The Question about Jesus’ Authority

20One day when Jesus was in the Temple teaching the people and preaching the Good News, the chief priests and the teachers of the Law, together with the elders, cameG2532G1096G1722G3391G1565G2250G846G1321G2992G1722G2411G2532G2097G749G2532G1122G2186G4862G4245
2and said to him, "Tell us, what right do you have to do these things? Who gave you such right?"G2532G2036G4314G846G3004G2036G2254G1722G4169G1849G4160G5023G2228G5101G2076G1325G4671G5026G1849
3Jesus answered them, "Now let me ask you a question. Tell me,G1161G611G2036G4314G846G2504G2065G2504G2065G5209G1520G3056G2532G2036G3427
4did John's right to baptize come from God or from human beings?"G908G2491G2258G1537G3772G2228G1537G444
5They started to argue among themselves, "What shall we say? If we say, 'From God,' he will say, 'Why, then, did you not believe John?'G1161G4817G4314G1438G3004G3754G1437G2036G1537G3772G2046G1302G3767G4100G846G3756
6But if we say, 'From human beings,' this whole crowd here will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet."G1161G1437G2036G1537G444G3956G2992G2642G2248G1063G2076G3982G2491G1511G4396
7So they answered, "We don't know where it came from."G2532G611G1492G3361G1492G4159
8And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you, then, by what right I do these things."G2532G2424G2036G846G3761G3004G1473G5213G1722G4169G1849G4160G5023

The Parable of the Tenants in the Vineyard

9Then Jesus told the people this parable: "There was once a man who planted a vineyard, rented it out to tenants, and then left home for a long time.G1161G756G3004G4314G2992G5026G3850G5100G444G5452G290G2532G1554G846G1554G1092G2532G589G2425G5550
10When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent a slave to the tenants to receive from them his share of the harvest. But the tenants beat the slave and sent him back without a thing.G2532G1722G2540G649G1401G4314G1092G2443G1325G846G575G2590G290G1161G1092G1194G846G1821G2756
11So he sent another slave; but the tenants beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him back without a thing.G2532G4369G3992G2087G1401G1161G1194G2548G2532G818G1821G2756
12Then he sent a third slave; the tenants wounded him, too, and threw him out.G2532G4369G3992G5154G1161G5135G5126G2532G1544
13Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my own dear son; surely they will respect him!'G1161G2036G2962G290G5101G4160G3992G3450G27G5207G2481G1788G1492G5126
14But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another, 'This is the owner's son. Let's kill him, and his property will be ours!'G1161G1092G1492G846G1260G4314G1438G3004G3778G2076G2818G1205G615G846G2443G2817G1096G2257
15So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. "What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to the tenants?" Jesus asked.G2532G1544G846G1854G290G615G5101G3767G4160G2962G290G4160G846
16"He will come and kill those men, and turn the vineyard over to other tenants." When the people heard this, they said, "Surely not!"G2064G2532G622G5128G1092G2532G1325G290G243G1161G191G2036G3361G1096
17Jesus looked at them and asked, "What, then, does this scripture mean? 'The stone which the builders rejected as worthless turned out to be the most important of all.'G1161G1689G846G2036G5101G2076G5124G3767G1125G3037G3739G3618G593G3778G1096G2776G1519G1137
18Everyone who falls on that stone will be cut to pieces; and if that stone falls on someone, that person will be crushed to dust."G3956G4098G1909G1565G3037G4917G1161G1909G3739G302G4098G3039G846G3039

