Luke 14
The Message Help
14One time when Jesus went for a Sabbath meal with one of the top leaders of the Pharisees, all the guests had their eyes on him, watching his every move.G2532G1096G1722G846G2064G1519G3624G5100G758G5330G5315G740G4521G2532G846G2258G3906G846 2Right before him there was a man hugely swollen in his joints.G2532G2400G2258G5100G444G1715G846G5203 3So Jesus asked the religion scholars and Pharisees present, "Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath? Yes or no?"G2532G2424G611G2036G4314G3544G2532G5330G3004G1487G1832G2323G4521 4They were silent. So he took the man, healed him, and sent him on his way.G1161G2270G2532G1949G2390G846G2532G630 5Then he said, "Is there anyone here who, if a child or animal fell down a well, wouldn't rush to pull him out immediately, not asking whether or not it was the Sabbath?"G2532G611G4314G846G2036G5101G5216G3688G2228G1016G1706G1519G5421G2532G385G3756G2112G385G846G385G1722G4521G2250 6They were stumped. There was nothing they could say to that.G2532G2480G3756G470G846G470G4314G5023

Invite the Misfits

7He went on to tell a story to the guests around the table. Noticing how each had tried to elbow into the place of honor, he said,G1161G3004G3850G4314G2564G1907G4459G1586G4411G3004G4314G846 8"When someone invites you to dinner, don't take the place of honor. Somebody more important than you might have been invited by the host.G3752G2564G5259G5100G1519G1062G2625G3361G2625G1519G4411G3379G1784G4675G5600G2564G5259G846 9Then he'll come and call out in front of everybody, 'You're in the wrong place. The place of honor belongs to this man.' Red-faced, you'll have to make your way to the very last table, the only place left.G2532G2564G4571G2532G846G2064G2046G4671G1325G5129G5117G2532G5119G756G3326G152G2722G2078G5117 10"When you're invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, 'Friend, come up to the front.' That will give the dinner guests something to talk about!G235G3752G2564G4198G377G1519G2078G5117G2443G3752G2564G4571G2064G2036G4671G5384G4320G511G5119G4671G2071G1391G1799G4873G4671 11What I'm saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you're going to end up flat on your face. But if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself."G3754G3956G5312G1438G5013G2532G5013G1438G5312 12Then he turned to the host. "The next time you put on a dinner, don't just invite your friends and family and rich neighbors, the kind of people who will return the favor.G1161G3004G2532G2564G846G3752G4160G712G2228G1173G5455G3361G4675G5384G3366G4675G80G3366G4675G4773G3366G4145G1069G3379G846G2532G479G4571G479G2532G468G1096G4671 13Invite some people who never get invited out, the misfits from the wrong side of the tracks.G235G3752G4160G1403G2564G4434G376G5560G5185 14You'll be—and experience—a blessing. They won't be able to return the favor, but the favor will be returned—oh, how it will be returned!—at the resurrection of God's people."G2532G2071G3107G3754G3756G2192G467G4671G1063G4671G467G1722G386G1342

The Story of the Dinner Party

15That triggered a response from one of the guests: "How fortunate the one who gets to eat dinner in God's kingdom!"G1161G5100G4873G191G5023G2036G846G3107G3739G5315G740G1722G932G2316 16Jesus followed up. "Yes. For there was once a man who threw a great dinner party and invited many.G1161G2036G846G5100G444G4160G3173G1173G2532G2564G4183 17When it was time for dinner, he sent out his servant to the invited guests, saying, 'Come on in; the food's on the table.'G2532G649G846G1401G1173G5610G2036G2564G2064G3754G3956G2076G2235G2092 18"Then they all began to beg off, one after another making excuses. The first said, 'I bought a piece of property and need to look it over. Send my regrets.'G2532G3956G575G3391G756G3868G4413G2036G846G59G68G2532G2192G318G1831G2532G1492G846G2065G4571G2192G3165G3868 19"Another said, 'I just bought five teams of oxen, and I really need to check them out. Send my regrets.'G2532G2087G2036G59G4002G2201G1016G2532G4198G1381G846G2065G4571G2192G3165G3868 20"And yet another said, 'I just got married and need to get home to my wife.'G2532G2087G2036G1060G1135G2532G1223G5124G3756G1410G2064 21"The servant went back and told the master what had happened. He was outraged and told the servant, 'Quickly, get out into the city streets and alleys. Collect all who look like they need a square meal, all the misfits and homeless and wretched you can lay your hands on, and bring them here.'G2532G1565G1401G3854G518G846G2962G5023G5119G3617G3710G2036G846G1401G1831G5030G1519G4113G2532G4505G4172G2532G1521G5602G4434G2532G376G2532G5560G2532G5185 22"The servant reported back, 'Master, I did what you commanded—and there's still room.'G2532G1401G2036G2962G1096G5613G2004G2532G2089G2076G5117 23"The master said, 'Then go to the country roads. Whoever you find, drag them in. I want my house full!G2532G2962G2036G4314G1401G1831G1519G3598G2532G5418G2532G315G1525G2443G3450G3624G1072 24Let me tell you, not one of those originally invited is going to get so much as a bite at my dinner party.'"G1063G3004G5213G3754G3762G1565G435G3588G2564G1089G3450G1173

Figure the Cost

25One day when large groups of people were walking along with him, Jesus turned and told them,G1161G4848G4183G3793G846G2532G4762G2036G4314G846 26"Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters—yes, even one's own self!—can't be my disciple.G1536G2064G4314G3165G2532G3404G3756G1438G3962G2532G3384G2532G1135G2532G5043G2532G80G2532G79G2089G1161G1438G5590G2532G3756G1410G1511G3450G3101 27Anyone who won't shoulder his own cross and follow behind me can't be my disciple.G2532G3748G941G3756G941G846G4716G2532G2064G3694G3450G3756G1410G1511G3450G3101 28"Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn't first sit down and figure the cost so you'll know if you can complete it?G1063G5101G1537G5216G2309G3618G4444G2523G3780G2523G4412G5585G1160G1487G2192G4314G535 29If you only get the foundation laid and then run out of money, you're going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at you:G3363G3379G846G5087G2310G2532G2480G3361G2480G1615G3956G2334G756G1702G846 30'He started something he couldn't finish.'G3004G3754G3778G444G756G3618G2532G2480G3756G2480G1615 31"Or can you imagine a king going into battle against another king without first deciding whether it is possible with his ten thousand troops to face the twenty thousand troops of the other?G2228G5101G935G4198G4820G4171G1519G2087G935G2523G3780G2523G4412G1011G1487G2076G1415G1722G1176G5505G528G2064G1909G846G3326G1501G5505 32And if he decides he can't, won't he send an emissary and work out a truce?G1490G846G5607G2089G4206G649G4242G2065G4314G1515 33"Simply put, if you're not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can't be my disciple.G3779G3767G3956G1537G5216G3739G657G3756G3956G5224G1438G3756G1410G1511G3450G3101 34"Salt is excellent. But if the salt goes flat, it's useless, good for nothing. "Are you listening to this? Really listening?"G217G2570G1161G1437G217G3471G1722G5101G741 35(SEE 14:34)G2076G3777G2111G1519G1093G3777G1519G2874G906G846G1854G2192G3775G191G191
