The Message Help

Tested by the Devil

4Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wild.G1161G2424G4134G40G4151G5290G575G2446G2532G71G1722G4151G1519G2048 2For forty wilderness days and nights he was tested by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when the time was up he was hungry.G3985G5062G2250G3985G5259G1228G2532G1722G1565G2250G5315G3756G3762G2532G846G4931G5305G3983 3The Devil, playing on his hunger, gave the first test: "Since you're God's Son, command this stone to turn into a loaf of bread."G2532G1228G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G2036G5129G3037G2443G1096G740 4Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: "It takes more than bread to really live."G2532G2424G611G4314G846G3004G1125G3754G444G2198G3756G2198G1909G740G3441G235G1909G3956G4487G2316 5For the second test he led him up and spread out all the kingdoms of the earth on display at once.G2532G1228G321G846G321G1519G5308G3735G1166G846G3956G932G3625G1722G4743G5550 6Then the Devil said, "They're yours in all their splendor to serve your pleasure. I'm in charge of them all and can turn them over to whomever I wish.G2532G1228G2036G846G537G5026G1849G1325G4671G2532G1391G846G3754G3860G1698G2532G3739G1437G2309G1325G846 7Worship me and they're yours, the whole works."G1437G4771G3767G4352G1799G3450G3956G2071G4675 8Jesus refused, again backing his refusal with Deuteronomy: "Worship the Lord your God and only the Lord your God. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness."G2532G2424G611G2036G846G5217G3694G3450G4567G1063G1125G4352G2962G4675G2316G2532G846G3441G3000 9For the third test the Devil took him to Jerusalem and put him on top of the Temple. He said, "If you are God's Son, jump.G2532G71G846G1519G2419G2532G2476G846G1909G4419G2411G2532G2036G846G1487G1488G5207G2316G906G4572G2736G1782 10It's written, isn't it, that 'he has placed you in the care of angels to protect you;G1063G3754G1125G1781G846G32G1781G4012G4675G1314G4571 11they will catch you; you won't so much as stub your toe on a stone'?"G2532G3754G1909G5495G142G4571G142G3379G4350G4675G4228G4314G3037 12"Yes," said Jesus, "and it's also written, 'Don't you dare tempt the Lord your God.'"G2532G2424G611G2036G846G3754G2046G1598G3756G1598G2962G4675G2316 13That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity.G2532G1228G4931G3956G3986G868G575G846G891G2540

