The Purpose of Proverbs

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:H4912H8010H1121H1732H4428H3478
For gaining wisdom and being instructed; for understanding insightful sayings;H3045H2451H4148H995H561H998
for receiving wise instruction [in] righteousness, justice, and integrity;H3947H4148H7919H6664H4941H4339
for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man—H5414H6195H6612H5288H1847H4209
a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance—H2450H8085H3254H3948H995H7069H8458
for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles.H995H4912H4426H1697H2450H2420
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.H3374H3068H7225H1847H191H936H2451H4148

Avoid the Path of the Violent

Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching,H1121H8085H4148H1H5203H8451H517
for they will be a garland of grace on your head and a [gold] chain around your neck.H3880H2580H7218H6060H1621
My son, if sinners entice you, don't be persuaded.H1121H2400H6601H14
If they say— "Come with us! Let's set an ambush and kill someone. Let's attack some innocent person just for fun!H559H3212H693H1818H6845H5355H2600
Let's swallow them alive, like Sheol, still healthy as they go down to the Pit.H1104H2416H7585H8549H3381H953
We'll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder.H4672H3368H1952H4390H1004H7998
Throw in your lot with us, and we'll all share our money"—H5307H1486H8432H259H3599
my son, don't travel that road with them or set foot on their path,H1121H3212H1870H4513H7272H5410
because their feet run toward trouble and they hurry to commit murder.H7272H7323H7451H4116H8210H1818
It is foolish to spread a net where any bird can see it,H2600H7568H2219H5869H1167H3671
but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives.H693H1818H6845H5315
Such are the paths of all who pursue gain dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who profit from it.H734H1214H1215H3947H5315H1167

Wisdom’s Plea

Wisdom calls out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares.H2454H7442H2351H5414H6963H7339
She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:H7121H7218H1993H6607H8179H5892H559H561
"How long, foolish ones, will you love ignorance? [How long] will [you] mockers enjoy mocking and [you] fools hate knowledge?H6612H157H6612H3887H2530H3944H3684H8130H1847
If you turn to my discipline, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words.H7725H8433H5042H7307H3045H1697
Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention,H7121H3985H5186H3027H7181
since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction,H6544H6098H14H8433
I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you,H7832H343H3932H6343H935
when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you.H6343H935H7722H7584H343H857H5492H6869H6695H935
Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will search for me, but won't find me.H7121H6030H7836H4672
Because they hated knowledge, didn't choose to fear the LORD,H8130H1847H977H3374H3068
were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction,H14H6098H5006H8433
they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes.H398H6529H1870H7646H4156
For the waywardness of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.H4878H6612H2026H7962H3684H6
But whoever listens to me will live securely and be free from the fear of danger."H8085H7931H983H7599H6343H7451
