30And so it was that all who saw it said, "No such deed has been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up from the land of Egypt until this day. Consider it, confer, and speak up!"H1961H7200H559H2063H7200H3117H1121H3478H5927H776H4714H3117H7760H5779H1696
