Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

32Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had an exceedingly large number of livestock. So when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was indeed a place suitable for livestock,H1121H7205H1121H1410H3966H6099H7227H4735H7200H776H3270H776H1568H4725H4725H4735 2the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,H1121H1410H1121H7205H935H559H4872H499H3548H5387H5712H559 3"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,H5852H1769H3270H5247H2809H500H7643H5015H1194 4the land which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock. "H776H3068H5221H6440H5712H3478H776H4735H5650H4735 5And they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession; do not take us across the Jordan."H559H4672H2580H5869H776H5414H5650H272H5674H3383 6But Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, "Shall your brothers go to war while you yourselves sit here?H4872H559H1121H1410H1121H7205H251H935H4421H3427 7"Now why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the LORD has given them?H5106H5106H3820H1121H3478H5674H776H3068H5414 8"This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.H6213H1H7971H6947H7200H776 9"For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them.H5927H5158H812H7200H776H5106H3820H1121H3478H935H776H3068H5414 10"So the Lord's anger burned in that day, and He swore, saying,H3068H639H2734H3117H7650H559 11'None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,H518H582H5927H4714H6242H8141H1121H4605H7200H127H7650H85H3327H3290H4390H310 12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have followed the LORD fully. 'H3612H1121H3312H7074H3091H1121H5126H4390H310H3068 13"So the Lord's anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the LORD was destroyed.H3068H639H2734H3478H5128H4057H705H8141H1755H6213H7451H5869H3068H8552 14"Now behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.H6965H1H8635H2400H582H5595H2740H639H3068H3478 15"For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more abandon them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all these people."H7725H310H3254H3240H4057H7843H5971 16Then they came near to him and said, "We will build here sheepfolds for our livestock and cities for our little ones;H5066H559H1129H1448H6629H4735H5892H2945 17but we ourselves will be armed ready [to go] before the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.H587H2363H2502H6440H1121H3478H935H4725H2945H3427H4013H5892H6440H3427H776 18"We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has possessed his inheritance.H7725H1004H1121H3478H5157H376H5159 19"For we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east."H5157H5676H3383H1973H5159H935H5676H3383H4217 20So Moses said to them, "If you will do this, if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for the war,H4872H559H6213H1697H2502H6440H3068H4421 21and all of you armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven His enemies out from before Him,H5674H2502H5674H3383H6440H3068H3423H341H6440 22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you shall return and be free of obligation toward the LORD and toward Israel, and this land shall be yours for a possession before the LORD.H776H3533H6440H3068H310H7725H5355H3068H3478H776H272H6440H3068 23"But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.H6213H2398H3068H3045H2403H4672 24"Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and sheepfolds for your sheep; and do what you have promised."H1129H5892H2945H1448H6792H6213H3318H6310 25And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, " Your servants will do just as my lord commands.H1121H1410H1121H7205H559H4872H559H5650H6213H113H6680 26"Our little ones, our wives, our livestock and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead;H2945H802H4735H929H5892H1568 27while your servants, everyone who is armed for war, will cross over in the presence of the LORD to battle, just as my lord says. "H5650H5674H2502H6635H6440H3068H4421H113H1696 28So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' [households] of the tribes of the sons of Israel.H4872H6680H499H3548H3091H1121H5126H7218H1H4294H1121H3478 29And Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of the LORD, and the land will be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;H4872H559H1121H1410H1121H7205H5674H3383H2502H4421H6440H3068H776H3533H6440H5414H776H1568H272 30but if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. "H5674H2502H270H8432H776H3667 31And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.H1121H1410H1121H7205H6030H559H3068H1696H5650H6213 32"We ourselves will cross over armed in the presence of the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance [shall remain] with us across the Jordan."H5168H5674H2502H6440H3068H776H3667H272H5159H5676H3383 33So Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the land with its cities with [their] territories, the cities of the surrounding land.H4872H5414H1121H1410H1121H7205H2677H7626H4519H1121H3130H4467H5511H4428H567H4467H5747H4428H1316H776H5892H1367H5892H776H5439 34And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer,H1121H1410H1129H1769H5852H6177 35and Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah,H5855H3270H3011 36and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.H1039H1028H4013H5892H1448H6629 37And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim,H1121H7205H1129H2809H500H7156 38and Nebo and Baal-meon— [their] names being changed— and Sibmah, and they gave [other] names to the cities which they built.H5015H1186H8034H4142H7643H7121H8034H8034H5892H1129 39And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.H1121H4353H1121H4519H3212H1568H3920H3423H567 40So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.H4872H5414H1568H4353H1121H4519H3427 41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth-jair.H2971H1121H4519H1980H3920H2333H7121H2334 42And Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah after his own name.H5025H1980H3920H7079H1323H7121H5025H8034
