Just a Carpenter

6He left there and returned to his hometown. His disciples came along.G2532G1831G1564G2532G2064G1519G846G3968G2532G846G3101G190G846 2On the Sabbath, he gave a lecture in the meeting place. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. "We had no idea he was this good!" they said. "How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?"G2532G4521G1096G756G1321G1722G4864G2532G4183G191G1605G3004G4159G5129G5023G2532G5101G4678G1325G846G3754G2532G5108G1411G1096G1223G846G5495 3But in the next breath they were cutting him down: "He's just a carpenter—Mary's boy. We've known him since he was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does he think he is?" They tripped over what little they knew about him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further.G2076G3756G3778G5045G5207G3137G1161G80G2385G2532G2500G2532G2455G2532G4613G2532G1526G3756G846G79G5602G4314G2248G2532G4624G1722G846 4Jesus told them, "A prophet has little honor in his hometown, among his relatives, on the streets he played in as a child."G1161G2424G3004G846G3754G4396G2076G3756G820G1508G1722G846G3968G2532G1722G4773G2532G1722G846G3614 5Jesus wasn't able to do much of anything there—he laid hands on a few sick people and healed them, that's all.G2532G3756G1410G1563G4160G3762G1411G1508G2007G5495G3641G732G2323 6He couldn't get over their stubbornness. He left and made a circuit of the other villages, teaching.G2532G2296G1223G846G570G2532G4013G2945G2968G1321

The Twelve

7Jesus called the Twelve to him, and sent them out in pairs. He gave them authority and power to deal with the evil opposition.G2532G4341G1427G2532G756G649G846G649G1417G1417G2532G1325G846G1849G169G4151 8He sent them off with these instructions: "Don't think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. No special appeals for funds. Keep it simple.G2532G3853G846G2443G142G3367G1519G3598G1508G4464G3440G3361G4082G3361G740G3361G5475G1519G2223 9(SEE 6:8)G235G5265G4547G2532G3361G1746G1746G1417G5509 10"And no luxury inns. Get a modest place and be content there until you leave.G2532G3004G846G3699G1437G1525G1519G3614G1563G3306G2193G302G1831G1564 11"If you're not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don't make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way."G2532G3745G302G1209G3361G1209G5209G3366G191G5216G1607G1564G1621G5522G5270G5216G4228G1519G3142G846G281G3004G5213G2071G414G4670G2228G1116G1722G2250G2920G2228G1565G4172 12Then they were on the road. They preached with joyful urgency that life can be radically different;G2532G1831G2784G2443G3340 13right and left they sent the demons packing; they brought wellness to the sick, anointing their bodies, healing their spirits.G2532G1544G4183G1140G2532G218G1637G4183G732G2532G2323

The Death of John

14King Herod heard of all this, for by this time the name of Jesus was on everyone's lips. He said, "This has to be John the Baptizer come back from the dead—that's why he's able to work miracles!"G2532G935G2264G191G1063G846G3686G1096G5318G2532G3004G3754G2491G907G1453G1537G3498G2532G1223G5124G1411G1754G1722G846 15Others said, "No, it's Elijah." Others said, "He's a prophet, just like one of the old-time prophets."G243G3004G3754G2076G2243G1161G243G3004G3754G2076G4396G2228G5613G1520G4396 16But Herod wouldn't budge: "It's John, sure enough. I cut off his head, and now he's back, alive."G1161G2264G191G2036G3778G2076G2491G3754G3739G1473G607G846G1453G1537G3498 17Herod was the one who had ordered the arrest of John, put him in chains, and sent him to prison at the nagging of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.G1063G2264G846G649G2902G2491G2532G1210G846G1722G5438G1223G2266G1223G846G80G5376G1135G3754G1060G846 18For John had provoked Herod by naming his relationship with Herodias "adultery."G1063G2491G3004G2264G3754G1832G3756G1832G4671G2192G4675G80G1135 19Herodias, smoldering with hate, wanted to kill him, but didn't dareG1161G2266G1758G846G2532G2309G615G846G2532G1410G3756 20because Herod was in awe of John. Convinced that he was a holy man, he gave him special treatment. Whenever he listened to him he was miserable with guilt—and yet he couldn't stay away. Something in John kept pulling him back.G1063G2264G5399G2491G1492G846G1342G435G2532G40G2532G4933G846G2532G191G846G4160G4183G2532G191G846G2234 21But a portentous day arrived when Herod threw a birthday party, inviting all the brass and bluebloods in Galilee.G2532G2121G2250G1096G3753G2264G846G1077G4160G1173G846G3175G2532G5506G2532G4413G1056 22Herodias's daughter entered the banquet hall and danced for the guests. She dazzled Herod and the guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask me anything. I'll give you anything you want."G2532G2364G846G2266G1525G2532G3738G2532G700G2264G2532G4873G935G2036G2877G154G3165G3739G1437G2309G2532G1325G4671 23Carried away, he kept on, "I swear, I'll split my kingdom with you if you say so!"G2532G3660G846G3754G3739G1437G154G3165G1325G4671G2193G2255G3450G932 24She went back to her mother and said, "What should I ask for?" "Ask for the head of John the Baptizer."G1161G1831G2036G846G3384G5101G154G1161G2036G2776G2491G910 25Excited, she ran back to the king and said, "I want the head of John the Baptizer served up on a platter. And I want it now!"G2532G1525G2112G3326G4710G4314G935G154G3004G2309G2443G1325G3427G1824G1909G4094G2776G2491G910 26That sobered the king up fast. But unwilling to lose face with his guests, he caved in and let her have her wish.G2532G935G1096G4036G1223G3727G2532G3588G4873G2309G3756G114G846 27The king sent the executioner off to the prison with orders to bring back John's head. He went, cut off John's head,G2532G2112G935G649G4688G2004G846G2776G5342G1161G565G607G846G1722G5438 28brought it back on a platter, and presented it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.G2532G5342G846G2776G1909G4094G2532G1325G846G2877G2532G2877G1325G846G846G3384 29When John's disciples heard about this, they came and got the body and gave it a decent burial.G2532G846G3101G191G2064G2532G142G846G4430G2532G5087G846G1722G3419

