Zebah and Zalmunna Routed

8Then the men of Ephraim said to him, "What is this thing you have done to us, not calling us when you went to fight against Midian?" And they contended with him vigorously.H376H669H559H4100H6213H1697H7121H1980H3898H4080H7378H2394 2But he said to them, "What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning [of the grapes] of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?H559H6213H5955H669H2896H1210H44 3"God has given the leaders of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb into your hands; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?" Then their anger toward him subsided when he said that.H430H5414H3027H8269H4080H6159H2062H3201H6213H7307H7503H1697H1696 4Then Gideon and the 300 men who were with him came to the Jordan [ and] crossed over, weary yet pursuing.H1439H935H3383H5674H7969H3967H376H5889H7291 5And he said to the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the people who are following me, for they are weary, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."H559H582H5523H5414H3603H3899H5971H7272H5889H7291H310H2078H6759H4428H4080 6And the leaders of Succoth said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hands, that we should give bread to your army?"H8269H5523H559H3709H2078H6759H3027H5414H3899H6635 7And Gideon said, "All right, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will thrash your bodies with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers."H1439H559H3068H5414H2078H6759H3027H1758H1320H6975H4057H1303 8And he went up from there to Penuel, and spoke similarly to them; and the men of Penuel answered him just as the men of Succoth had answered.H5927H6439H1696H2063H582H6439H6030H582H5523H6030 9So he spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, "When I return safely, I will tear down this tower."H559H582H6439H559H7725H7965H5422H4026 10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about 150000 men, all who were left of the entire army of the sons of the east; for the fallen were 1200000 swordsmen.H2078H6759H7174H4264H2568H6240H505H3498H4264H1121H6924H5307H3967H6242H505H376H8025H2719 11And Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and attacked the camp, when the camp was unsuspecting.H1439H5927H1870H7931H168H6924H5025H3011H5221H4264H4264H983 12When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed the whole army.H2078H6759H5127H7291H310H3920H8147H4428H4080H2078H6759H2729H4264 13Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres.H1439H1121H3101H7725H4421H4608H2775 14And he captured a youth from Succoth and questioned him. Then [the youth] wrote down for him the princes of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men.H3920H5288H582H5523H7592H3789H8269H5523H2205H7657H7651H376 15And he came to the men of Succoth and said, "Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom you taunted me, saying, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?'"H935H582H5523H559H2078H6759H2778H559H3709H2078H6759H3027H5414H3899H582H3287 16And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and he disciplined the men of Succoth with them.H3947H2205H5892H6975H4057H1303H3045H582H5523 17And he tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.H5422H4026H6439H2026H582H5892 18Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, "What kind of men [were] they whom you killed at Tabor?" And they said, "They were like you, each one resembling the son of a king."H559H2078H6759H375H582H2026H8396H559H3644H259H8389H1121H4428 19And he said, "They [were] my brothers, the sons of my mother. [As] the LORD lives, if only you had let them live, I would not kill you."H559H251H1121H517H3068H2416H3863H2421H2026 20So he said to Jether his first-born, "Rise, kill them." But the youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a youth.H559H3500H1060H6965H2026H5288H8025H2719H3372H5288 21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Rise up yourself, and fall on us; for as the man, so is his strength." So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments which were on their camels' necks.H2078H6759H559H6965H6293H376H1369H1439H6965H2026H2078H6759H3947H7720H1581H6677 22Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us, both you and your son, also your son's son, for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian."H376H3478H559H1439H4910H1121H1121H1121H3467H3027H4080 23But Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; the LORD shall rule over you."H1439H559H4910H1121H4910H3068H4910 24Yet Gideon said to them, "I would request of you, that each of you give me an earring from his spoil." (For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)H1439H559H7592H7596H5414H376H5141H7998H2091H5141H3459 25And they said, "We will surely give [them.]" So they spread out a garment, and every one of them threw an earring there from his spoil.H559H5414H5414H6566H8071H7993H376H5141H7998 26And the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 17000 [shekels] of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple robes which [were] on the kings of Midian, and besides the neck bands that [were] on their camels' necks.H4948H2091H5141H7592H505H7651H3967H2091H7720H5188H713H899H4428H4080H6060H1581H6677 27And Gideon made it into an ephod, and placed it in his city, Ophrah, and all Israel played the harlot with it there, so that it became a snare to Gideon and his household.H1439H6213H646H3322H5892H6084H3478H2181H310H4170H1439H1004

Forty Years of Peace

28So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they did not lift up their heads anymore. And the land was undisturbed for forty years in the days of Gideon.H4080H3665H6440H1121H3478H5375H7218H3254H776H8252H705H8141H3117H1439 29Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.H3378H1121H3101H3212H3427H1004 30Now Gideon had seventy sons who were his direct descendants, for he had many wives.H1439H7657H1121H3409H3318H7227H802 31And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.H6370H7927H3205H1121H8034H7760H40 32And Gideon the son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.H1439H1121H3101H4191H2896H7872H6912H6913H3101H1H6084H33 33Then it came about, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the sons of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-berith their god.H1439H4191H1121H3478H7725H2181H310H1168H7760H1170H430 34Thus the sons of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side;H1121H3478H2142H3068H430H5337H3027H341H5439 35nor did they show kindness to the household of Jerubbaal ([that is,] Gideon), in accord with all the good that he had done to Israel.H6213H2617H1004H3378H1439H2896H6213H3478
