Israel’s Disobedience

2Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, "I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you into the land that I had promised to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you.H4397H3068H5927H1537H1066H559H5927H4714H935H776H7650H1H559H5769H6565H1285 2For your part, do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; tear down their altars.' But you have not obeyed my command. See what you have done!H3772H1285H3427H776H5422H4196H8085H6963H6213 3So now I say, I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become adversaries to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you."H559H1644H6440H6654H430H4170 4When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the Israelites, the people lifted up their voices and wept.H4397H3068H1696H1697H1121H3478H5971H5375H6963H1058 5So they named that place Bochim, and there they sacrificed to the LORD.H7121H8034H4725H1066H2076H3068

Death of Joshua

6When Joshua dismissed the people, the Israelites all went to their own inheritances to take possession of the land.H3091H5971H7971H1121H3478H3212H376H5159H3423H776 7The people worshiped the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work that the LORD had done for Israel.H5971H5647H3068H3117H3091H3117H2205H748H3117H310H3091H7200H1419H4639H3068H6213H3478 8Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred ten years.H3091H1121H5126H5650H3068H4191H3967H6235H8141H1121 9So they buried him within the bounds of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.H6912H1366H5159H8556H2022H669H6828H2022H1608 10Moreover, that whole generation was gathered to their ancestors, and another generation grew up after them, who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.H1755H622H1H6965H312H1755H310H3045H3068H4639H6213H3478

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

11Then the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and worshiped the Baals;H1121H3478H6213H7451H5869H3068H5647H1168 12and they abandoned the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they followed other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were all around them, and bowed down to them; and they provoked the LORD to anger.H5800H3068H430H1H3318H776H4714H3212H310H312H430H430H5971H5439H7812H3068H3707 13They abandoned the LORD, and worshiped Baal and the Astartes.H5800H3068H5647H1168H6252 14So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers who plundered them, and he sold them into the power of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.H639H3068H2734H3478H5414H3027H8154H8155H4376H3027H341H5439H3201H5750H5975H6440H341 15Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them to bring misfortune, as the LORD had warned them and sworn to them; and they were in great distress.H3318H3027H3068H7451H3068H1696H3068H7650H3966H3334 16Then the LORD raised up judges, who delivered them out of the power of those who plundered them.H3068H6965H8199H3467H3027H8154 17Yet they did not listen even to their judges; for they lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their ancestors had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD; they did not follow their example.H8085H8199H2181H310H312H430H7812H5493H4118H1870H1H1980H8085H4687H3068H6213 18Whenever the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge, and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD would be moved to pity by their groaning because of those who persecuted and oppressed them.H3068H6965H8199H3068H8199H3467H3027H341H3117H8199H5162H3068H6440H5009H3905H1766 19But whenever the judge died, they would relapse and behave worse than their ancestors, following other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They would not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.H8199H4194H7725H7843H1H3212H310H312H430H5647H7812H5307H4611H7186H1870 20So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel; and he said, "Because this people have transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors, and have not obeyed my voice,H639H3068H2734H3478H559H1471H5674H1285H6680H1H8085H6963 21I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died."H3254H3423H376H6440H1471H3091H5800H4191 22In order to test Israel, whether or not they would take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their ancestors did,H5254H3478H8104H1870H3068H3212H1H8104 23the LORD had left those nations, not driving them out at once, and had not handed them over to Joshua.H3068H3240H1471H1115H3423H4118H5414H3027H3091
