Judah’s Leadership against the Canaanites

After the death of Joshua, the Israelites inquired of the LORD, "Who will be the first to fight for us against the Canaanites?"H310H4194H3091H1121H3478H7592H3068H559H5927H3669H8462H3898
The LORD answered, "Judah is to go. I have handed the land over to him."H3068H559H3063H5927H5414H776H3027
Judah said to his brother Simeon, "Come with me to my territory, and let us fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your territory." So Simeon went with him.H3063H559H8095H251H5927H1486H3898H3669H1980H1486H8095H3212
When Judah attacked, the LORD handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They struck down 10,000 men in Bezek.H3063H5927H3068H5414H3669H6522H3027H5221H966H6235H505H376
They found Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought against him, and struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites.H4672H137H966H3898H5221H3669H6522
When Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.H137H5127H7291H310H270H7112H931H3027H7272
Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up [scraps] under my table. God has repaid me for what I have done." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.H137H559H7657H4428H931H3027H7272H7112H3950H7979H6213H430H7999H935H3389H4191
The men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.H1121H3063H3898H3389H3920H5221H6310H2719H7971H5892H784
Afterwards, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the Canaanites who were living in the hill country, the Negev, and the Judean foothills.H310H1121H3063H3381H3898H3669H3427H2022H5045H8219
Judah also marched against the Canaanites who were living in Hebron (Hebron was formerly named Kiriath-arba). They struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.H3063H3212H3669H3427H2275H8034H2275H6440H7153H5221H8344H289H8526
From there they marched against the residents of Debir (Debir was formerly named Kiriath-sepher).H3212H3427H1688H8034H1688H6440H7158
Caleb said, "Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter Achsah to him as a wife."H3612H559H5221H7158H3920H5414H5915H1323H802
So Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as his wife.H6274H1121H7073H3612H6996H251H3920H5414H5915H1323H802
When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want?"H935H5496H7592H1H7704H6795H2543H3612H559
She answered him, "Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water also." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.H559H3051H1293H5414H5045H776H5414H1543H4325H3612H5414H5942H1543H8482H1543
The descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah, which was in the Negev of Arad. They went to live among the people.H1121H7017H4872H2859H5927H5892H8558H5899H1121H3063H4057H3063H5045H6166H3212H3427H854H5971
Judah went with his brother Simeon, struck the Canaanites who were living in Zephath, and completely destroyed the town. So they named the town Hormah.H3063H3212H8095H251H5221H3669H3427H6857H2763H8034H5892H7121H2767
Judah captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, and Ekron and its territory.H3063H3920H5804H1366H831H1366H6138H1366
The LORD was with Judah and enabled them to take possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the people who were living in the valley because those people had iron chariots.H3068H3063H3423H2022H3808H3423H3427H6010H7393H1270
Judah gave Hebron to Caleb, just as Moses had promised. Then Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak who lived there.H5414H2275H3612H4872H1696H3423H7969H1121H6061

Benjamin’s Failure

At the same time the Benjaminites did not drive out the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites have lived among the Benjaminites in Jerusalem to this day.H1121H1144H3423H2983H3427H3389H2983H3427H1121H1144H3389H3117

Success of the House of Joseph

The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.H1004H3130H5927H1008H3068
They sent spies to Bethel (the town was formerly named Luz).H1004H3130H8446H1008H8034H5892H6440H3870
The spies saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, "Please show us how to get into town, and we will treat you well."H8104H7200H376H3318H5892H559H7200H3996H5892H6213H2617
When he showed them the way into the town, they put the town to the sword but released the man and his entire family.H7200H3996H5892H5221H5892H6310H2719H7971H376H4940
Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and named it Luz. That is its name to this day.H376H3212H776H2850H1129H5892H7121H8034H3870H8034H3117

Failure of the Other Tribes

At that time Manasseh failed to take possession of Beth-sheanand its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the residents of Dor and its villages, or the residents of Ibleamand its villages, or the residents of Megiddo and its villages. But the Canaanites refused to leave this land.H4519H3423H1052H1323H8590H1323H3427H1756H1323H3427H2991H1323H3427H4023H1323H3669H2974H3427H776
When Israel became stronger, they made the Canaanites serve as forced labor but never drove them out completely.H3478H2388H7760H3669H4522H3423H3423
At that time Ephraim failed to drive out the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived among them in Gezer.H669H3423H3669H3427H1507H3669H3427H1507H7130
Zebulun failed to drive out the residents of Kitron or the residents of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them and served as forced labor.H2074H3423H3427H7003H3427H5096H3669H3427H7130H4522
Asher failed to drive out the residents of Acco or of Sidon, or Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob.H836H3423H3427H5910H3427H6721H303H392H2462H663H7340
The Asherites lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, because they failed to drive them out.H843H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H3423
Naphtali did not drive out the residents of Beth-shemesh or the residents of Beth-anath. They lived among the Canaanites who were living in the land, but the residents of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served as their forced labor.H5321H3423H3427H1053H3427H1043H3427H7130H3669H3427H776H3427H1053H1043H4522
The Amorites forced the Danites into the hill country and did not allow them to go down into the valley.H567H3905H1121H1835H2022H5414H3381H6010
The Amorites refused to leave Har-heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. When the house of Joseph got the upper hand, the Amorites were made to serve as forced labor.H567H2974H3427H2022H2776H357H8169H3027H1004H3130H3513H4522
The territory of the Amorites extended from the ascent of Akrabbim, that is from Sela upward.H1366H567H4608H4610H5553H4605
