Unconquered Canaanite Nations

3Here's a list of nations that the Lord caused to remain in order to test Israel (that is, everyone who had not gained any battle experience in Canaan)H1471H3068H3240H5254H3478H3045H4421H3667
2only so that successive Israelite generations, who had not known war previously, might come to know it by experience.H7535H1755H1121H3478H3045H3925H4421H6440H3045
3These nations included the five lords of the Philistines, all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.H2568H5633H6430H3669H6722H2340H3427H2022H3844H2022H1179H935H2574
4They remained there to test Israel, to reveal if they would obey the commands of the Lord that he issued to their ancestors through Moses.H5254H3478H3045H8085H4687H3068H6680H1H3027H4872

Othniel, Israel’s First Judge

5The Israelites continued to live among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,H1121H3478H3427H7130H3669H2850H567H6522H2340H2983
6taking their daughters as wives for themselves, giving their own daughters to their sons, and serving their gods.H3947H1323H802H5414H1323H1121H5647H430
7The Israelites kept on practicing evil in full view of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served Canaanite male and female deities.H1121H3478H6213H7451H5869H3068H7911H3068H430H5647H1168H842
8Then in his burning anger against Israel, the Lord delivered them to domination by King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim. So the Israelites served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years.H639H3068H2734H3478H4376H3027H3573H4428H763H1121H3478H5647H3573H8083H8141
9When the Israelites cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up Othniel son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, to deliver them, and he did.H1121H3478H2199H3068H3068H6965H3467H1121H3478H3467H6274H1121H7073H3612H6996H251
10The Spirit of the Lord was on him, and he governed Israel. When Othniel went out to battle, the Lord handed king Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim into his control, and Othniel's domination of Cushan-rishathaim was strong.H7307H3068H8199H3478H3318H4421H3068H5414H3573H4428H763H3027H3027H5810H3573
11As a result, the land was quiet for 40 years. Then Kenaz' son Othniel died.H776H8252H705H8141H6274H1121H7073H4191

Ehud, Israel’s Second Judge

12The Israelites again practiced evil in full view of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab in his control over Israel, because they had practiced evil in full view of the Lord.H1121H3478H6213H7451H3254H5869H3068H3068H2388H5700H4428H4124H3478H6213H7451H5869H3068
13Eglon assembled together the Ammonites and the Amalekites, proceeded to attack Israel, and captured the cities of palms.H622H1121H5983H6002H3212H5221H3478H3423H5892H8558H5899
14So the Israelites served king Eglon of Moab for eighteen years.12H1121H3478H5647H5700H4428H4124H8083H6240H8141
15But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up Gera's son Ehud, a left-handed Benjaminite, as a deliverer for them. The Israelites paid tribute through him to king Eglon of Moab.H1121H3478H2199H3068H3068H6965H3467H164H1121H1617H1145H376H334H3225H3027H1121H3478H7971H4503H5700H4428H4124
16Ehud forged a double-edged sword that was one and a half feet long, tied it to his right thigh under his cloak,H164H6213H2719H8147H6366H1574H753H2296H4055H3225H3409
17and went to present the tribute to king Eglon of Moab. Now Eglon happened to be a very obese man.H7126H4503H5700H4428H4124H5700H3966H1277H376
18As he finished presenting the tribute, Ehud sent away the people who had been carrying it.H3615H7126H4503H7971H5971H5375H4503
19He had turned away from the idols that were at Gilgal. So he told Eglon, "I have a secret message for you, king." King Eglon responded "Silence!" and all of his attendants left him.H7725H6456H1537H559H5643H1697H4428H559H2013H5975H3318
20Ehud approached him while he was sitting by himself in the cool roof chamber of his palace. He said, "I have a message from God for you!" So when Eglon got up from his seat,H164H935H3427H4747H5944H164H559H1697H430H6965H3678
21Ehud used his left hand to take the sword from his right thigh and then plunged it into Eglon's abdomen.H164H7971H8040H3027H3947H2719H3225H3409H8628H990
22The hilt also penetrated along with the sword blade, and Eglon's fat closed in over the blade. Because he did not withdraw the sword from Eglon's abdomen, the sword point exited from Eglon's entrails.H5325H935H310H3851H2459H5462H1157H3851H8025H2719H990H6574H3318
23Then Ehud left the cool chamber in the direction of the vestibule, shutting and locking the doors behind him.H164H3318H4528H5462H1817H5944H5274
24After he left, Eglon's attendants came to look, but the doors to the cool chamber were locked! So they said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner part of the cool chamber."H3318H5650H935H7200H1817H5944H5274H559H5526H7272H4747H2315
25They waited until they were embarrassed, since he never opened the doors to the chamber. Eventually they took a key, opened the doors, and found their master dead on the ground.3H2342H954H6605H1817H5944H3947H4668H6605H113H5307H4191H776
26Meanwhile, Ehud escaped while they were delayed, passed by the idols, and escaped in the direction of Seirah.H164H4422H4102H5674H6456H4422H8167
27When he arrived there, he sounded a trumpet in the mountainous region of Ephraim. While the Israelite army accompanied Ehud from the mountainous regions,H935H8628H7782H2022H669H1121H3478H3381H2022H6440
28he told them, "Attack them, because the Lord has given your enemies - the Moabites - into your control." So the Israelite army followed after him, seized the fords of the Jordan River opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.H559H7291H310H3068H5414H341H4124H3027H3381H310H3920H4569H3383H4124H5414H376H5674
29At that time they attacked about 10,000 Moabites, all of whom were strong and valiant men. Not one man escaped.H5221H4124H6256H6235H505H376H8082H376H2428H4422H376
30As a result, Moab was subdued under the control of Israel, and the land remained quiet for 80 years.H4124H3665H3117H3027H3478H776H8252H8084H8141

Shamgar, Israel’s Third Judge

31After Ehud, Anath's son Shamgar attacked 600 Philistines with a cattle prod. He also delivered Israel.H310H8044H1121H6067H5221H6430H8337H3967H376H1241H4451H3467H3478
