The Sabbath Year

25The LORD said to Moses on Mount Sinai,H3068H1696H4872H2022H5514H559 2"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.H1696H1121H3478H559H935H776H5414H776H7673H7676H3068 3For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.H8337H8141H2232H7704H8337H8141H2168H3754H622H8393 4But in the seventh year the land is to have a sabbath of rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.H7637H8141H7676H7677H776H7676H3068H2232H7704H2168H3754 5Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.H5599H7105H7114H1219H6025H5139H8141H7677H776 6Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you—for yourself, your manservant and maidservant, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you,H7676H776H402H5650H519H7916H8453H1481 7as well as for your livestock and the wild animals in your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.H929H2416H776H8393H398

The Year of Jubilee

8"'Count off seven sabbaths of years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbaths of years amount to a period of forty-nine years.H5608H7651H7676H8141H7651H6471H7651H8141H3117H7651H7676H8141H705H8672H8141 9Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land.H7782H8643H5674H6218H7637H2320H3117H3725H7782H5674H776 10Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his family property and each to his own clan.H6942H2572H8141H8141H7121H1865H776H3427H3104H7725H376H272H7725H376H4940 11The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines.H3104H2572H8141H8141H2232H7114H5599H1219H5139 12For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields.H3104H6944H398H8393H7704 13"'In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to his own property.H8141H3104H7725H376H272 14"'If you sell land to one of your countrymen or buy any from him, do not take advantage of each other.H4376H4465H5997H7069H5997H3027H3238H376H251 15You are to buy from your countryman on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And he is to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops.H4557H8141H310H3104H7069H5997H4557H8141H8393H4376 16When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what he is really selling you is the number of crops.H6310H7230H8141H7235H4736H6310H4591H8141H4591H4736H4557H8393H4376 17Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.H3238H376H5997H3372H430H3068H430 18"'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land.H6213H2708H8104H4941H6213H3427H776H983 19Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.H776H5414H6529H398H7648H3427H983 20You may ask, "What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?"H559H398H7637H8141H2232H622H8393 21I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.H6680H1293H8345H8141H6213H8393H7969H8141 22While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.H2232H8066H8141H398H3465H8393H8671H8141H8393H935H398H3465 23"'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.H776H4376H6783H776H1616H8453 24Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.H776H272H5414H1353H776 25"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of his property, his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has sold.H251H4134H4376H272H7138H935H1350H1350H251H4465 26If, however, a man has no one to redeem it for him but he himself prospers and acquires sufficient means to redeem it,H376H1350H3027H1767H5381H4672H1353 27he is to determine the value for the years since he sold it and refund the balance to the man to whom he sold it; he can then go back to his own property.H2803H8141H4465H7725H5736H376H4376H7725H272 28But if he does not acquire the means to repay him, what he sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and he can then go back to his property.H3027H1767H4672H7725H4465H3027H7069H8141H3104H3104H3318H7725H272 29"'If a man sells a house in a walled city, he retains the right of redemption a full year after its sale. During that time he may redeem it.H376H4376H4186H1004H2346H5892H1353H8552H8141H4465H3117H1353 30If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and his descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee.H1350H4390H8549H8141H1004H2346H5892H6965H6783H7069H1755H3318H3104 31But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.H1004H2691H2346H5439H2803H7704H776H1353H3318H3104 32"'The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess.H5892H3881H1004H5892H272H3881H1353H5769 33So the property of the Levites is redeemable—that is, a house sold in any town they hold—and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites.H1350H3881H1004H4465H5892H272H3318H3104H1004H5892H3881H272H8432H1121H3478 34But the pastureland belonging to their towns must not be sold; it is their permanent possession.H7704H4054H5892H4376H5769H272 35"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you.H251H4134H4131H3027H2388H1616H8453H2416 36Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you.H3947H5392H8636H3372H430H251H2416 37You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit.H5414H3701H5392H5414H400H4768 38I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.H3068H430H3318H776H4714H5414H776H3667H430 39"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor among you and sells himself to you, do not make him work as a slave.H251H4134H4376H5647H5656H5650 40He is to be treated as a hired worker or a temporary resident among you; he is to work for you until the Year of Jubilee.H7916H8453H5647H8141H3104 41Then he and his children are to be released, and he will go back to his own clan and to the property of his forefathers.H3318H1121H7725H4940H272H1H7725 42Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves.H5650H3318H776H4714H4376H4466H5650 43Do not rule over them ruthlessly, but fear your God.H7287H6531H3372H430 44"'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.H5650H519H1471H5439H7069H5650H519 45You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.H1121H8453H1481H7069H4940H3205H776H272 46You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.H5157H1121H310H3423H272H5647H5769H251H1121H3478H7287H376H251H6531 47"'If an alien or a temporary resident among you becomes rich and one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells himself to the alien living among you or to a member of the alien's clan,H1616H8453H5381H3027H251H4134H4376H1616H8453H6133H1616H4940 48he retains the right of redemption after he has sold himself. One of his relatives may redeem him:H310H4376H1353H259H251H1350 49An uncle or a cousin or any blood relative in his clan may redeem him. Or if he prospers, he may redeem himself.H1730H1730H1121H1350H7607H1320H4940H1350H5381H1350H3027 50He and his buyer are to count the time from the year he sold himself up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for his release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired man for that number of years.H2803H7069H8141H4376H8141H3104H3701H4465H4557H8141H3117H7916 51If many years remain, he must pay for his redemption a larger share of the price paid for him.H7227H8141H6310H7725H1353H3701H4736 52If only a few years remain until the Year of Jubilee, he is to compute that and pay for his redemption accordingly.H7604H4592H8141H8141H3104H2803H6310H8141H7725H1353 53He is to be treated as a man hired from year to year; you must see to it that his owner does not rule over him ruthlessly.H8141H8141H7916H7287H6531H5869 54"'Even if he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee,H1350H3318H8141H3104H1121 55for the Israelites belong to me as servants. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.H1121H3478H5650H5650H3318H776H4714H3068H430
