The Temptation of Jesus

4Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit into the desert,G1161G2424G4134G40G4151G5290G575G2446G2532G71G1722G4151G1519G2048
2where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. In all that time he ate nothing, so that he was hungry when it was over.G3985G5062G2250G3985G5259G1228G2532G1722G1565G2250G5315G3756G3762G2532G846G4931G5305G3983
3The Devil said to him, "If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn into bread."G2532G1228G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G2036G5129G3037G2443G1096G740
4But Jesus answered, "The scripture says, 'Human beings cannot live on bread alone.' "G2532G2424G611G4314G846G3004G1125G3754G444G2198G3756G2198G1909G740G3441G235G1909G3956G4487G2316
5Then the Devil took him up and showed him in a second all the kingdoms of the world.G2532G1228G321G846G321G1519G5308G3735G1166G846G3956G932G3625G1722G4743G5550
6"I will give you all this power and all this wealth," the Devil told him. "It has all been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I choose.G2532G1228G2036G846G537G5026G1849G1325G4671G2532G1391G846G3754G3860G1698G2532G3739G1437G2309G1325G846
7All this will be yours, then, if you worship me."G1437G4771G3767G4352G1799G3450G3956G2071G4675
8Jesus answered, "The scripture says, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!' "G2532G2424G611G2036G846G5217G3694G3450G4567G1063G1125G4352G2962G4675G2316G2532G846G3441G3000
9Then the Devil took him to Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the Temple, and said to him, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here.G2532G71G846G1519G2419G2532G2476G846G1909G4419G2411G2532G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G906G4572G2736G1782
10For the scripture says, 'God will order his angels to take good care of you.'G1063G3754G1125G1781G846G32G1781G4012G4675G1314G4571
11It also says, 'They will hold you up with their hands so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.' "G2532G3754G1909G5495G142G4571G142G3379G4350G4675G4228G4314G3037
12But Jesus answered, "The scripture says, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' "G2532G2424G611G2036G846G3754G2046G1598G3756G1598G2962G4675G2316
13When the Devil finished tempting Jesus in every way, he left him for a while.G2532G1228G4931G3956G3986G868G575G846G891G2540

Jesus Begins His Work in Galilee

14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory.G2532G2424G5290G1722G1411G4151G1519G1056G2532G1831G5345G4012G846G2596G3650G4066
15He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone.G2532G846G1321G1722G846G4864G1392G5259G3956

Jesus Is Rejected at Nazareth

16Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the ScripturesG2532G2064G1519G3478G3757G2258G5142G2532G2596G846G1486G2596G1525G1519G4864G1722G4521G2250G2532G450G314
17and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written,G2532G1929G846G975G4396G2268G2532G380G975G2147G5117G3757G2258G1125
18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressedG4151G2962G1909G1691G1752G5548G3165G2097G4434G649G3165G2390G4937G2588G2784G859G164G2532G309G5185G649G1722G859G2352
19and announce that the time has come when the Lord will save his people."G2784G1184G1763G2962
20Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him,G2532G4428G975G591G5257G2523G2532G3788G3956G2258G1722G4864G816G846
21as he said to them, "This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read."G1161G756G3004G4314G846G3754G4594G4137G3778G1124G4137G1722G5216G3775
22They were all well impressed with him and marveled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, "Isn't he the son of Joseph?"G2532G3956G3140G846G3140G2532G2296G1909G5485G3056G3588G1607G1537G846G4750G2532G3004G2076G3756G3778G2501G5207
23He said to them, "I am sure that you will quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, heal yourself.' You will also tell me to do here in my hometown the same things you heard were done in Capernaum.G2532G2036G4314G846G2046G3843G2046G3427G5026G3850G2395G2323G4572G3745G191G1096G1722G2584G4160G2532G5602G1722G4675G3968
24I tell you this," Jesus added, "prophets are never welcomed in their hometown.G1161G2036G281G3004G5213G3754G3762G4396G2076G1184G1722G846G3968
25Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for three and a half years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land.G1161G3004G5213G1909G225G4183G5503G2258G1722G2474G1722G2250G2243G3753G3772G2808G1909G5140G2094G2532G1803G3376G5613G3173G3042G1096G1909G3956G1093
26Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon.G2532G4314G3762G846G3992G2243G3992G1508G1519G4558G4605G4314G1135G5503
27And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian."G2532G4183G3015G2258G1722G2474G1909G1666G4396G2532G3762G846G2511G1508G3497G4948
28When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were filled with anger.G2532G3956G1722G4864G191G5023G4130G2372
29They rose up, dragged Jesus out of town, and took him to the top of the hill on which their town was built. They meant to throw him over the cliff,G2532G450G1544G846G1854G4172G2532G71G846G2193G3790G3735G1909G3739G846G4172G3618G1519G2630G846G2630
30but he walked through the middle of the crowd and went his way.G1161G846G1330G1223G3319G846G4198

A Man with an Evil Spirit

31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where he taught the people on the Sabbath.G2532G2718G1519G2584G4172G1056G2532G1321G846G2258G1722G4521
32They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority.G2532G1605G1909G846G1322G3754G846G3056G2258G1722G1849
33In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice,G2532G1722G4864G2258G444G2192G4151G169G1140G2532G349G3173G5456
34"Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are: you are God's holy messenger!"G3004G1436G5101G2254G4671G2532G2424G3479G2064G622G2248G1492G4571G5101G1488G40G2316
35Jesus ordered the spirit, "Be quiet and come out of the man!" The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm.G2532G2424G2008G846G3004G5392G2532G1831G1537G846G2532G1140G4496G846G1519G3319G1831G575G846G984G846G3367
36The people were all amazed and said to one another, "What kind of words are these? With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out!"G2532G1096G1909G3956G2285G2532G4814G4314G240G3004G5101G3056G3778G3754G1722G1849G2532G1411G2004G169G4151G2532G1831
37And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region.G2532G2279G4012G846G1607G1519G3956G5117G4066

Jesus Heals Many People

38Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's home. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her.G1161G450G1537G4864G1525G1519G4613G3614G1161G4613G3994G2258G4912G3173G4446G2532G2065G846G4012G846
39He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them.G2532G2186G1883G846G2008G4446G2532G863G846G3916G450G1161G1247G846
40After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all.G1161G2246G1416G3956G3745G2192G770G4164G3554G71G846G4314G846G1161G2007G5495G2007G1538G1520G846G2323G846
41Demons also went out from many people, screaming, "You are the Son of God!" Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.G1161G1140G2532G1831G575G4183G2896G2532G3004G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G2532G2008G1439G846G3756G2980G3754G1492G846G1511G5547

Jesus Preaches in the Synagogues

42At daybreak Jesus left the town and went off to a lonely place. The people started looking for him, and when they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving.G1161G1096G2250G1831G4198G1519G2048G5117G2532G3793G2212G846G2532G2064G2193G846G2532G2722G846G3361G4198G575G846
43But he said to them, "I must preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other towns also, because that is what God sent me to do."G1161G2036G4314G846G3754G3165G1163G2097G932G2316G2087G4172G2532G3754G1519G5124G649
44So he preached in the synagogues throughout the country.G2532G2258G2784G1722G4864G1056