Supper for Five Thousand

30The apostles then rendezvoused with Jesus and reported on all that they had done and taught.G2532G652G4863G4314G2424G2532G518G846G3956G2532G3745G4160G2532G3745G1321 31Jesus said, "Come off by yourselves; let's take a break and get a little rest." For there was constant coming and going. They didn't even have time to eat.G2532G2036G846G1205G5210G846G2596G2398G1519G2048G5117G2532G373G3641G1063G2258G4183G2064G2532G5217G2532G3761G2119G3761G5315 32So they got in the boat and went off to a remote place by themselves.G2532G565G1519G2048G5117G4143G2596G2398 33Someone saw them going and the word got around. From the surrounding towns people went out on foot, running, and got there ahead of them.G2532G3793G1492G846G5217G2532G4183G1921G846G2532G4936G3979G1563G575G3956G4172G2532G4281G846G2532G4905G4314G846 34When Jesus arrived, he saw this huge crowd. At the sight of them, his heart broke—like sheep with no shepherd they were. He went right to work teaching them.G2532G2424G1831G1492G4183G3793G2532G4697G1909G846G3754G2258G5613G4263G3361G2192G4166G2532G756G1321G846G4183 35When his disciples thought this had gone on long enough—it was now quite late in the day—they interrupted: "We are a long way out in the country, and it's very late.G2532G5610G1096G2235G4183G846G3101G4334G846G3004G3754G2076G2048G5117G2532G2235G5610G4183 36Pronounce a benediction and send these folks off so they can get some supper."G630G846G630G2443G565G1519G68G2945G2532G2968G59G1438G740G1063G2192G5101G3756G5315 37Jesus said, "You do it. Fix supper for them." They replied, "Are you serious? You want us to go spend a fortune on food for their supper?"G611G1161G2036G846G1325G5210G846G5315G2532G3004G846G565G59G1250G1220G740G2532G1325G846G5315 38But he was quite serious. "How many loaves of bread do you have? Take an inventory." That didn't take long. "Five," they said, "plus two fish."G1161G3004G846G4214G740G2192G5217G2532G1492G2532G1097G3004G4002G2532G1417G2486 39Jesus got them all to sit down in groups of fifty or a hundred—they looked like a patchwork quilt of wildflowers spread out on the green grass!G2532G2004G846G347G3956G347G4849G4849G1909G5515G5528 40(SEE 6:39)G2532G377G4237G4237G303G1540G2532G303G4004 41He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples in turn gave it to the people. He did the same with the fish.G2532G2983G4002G740G2532G1417G2486G308G1519G3772G2127G2532G2622G740G2532G1325G846G3101G2443G3908G846G2532G1417G2486G3307G3956 42They all ate their fill.G2532G5315G3956G5315G2532G5526 43The disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers.G2532G142G1427G2894G4134G2801G2532G575G2486 44More than five thousand were at the supper.G2532G5315G740G2258G5616G4000G435

Walking on the Sea

45As soon as the meal was finished, Jesus insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead across to Bethsaida while he dismissed the congregation.G2532G2112G315G846G3101G1684G1519G4143G2532G4254G1519G4008G4254G4314G966G2193G846G630G3793 46After sending them off, he climbed a mountain to pray.G2532G657G846G657G565G1519G3735G4336 47Late at night, the boat was far out at sea; Jesus was still by himself on land.G2532G3798G1096G4143G2258G1722G3319G2281G2532G846G3441G1909G1093 48He could see his men struggling with the oars, the wind having come up against them. At about four o'clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea. He intended to go right by them.G2532G1492G846G928G1722G1643G1063G417G2258G1727G846G2532G4012G5067G5438G3571G2064G4314G846G4043G1909G2281G2532G2309G3928G846 49But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed, scared out of their wits.G1161G1492G846G4043G1909G2281G1380G1511G5326G2532G349 50Jesus was quick to comfort them: "Courage! It's me. Don't be afraid."G1063G3956G1492G846G2532G5015G2532G2112G2980G3326G846G2532G3004G846G2293G1510G1473G5399G3361G5399 51As soon as he climbed into the boat, the wind died down. They were stunned, shaking their heads, wondering what was going on.G2532G305G4314G846G1519G4143G2532G417G2869G2532G3029G1839G1722G1438G1537G4053G2532G2296 52They didn't understand what he had done at the supper. None of this had yet penetrated their hearts.G1063G4920G3756G1909G740G1063G846G2588G2258G4456 53They beached the boat at Gennesaret and tied up at the landing.G2532G1276G2064G1909G1093G1082G2532G4358 54As soon as they got out of the boat, word got around fast.G2532G846G1831G1537G4143G2112G1921G846 55People ran this way and that, bringing their sick on stretchers to where they heard he was.G4063G1565G3650G4066G756G4064G1909G2895G2192G2560G3699G191G3754G1563G2076 56Wherever he went, village or town or country crossroads, they brought their sick to the marketplace and begged him to let them touch the edge of his coat—that's all. And whoever touched him became well.G2532G3699G302G1531G1519G2968G2228G4172G2228G68G5087G770G1722G58G2532G3870G846G2443G680G2579G2579G2899G846G2440G2532G3745G302G680G846G4982