The Question about Paying Taxes

19The teachers of the Law and the chief priests tried to arrest Jesus on the spot, because they knew that he had told this parable against them; but they were afraid of the people.G2532G749G2532G1122G1722G846G5610G2212G1911G5495G1909G846G2532G5399G2992G1063G1097G3754G2036G5026G3850G4314G846
20So they looked for an opportunity. They bribed some men to pretend they were sincere, and they sent them to trap Jesus with questions, so that they could hand him over to the authority and power of the Roman Governor.G2532G3906G649G1455G5271G1511G1438G1342G2443G1949G846G3056G1519G3860G846G746G2532G1849G2232
21These spies said to Jesus, "Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is right. We know that you pay no attention to anyone's status, but teach the truth about God's will for people.G2532G1905G846G3004G1320G1492G3754G3004G2532G1321G3723G2532G3756G2983G4383G235G1321G3598G2316G225G1909
22Tell us, is it against our Law for us to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor, or not?"G1832G2254G1325G5411G2541G2228G3756
23But Jesus saw through their trick and said to them,G1161G2657G846G3834G2036G4314G846G5101G3985G3165
24"Show me a silver coin. Whose face and name are these on it?" "The Emperor's," they answered.G1925G3427G1220G5101G1504G2532G1923G2192G611G1161G2036G2541
25So Jesus said, "Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God."G1161G2036G846G591G5106G2541G3588G2541G2532G2316G3588G2316
26There before the people they could not catch him in a thing, so they kept quiet, amazed at his answer.G2532G2480G3756G1949G846G4487G1726G2992G2532G2296G1909G846G612G4601

The Question about Rising from Death

27Then some Sadducees, who say that people will not rise from death, came to Jesus and said,G1161G4334G5100G4523G3588G483G1511G3361G386G1905G846
28"Teacher, Moses wrote this law for us: 'If a man dies and leaves a wife but no children, that man's brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children.'G3004G1320G3475G1125G2254G1437G5100G80G599G2192G1135G2532G3778G599G815G2443G846G80G2983G1135G2532G1817G4690G846G80
29Once there were seven brothers; the oldest got married and died without having children.G2258G3767G2033G80G2532G4413G2983G1135G599G815
30Then the second one married the woman,G2532G1208G2983G1135G2532G3778G599G815
31and then the third. The same thing happened to all seven - -they died without having children.G2532G5154G2983G846G1161G5615G2033G2532G2641G3756G5043G2532G599
32Last of all, the woman died.G1161G5305G3956G1135G599G2532
33Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All seven of them had married her."G3767G1722G386G5101G1135G846G1096G1063G2033G2192G846G1135
34Jesus answered them, "The men and women of this age marry,G2532G2424G611G2036G846G5207G5127G165G1060G2532G1548
35but the men and women who are worthy to rise from death and live in the age to come will not then marry.G1161G2661G5177G1565G165G2532G386G1537G3498G3777G1060G3777G1548
36They will be like angels and cannot die. They are the children of God, because they have risen from death.G3777G1063G1410G599G2089G1063G1526G2465G2532G1526G5207G2316G5607G5207G386
37And Moses clearly proves that the dead are raised to life. In the passage about the burning bush he speaks of the Lord as 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'G1161G3754G3498G1453G2532G3475G3377G1909G942G5613G3004G2962G2316G11G2532G2316G2464G2532G2316G2384
38He is the God of the living, not of the dead, for to him all are alive."G1161G2076G3756G2316G3498G235G2198G1063G3956G2198G846
39Some of the teachers of the Law spoke up, "A good answer, Teacher!"G1161G5100G1122G611G2036G1320G2573G2036
40For they did not dare ask him any more questions.G1161G3765G5111G3765G1905G846G3762

The Question about the Messiah

41Jesus asked them, "How can it be said that the Messiah will be the descendant of David?G1161G2036G4314G846G4459G3004G5547G1511G1138G5207
42For David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right sideG2532G1138G846G3004G1722G976G5568G2962G2036G3450G2962G2521G1537G3450G1188
43until I put your enemies as a footstool under your feet.'G2193G302G5087G4675G2190G4675G4228G5286
44David called him 'Lord'; how, then, can the Messiah be David's descendant?"G1138G3767G2564G846G2962G4459G2076G2532G846G5207

Jesus Warns against the Teachers of the Law

45As all the people listened to him, Jesus said to his disciples,G1161G191G3956G2992G2036G846G3101
46"Be on your guard against the teachers of the Law, who like to walk around in their long robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplace; who choose the reserved seats in the synagogues and the best places at feasts;G4337G575G1122G3588G2309G4043G1722G4749G2532G5368G783G1722G58G2532G4410G1722G4864G2532G4411G1722G1173
47who take advantage of widows and rob them of their homes, and then make a show of saying long prayers! Their punishment will be all the worse!"G3739G2719G5503G3614G2532G4392G4336G3117G4336G3778G2983G4055G2917
