6Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples.G2532G1831G1564G2532G2064G1519G846G3968G2532G846G3101G190G846 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?G2532G4521G1096G756G1321G1722G4864G2532G4183G191G1605G3004G4159G5129G5023G2532G5101G4678G1325G846G3754G2532G5108G1411G1096G1223G846G5495 3Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.G2076G3756G3778G5045G5207G3137G1161G80G2385G2532G2500G2532G2455G2532G4613G2532G1526G3756G846G79G5602G4314G2248G2532G4624G1722G846 4Jesus said to them, "Only in their own towns, among their relatives and in their own homes are prophets without honor."G1161G2424G3004G846G3754G4396G2076G3756G820G1508G1722G846G3968G2532G1722G4773G2532G1722G846G3614 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them.G2532G3756G1410G1563G4160G3762G1411G1508G2007G5495G3641G732G2323 6He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.G2532G2296G1223G846G570G2532G4013G2945G2968G1321 7Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.G2532G4341G1427G2532G756G649G846G649G1417G1417G2532G1325G846G1849G169G4151 8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.G2532G3853G846G2443G142G3367G1519G3598G1508G4464G3440G3361G4082G3361G740G3361G5475G1519G2223 9Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.G235G5265G4547G2532G3361G1746G1746G1417G5509 10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.G2532G3004G846G3699G1437G1525G1519G3614G1563G3306G2193G302G1831G1564 11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."G2532G3745G302G1209G3361G1209G5209G3366G191G5216G1607G1564G1621G5522G5270G5216G4228G1519G3142G846G281G3004G5213G2071G414G4670G2228G1116G1722G2250G2920G2228G1565G4172 12They went out and preached that people should repent.G2532G1831G2784G2443G3340 13They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.G2532G1544G4183G1140G2532G218G1637G4183G732G2532G2323 14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."G2532G935G2264G191G1063G846G3686G1096G5318G2532G3004G3754G2491G907G1453G1537G3498G2532G1223G5124G1411G1754G1722G846 15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago."G243G3004G3754G2076G2243G1161G243G3004G3754G2076G4396G2228G5613G1520G4396 16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!"G1161G2264G191G2036G3778G2076G2491G3754G3739G1473G607G846G1453G1537G3498 17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married.G1063G2264G846G649G2902G2491G2532G1210G846G1722G5438G1223G2266G1223G846G80G5376G1135G3754G1060G846 18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."G1063G2491G3004G2264G3754G1832G3756G1832G4671G2192G4675G80G1135 19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to,G1161G2266G1758G846G2532G2309G615G846G2532G1410G3756 20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled ; yet he liked to listen to him.G1063G2264G5399G2491G1492G846G1342G435G2532G40G2532G4933G846G2532G191G846G4160G4183G2532G191G846G2234 21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.G2532G2121G2250G1096G3753G2264G846G1077G4160G1173G846G3175G2532G5506G2532G4413G1056 22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you."G2532G2364G846G2266G1525G2532G3738G2532G700G2264G2532G4873G935G2036G2877G154G3165G3739G1437G2309G2532G1325G4671 23And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom."G2532G3660G846G3754G3739G1437G154G3165G1325G4671G2193G2255G3450G932 24She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered.G1161G1831G2036G846G3384G5101G154G1161G2036G2776G2491G910 25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."G2532G1525G2112G3326G4710G4314G935G154G3004G2309G2443G1325G3427G1824G1909G4094G2776G2491G910 26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her.G2532G935G1096G4036G1223G3727G2532G3588G4873G2309G3756G114G846 27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,G2532G2112G935G649G4688G2004G846G2776G5342G1161G565G607G846G1722G5438 28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.G2532G5342G846G2776G1909G4094G2532G1325G846G2877G2532G2877G1325G846G846G3384 29On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.G2532G846G3101G191G2064G2532G142G846G4430G2532G5087G846G1722G3419 30The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.G2532G652G4863G4314G2424G2532G518G846G3956G2532G3745G4160G2532G3745G1321 31Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."G2532G2036G846G1205G5210G846G2596G2398G1519G2048G5117G2532G373G3641G1063G2258G4183G2064G2532G5217G2532G3761G2119G3761G5315 32So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.G2532G565G1519G2048G5117G4143G2596G2398 33But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them.G2532G3793G1492G846G5217G2532G4183G1921G846G2532G4936G3979G1563G575G3956G4172G2532G4281G846G2532G4905G4314G846 34When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.G2532G2424G1831G1492G4183G3793G2532G4697G1909G846G3754G2258G5613G4263G3361G2192G4166G2532G756G1321G846G4183 35By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. "This is a remote place," they said, "and it's already very late.G2532G5610G1096G2235G4183G846G3101G4334G846G3004G3754G2076G2048G5117G2532G2235G5610G4183 36Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."G630G846G630G2443G565G1519G68G2945G2532G2968G59G1438G740G1063G2192G5101G3756G5315 37But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take almost a year's wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?"G611G1161G2036G846G1325G5210G846G5315G2532G3004G846G565G59G1250G1220G740G2532G1325G846G5315 38"How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five—and two fish."G1161G3004G846G4214G740G2192G5217G2532G1492G2532G1097G3004G4002G2532G1417G2486 39Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.G2532G2004G846G347G3956G347G4849G4849G1909G5515G5528 40So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.G2532G377G4237G4237G303G1540G2532G303G4004 41Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.G2532G2983G4002G740G2532G1417G2486G308G1519G3772G2127G2532G2622G740G2532G1325G846G3101G2443G3908G846G2532G1417G2486G3307G3956 42They all ate and were satisfied,G2532G5315G3956G5315G2532G5526 43and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.G2532G142G1427G2894G4134G2801G2532G575G2486 44The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.G2532G5315G740G2258G5616G4000G435 45Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.G2532G2112G315G846G3101G1684G1519G4143G2532G4254G1519G4008G4254G4314G966G2193G846G630G3793 46After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.G2532G657G846G657G565G1519G3735G4336 47When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.G2532G3798G1096G4143G2258G1722G3319G2281G2532G846G3441G1909G1093 48He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,G2532G1492G846G928G1722G1643G1063G417G2258G1727G846G2532G4012G5067G5438G3571G2064G4314G846G4043G1909G2281G2532G2309G3928G846 49but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,G1161G1492G846G4043G1909G2281G1380G1511G5326G2532G349 50because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."G1063G3956G1492G846G2532G5015G2532G2112G2980G3326G846G2532G3004G846G2293G1510G1473G5399G3361G5399 51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,G2532G305G4314G846G1519G4143G2532G417G2869G2532G3029G1839G1722G1438G1537G4053G2532G2296 52for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.G1063G4920G3756G1909G740G1063G846G2588G2258G4456 53When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there.G2532G1276G2064G1909G1093G1082G2532G4358 54As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.G2532G846G1831G1537G4143G2112G1921G846 55They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.G4063G1565G3650G4066G756G4064G1909G2895G2192G2560G3699G191G3754G1563G2076 56And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.G2532G3699G302G1531G1519G2968G2228G4172G2228G68G5087G770G1722G58G2532G3870G846G2443G680G2579G2579G2899G846G2440G2532G3745G302G680G846G4982
