Pattern of Sin and Judgment

The Angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt and led you into the land I had promised to your fathers. I also said: I will never break My covenant with you.H4397H3068H5927H1537H1066H559H5927H4714H935H776H7650H1H559H5769H6565H1285
You are not to make a covenant with the people who are living in this land, and you are to tear down their altars. But you have not obeyed Me. What is this you have done?H3772H1285H3427H776H5422H4196H8085H6963H6213
Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. They will be thornsin your sides, and their gods will be a trap to you."H559H1644H6440H6654H430H4170
When the Angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly.H4397H3068H1696H1697H1121H3478H5971H5375H6963H1058
So they named that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.H7121H8034H4725H1066H2076H3068

Joshua’s Death

Joshua sent the people away, and the Israelites went to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.H3091H5971H7971H1121H3478H3212H376H5159H3423H776
The people worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua's lifetime and during the lifetimes of the elders who outlived Joshua. They had seen all the LORD's great works He had done for Israel.H5971H5647H3068H3117H3091H3117H2205H748H3117H310H3091H7200H1419H4639H3068H6213H3478
Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110.H3091H1121H5126H5650H3068H4191H3967H6235H8141H1121
They buried him in the territory of his inheritance, in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.H6912H1366H5159H8556H2022H669H6828H2022H1608
That whole generation was also gathered to their ancestors. After them another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works He had done for Israel.H1755H622H1H6965H312H1755H310H3045H3068H4639H6213H3478
The Israelites did what was evil in the LORD's sight. They worshiped the BaalsH1121H3478H6213H7451H5869H3068H5647H1168
and abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They infuriated the LORD,H5800H3068H430H1H3318H776H4714H3212H310H312H430H430H5971H5439H7812H3068H3707
for they abandoned Him and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths.H5800H3068H5647H1168H6252
The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and He handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, so that they could no longer resist their enemies.H639H3068H2734H3478H5414H3027H8154H8155H4376H3027H341H5439H3201H5750H5975H6440H341
Whenever the Israelites went out, the LORD was against them and brought disaster [on them], just as He had promised and sworn to them. So they suffered greatly.H3318H3027H3068H7451H3068H1696H3068H7650H3966H3334
The LORD raised up judges, who saved them from the power of their marauders,H3068H6965H8199H3467H3027H8154
but they did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods, bowing down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commands. They did not do as their fathers did.H8085H8199H2181H310H312H430H7812H5493H4118H1870H1H1980H8085H4687H3068H6213
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, the LORD was with him and saved the people from the power of their enemies while the judge was still alive. The LORD was moved to pity whenever they groaned because of those who were oppressing and afflicting them.H3068H6965H8199H3068H8199H3467H3027H341H3117H8199H5162H3068H6440H5009H3905H1766
Whenever the judge died, the Israelites would act even more corruptly than their fathers, going after other gods to worship and bow down to them. They did not turn from their [evil] practices or their obstinate ways.H8199H4194H7725H7843H1H3212H310H312H430H5647H7812H5307H4611H7186H1870
The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He declared, "Because this nation has violated My covenant that I made with their fathers and disobeyed Me,H639H3068H2734H3478H559H1471H5674H1285H6680H1H8085H6963
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.H3254H3423H376H6440H1471H3091H5800H4191
[I did this] to test Israel and to see whether they would keep the LORD's way by walking in it, as their fathers had."H5254H3478H8104H1870H3068H3212H1H8104
The LORD left these nations and did not drive them out immediately. He did not hand them over to Joshua.H3068H3240H1471H1115H3423H4118H5414H3027H3091