To Set the Burdened Free

14Jesus returned to Galilee powerful in the Spirit. News that he was back spread through the countryside.G2532G2424G5290G1722G1411G4151G1519G1056G2532G1831G5345G4012G846G2596G3650G4066 15He taught in their meeting places to everyone's acclaim and pleasure.G2532G846G1321G1722G846G4864G1392G5259G3956 16He came to Nazareth where he had been reared. As he always did on the Sabbath, he went to the meeting place. When he stood up to read,G2532G2064G1519G3478G3757G2258G5142G2532G2596G846G1486G2596G1525G1519G4864G1722G4521G2250G2532G450G314 17he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,G2532G1929G846G975G4396G2268G2532G380G975G2147G5117G3757G2258G1125 18God's Spirit is on me; he's chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor, Sent me to announce pardon to prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, To set the burdened and battered free,G4151G2962G1909G1691G1752G5548G3165G2097G4434G649G3165G2390G4937G2588G2784G859G164G2532G309G5185G649G1722G859G2352 19to announce, "This is God's year to act!"G2784G1184G1763G2962 20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the place was on him, intent.G2532G4428G975G591G5257G2523G2532G3788G3956G2258G1722G4864G816G846 21Then he started in, "You've just heard Scripture make history. It came true just now in this place."G1161G756G3004G4314G846G3754G4594G4137G3778G1124G4137G1722G5216G3775 22All who were there, watching and listening, were surprised at how well he spoke. But they also said, "Isn't this Joseph's son, the one we've known since he was a youngster?"G2532G3956G3140G846G3140G2532G2296G1909G5485G3056G3588G1607G1537G846G4750G2532G3004G2076G3756G3778G2501G5207 23He answered, "I suppose you're going to quote the proverb, 'Doctor, go heal yourself. Do here in your hometown what we heard you did in Capernaum.'G2532G2036G4314G846G2046G3843G2046G3427G5026G3850G2395G2323G4572G3745G191G1096G1722G2584G4160G2532G5602G1722G4675G3968 24Well, let me tell you something: No prophet is ever welcomed in his hometown.G1161G2036G281G3004G5213G3754G3762G4396G2076G1184G1722G846G3968 25Isn't it a fact that there were many widows in Israel at the time of Elijah during that three and a half years of drought when famine devastated the land,G1161G3004G5213G1909G225G4183G5503G2258G1722G2474G1722G2250G2243G3753G3772G2808G1909G5140G2094G2532G1803G3376G5613G3173G3042G1096G1909G3956G1093 26but the only widow to whom Elijah was sent was in Sarepta in Sidon?G2532G4314G3762G846G3992G2243G3992G1508G1519G4558G4605G4314G1135G5503 27And there were many lepers in Israel at the time of the prophet Elisha but the only one cleansed was Naaman the Syrian."G2532G4183G3015G2258G1722G2474G1909G1666G4396G2532G3762G846G2511G1508G3497G4948 28That set everyone in the meeting place seething with anger.G2532G3956G1722G4864G191G5023G4130G2372 29They threw him out, banishing him from the village, then took him to a mountain cliff at the edge of the village to throw him to his doom,G2532G450G1544G846G1854G4172G2532G71G846G2193G3790G3735G1909G3739G846G4172G3618G1519G2630G846G2630 30but he gave them the slip and was on his way.G1161G846G1330G1223G3319G846G4198 31He went down to Capernaum, a village in Galilee. He was teaching the people on the Sabbath.G2532G2718G1519G2584G4172G1056G2532G1321G846G2258G1722G4521 32They were surprised and impressed—his teaching was so forthright, so confident, so authoritative, not the quibbling and quoting they were used to.G2532G1605G1909G846G1322G3754G846G3056G2258G1722G1849 33In the meeting place that day there was a man demonically disturbed. He screamed,G2532G1722G4864G2258G444G2192G4151G169G1140G2532G349G3173G5456 34"Ho! What business do you have here with us, Jesus? Nazarene! I know what you're up to. You're the Holy One of God and you've come to destroy us!"G3004G1436G5101G2254G4671G2532G2424G3479G2064G622G2248G1492G4571G5101G1488G40G2316 35Jesus shut him up: "Quiet! Get out of him!" The demonic spirit threw the man down in front of them all and left. The demon didn't hurt him.G2532G2424G2008G846G3004G5392G2532G1831G1537G846G2532G1140G4496G846G1519G3319G1831G575G846G984G846G3367 36That set everyone back on their heels, whispering and wondering, "What's going on here? Someone whose words make things happen? Someone who orders demonic spirits to get out and they go?"G2532G1096G1909G3956G2285G2532G4814G4314G240G3004G5101G3056G3778G3754G1722G1849G2532G1411G2004G169G4151G2532G1831 37Jesus was the talk of the town.G2532G2279G4012G846G1607G1519G3956G5117G4066

He Healed Them All

38He left the meeting place and went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was running a high fever and they asked him to do something for her.G1161G450G1537G4864G1525G1519G4613G3614G1161G4613G3994G2258G4912G3173G4446G2532G2065G846G4012G846 39He stood over her, told the fever to leave—and it left. Before they knew it, she was up getting dinner for them.G2532G2186G1883G846G2008G4446G2532G863G846G3916G450G1161G1247G846 40When the sun went down, everyone who had anyone sick with some ailment or other brought them to him. One by one he placed his hands on them and healed them.G1161G2246G1416G3956G3745G2192G770G4164G3554G71G846G4314G846G1161G2007G5495G2007G1538G1520G846G2323G846 41Demons left in droves, screaming, "Son of God! You're the Son of God!" But he shut them up, refusing to let them speak because they knew too much, knew him to be the Messiah.G1161G1140G2532G1831G575G4183G2896G2532G3004G3754G4771G1488G5547G5207G2316G2532G2008G1439G846G3756G2980G3754G1492G846G1511G5547 42He left the next day for open country. But the crowds went looking and, when they found him, clung to him so he couldn't go on.G1161G1096G2250G1831G4198G1519G2048G5117G2532G3793G2212G846G2532G2064G2193G846G2532G2722G846G3361G4198G575G846 43He told them, "Don't you realize that there are yet other villages where I have to tell the Message of God's kingdom, that this is the work God sent me to do?"G1161G2036G4314G846G3754G3165G1163G2097G932G2316G2087G4172G2532G3754G1519G5124G649 44Meanwhile he continued preaching in the meeting places of Galilee.G2532G2258G2784G1722G4864G1056
