Judges 19
Holman Christian Standard Bible Help
19In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a Levite living in a remote part of the hill country of Ephraim acquired a woman from Bethlehem in Judah as his concubine.H3117H4428H3478H376H3881H1481H3411H2022H669H3947H802H6370H1035H3063
2But she was unfaithful to him and left him for her father's house in Bethlehem in Judah. She was there for a period of four months.H6370H2181H3212H1H1004H1035H3063H702H2320H3117
3Then her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back. His servant and a couple of donkeys were with him. So she brought him to her father's house, and when the girl's father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.H376H6965H3212H310H1696H3820H7725H5288H6776H2543H935H1H1004H1H5291H7200H8055H7125
4His father-in-law, the girl's father, detained him, and he stayed with him for three days. They ate, drank, and spent the nights there.H2859H5291H1H2388H3427H7969H3117H398H8354H3885
5On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to go, but the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Have something to eat to keep up your strength and then you can go."H7243H3117H7925H1242H6965H3212H5291H1H559H2860H5582H3820H6595H3899H310H3212
6So they sat down and the two of them ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the man, "Please agree to stay overnight and enjoy yourself."H3427H398H8354H8147H3162H5291H1H559H376H2974H3885H3820H3190
7The man got up to go, but his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed and spent the night there again.H376H6965H3212H2859H6484H3885H7725
8He got up early in the morning of the fifth day to leave, but the girl's father said to him, "Please keep up your strength." So they waited until late afternoon and the two of them ate.H7925H1242H2549H3117H3212H5291H1H559H5582H3824H4102H3117H5186H398H8147
9The man got up to go with his concubine and his servant, when his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, "Look, night is coming. Please spend the night. See, the day is almost over. Spend the night here, enjoy yourself, then you can get up early tomorrow for your journey and go home."H376H6965H3212H6370H5288H2859H5291H1H559H3117H7503H6150H3885H3117H2583H3885H3824H3190H4279H7925H1870H1980H168
10But the man was unwilling to spend the night. He got up, departed, and arrived opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). The man had his two saddled donkeys and his concubine with him.H376H14H3885H6965H3212H935H5227H2982H3389H6776H2543H2280H6370
11When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, "Please, why not let us stop at this Jebusite city and spend the night here?"H2982H3117H3966H7286H5288H559H113H3212H5493H5892H2983H3885
12But his master replied to him, "We will not stop at a foreign city where there are no Israelites. Let's move on to Gibeah."H113H559H5493H5892H5237H1121H3478H5674H1390
13"Come on," he said, "let's try to reach one of these places and spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah."H559H5288H3212H7126H259H4725H3885H1390H7414
14So they continued on their journey, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.H5674H3212H8121H935H681H1390H1144
15They stopped to go in and spend the night in Gibeah. The Levite went in and sat down in the city square, but no one took them into their home to spend the night.H5493H935H3885H1390H935H3427H7339H5892H376H622H1004H3885
16In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim but was residing in Gibeah, and the men of that place were Benjaminites.H935H2205H376H4639H7704H6153H376H2022H669H1481H1390H582H4725H1145
17When he looked up and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, "Where are you going, and where do you come from?"H5375H5869H7200H732H376H7339H5892H2205H376H559H3212H370H935
18He answered him, "We're traveling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to Bethlehem in Judah, and now I'm going to the house of the LORD. No one has taken me into his home,H559H5674H1035H3063H3411H2022H669H3212H1035H3063H1980H1004H3068H376H622H1004
19although we have both straw and feed for our donkeys, and bread and wine for me, your female servant, and the young man with your servant. There is nothing we lack."H3426H8401H4554H2543H3899H3196H519H5288H5650H4270H1697
20"Peace to you," said the old man. "I'll take care of everything you need. Only don't spend the night in the square."H2205H376H559H7965H7535H4270H3885H7339
21So he brought him to his house and fed the donkeys. Then they washed their feet and ate and drank.H935H1004H1101H2543H7364H7272H398H8354
22While they were enjoying themselves, all of a sudden, perverted men of the city surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man who was the owner of the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him!"H3820H3190H582H5892H582H1121H1100H5437H1004H5437H1849H1817H559H1167H1004H2205H376H559H3318H376H935H1004H3045
23The owner of the house went out and said to them, "No, don't do [this] evil, my brothers. After all, this man has come into my house. Don't do this horrible thing.H376H1167H1004H3318H559H408H251H7489H310H376H935H1004H6213H5039
24Here, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man's concubine now. Use them and do whatever you want to them. But don't do this horrible thing to this man."H1323H1330H6370H3318H6031H6213H5869H2896H376H6213H2063H5039H1697
25But the men would not listen to him, so the man seized his concubine and took her outside to them. They raped her and abused her all night until morning. At daybreak they let her go.H582H14H8085H376H2388H6370H3318H2351H3045H5953H3915H1242H7837H5927H7971
26Early that morning, the woman made her way back, and as it was getting light, she collapsed at the doorway of the man's house where her master was.H935H802H6437H1242H5307H6607H376H1004H113H216
27When her master got up in the morning, opened the doors of the house, and went out to leave on his journey, there was the woman, his concubine, collapsed near the doorway of the house with her hands on the threshold.H113H6965H1242H6605H1817H1004H3318H3212H1870H802H6370H5307H6607H1004H3027H5592
28"Get up," he told her. "Let's go." But there was no response. So the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.H559H6965H3212H6030H376H3947H2543H376H6965H3212H4725
29When he entered his house, he picked up a knife, took hold of his concubine, cut her into 12 pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.H935H1004H3947H3979H2388H6370H5408H6106H8147H6240H5409H7971H1366H3478
30Everyone who saw it said, "Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen since the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt to this day. Think it over, discuss it, and speak up!"H1961H7200H559H2063H7200H3117H1121H3478H5927H776H4714H3117H7760H5779H1696
