Judges 4
New International Version (1984) Help
4After Ehud died, the Israelites once again did evil in the eyes of the LORD.H1121H3478H3254H6213H7451H5869H3068H164H4191
2So the LORD sold them into the hands of Jabin, a king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth Haggoyim.H3068H4376H3027H2985H4428H3667H4427H2674H8269H6635H5516H3427H2800H1471
3Because he had nine hundred iron chariots and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the LORD for help.H1121H3478H6817H3068H8672H3967H7393H1270H6242H8141H2394H3905H1121H3478
4Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.H1683H5031H802H3941H8199H3478H6256
5She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came to her to have their disputes decided.H3427H8560H1683H7414H1008H2022H669H1121H3478H5927H4941
6She sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, "The LORD, the God of Israel, commands you: 'Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead the way to Mount Tabor.H7971H7121H1301H1121H42H6943H559H3068H430H3478H6680H3212H4900H2022H8396H3947H6235H505H376H1121H5321H1121H2074
7I will lure Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give him into your hands.'"H4900H5158H7028H5516H8269H2985H6635H7393H1995H5414H3027
8Barak said to her, "If you go with me, I will go; but if you don't go with me, I won't go."H1301H559H3212H1980H3212H3212
9"Very well," Deborah said, "I will go with you. But because of the way you are going about this, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will hand Sisera over to a woman." So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh,H559H1980H3212H657H1870H1980H8597H3068H4376H5516H3027H802H1683H6965H3212H1301H6943
10where he summoned Zebulun and Naphtali. Ten thousand men followed him, and Deborah also went with him.H1301H2199H2074H5321H6943H5927H6235H505H376H7272H1683H5927
11Now Heber the Kenite had left the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, Moses' brother-in-law, and pitched his tent by the great tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh.H2268H7017H1121H2246H2859H4872H6504H7017H5186H168H436H6815H6943
12When they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,H5046H5516H1301H1121H42H5927H2022H8396
13Sisera gathered together his nine hundred iron chariots and all the men with him, from Harosheth Haggoyim to the Kishon River.H5516H2199H7393H8672H3967H7393H1270H5971H2800H1471H5158H7028
14Then Deborah said to Barak, "Go! This is the day the LORD has given Sisera into your hands. Has not the LORD gone ahead of you?" So Barak went down Mount Tabor, followed by ten thousand men.H1683H559H1301H6965H3117H3068H5414H5516H3027H3068H3318H6440H1301H3381H2022H8396H6235H505H376H310
15At Barak's advance, the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera abandoned his chariot and fled on foot.H3068H2000H5516H7393H4264H6310H2719H6440H1301H5516H3381H4818H5127H7272
16But Barak pursued the chariots and army as far as Harosheth Haggoyim. All the troops of Sisera fell by the sword; not a man was left.H1301H7291H310H7393H4264H2800H1471H4264H5516H5307H6310H2719H259H7604
17Sisera, however, fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there were friendly relations between Jabin king of Hazor and the clan of Heber the Kenite.H5516H5127H7272H168H3278H802H2268H7017H7965H2985H4428H2674H1004H2268H7017
18Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, "Come, my lord, come right in. Don't be afraid." So he entered her tent, and she put a covering over him.H3278H3318H7125H5516H559H5493H113H5493H3372H5493H168H3680H8063
19"I'm thirsty," he said. "Please give me some water." She opened a skin of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up.H559H4592H4325H8248H6770H6605H4997H2461H8248H3680
20"Stand in the doorway of the tent," he told her. "If someone comes by and asks you, 'Is anyone here?' say 'No.'"H559H5975H6607H168H376H935H7592H559H3426H376H3426H559
21But Jael, Heber's wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died.H3278H2268H802H3947H3489H168H7760H4718H3027H935H3814H8628H3489H7541H6795H776H7290H5774H4191
22Barak came by in pursuit of Sisera, and Jael went out to meet him. "Come," she said, "I will show you the man you're looking for." So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera with the tent peg through his temple--dead.H1301H7291H5516H3278H3318H7125H559H3212H7200H376H1245H935H5516H5307H4191H3489H7541
23On that day God subdued Jabin, the Canaanite king, before the Israelites.H430H3665H3117H2985H4428H3667H6440H1121H3478
24And the hand of the Israelites grew stronger and stronger against Jabin, the Canaanite king, until they destroyed him.H3027H1121H3478H3212H1980H7186H2985H4428H3667H3772H2985H4428H3667
