Transjordan Settlements

32The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a [good] one for livestock.H1121H7205H1121H1410H3966H6099H7227H4735H7200H776H3270H776H1568H4725H4725H4735
2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community and said:H1121H1410H1121H7205H935H559H4872H499H3548H5387H5712H559
3"[The territory of] Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,H5852H1769H3270H5247H2809H500H7643H5015H1194
4which the LORD struck down before the community of Israel, is [good] land for livestock, and your servants own livestock."H776H3068H5221H6440H5712H3478H776H4735H5650H4735
5They said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don't make us cross the Jordan."H559H4672H2580H5869H776H5414H5650H272H5674H3383
6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?H4872H559H1121H1410H1121H7205H251H935H4421H3427
7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the LORD has given them?H5106H5106H3820H1121H3478H5674H776H3068H5414
8That's what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.H6213H1H7971H6947H7200H776
9After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.H5927H5158H812H7200H776H5106H3820H1121H3478H935H776H3068H5414
10So the Lord's anger burned that day, and He swore an oath:H3068H639H2734H3117H7650H559
11'Because they did not follow Me completely, none of the men 20 years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore [to give] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—H518H582H5927H4714H6242H8141H1121H4605H7200H127H7650H85H3327H3290H4390H310
12none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did follow the LORD completely.'H3612H1121H3312H7074H3091H1121H5126H4390H310H3068
13The Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness 40 years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD's sight was gone.H3068H639H2734H3478H5128H4057H705H8141H1755H6213H7451H5869H3068H8552
14And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your fathers' place adding even more to the LORD's burning anger against Israel.H6965H1H8635H2400H582H5595H2740H639H3068H3478
15If you turn back from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them."H7725H310H3254H3240H4057H7843H5971
16Then they approached him and said, "We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our dependents.H5066H559H1129H1448H6629H4735H5892H2945
17But we will arm ourselves and be ready [to go] ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.H587H2363H2502H6440H1121H3478H935H4725H2945H3427H4013H5892H6440H3427H776
18We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has taken possession of his inheritance.H7725H1004H1121H3478H5157H376H5159
19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance will be across the Jordan to the east."H5157H5676H3383H1973H5159H935H5676H3383H4217
20Moses replied to them, "If you do this— if you arm yourselves for battle before the Lord,H4872H559H6213H1697H2502H6440H3068H4421
21and every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven His enemies from His presence,H5674H2502H5674H3383H6440H3068H3423H341H6440
22and the land is subdued before the LORD— afterwards you may return and be free from obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.H776H3533H6440H3068H310H7725H5355H3068H3478H776H272H6440H3068
23But if you don't do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD; be sure your sin will catch up with you.H6213H2398H3068H3045H2403H4672
24Build cities for your dependents and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised."H1129H5892H2945H1448H6792H6213H3318H6310
25The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands.H1121H1410H1121H7205H559H4872H559H5650H6213H113H6680
26Our little children, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead,H2945H802H4735H929H5892H1568
27but your servants are equipped for war before the LORD and will go across to the battle as my lord orders."H5650H5674H2502H6635H6440H3068H4421H113H1696
28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the family leaders of the Israelite tribes.H4872H6680H499H3548H3091H1121H5126H7218H1H4294H1121H3478
29Moses told them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.H4872H559H1121H1410H1121H7205H5674H3383H2502H4421H6440H3068H776H3533H6440H5414H776H1568H272
30But if they don't go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you."H5674H2502H270H8432H776H3667
31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, "What the LORD has spoken to your servants is what we will do.H1121H1410H1121H7205H6030H559H3068H1696H5650H6213
32We will cross over in battle formation before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but we will keep our hereditary possession across the Jordan."H5168H5674H2502H6440H3068H776H3667H272H5159H5676H3383
33So Moses gave them— the Gadites, Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph— the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land including its cities with the territories surrounding them.H4872H5414H1121H1410H1121H7205H2677H7626H4519H1121H3130H4467H5511H4428H567H4467H5747H4428H1316H776H5892H1367H5892H776H5439
34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,H1121H1410H1129H1769H5852H6177
35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,H5855H3270H3011
36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and [built] sheepfolds.H1039H1028H4013H5892H1448H6629
37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,H1121H7205H1129H2809H500H7156
38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.H5015H1186H8034H4142H7643H7121H8034H8034H5892H1129
39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.H1121H4353H1121H4519H3212H1568H3920H3423H567
40So Moses gave Gilead to [the clan of] Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled in it.H4872H5414H1568H4353H1121H4519H3427
41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages, which he renamed Jair's Villages.H2971H1121H4519H1980H3920H2333H7121H2334
42Nobah went and captured Kenath with its villages and called it Nobah after his own name.H5025H1980H3920H7079H1323H7121H5025H8034
