The Marriage of Ruth

4Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, the close relative of whom Boaz spoke was passing by, so he said, "Turn aside, friend, sit down here." And he turned aside and sat down.H5927H1162H5927H8179H3427H1350H1162H1696H5674H559H1945H6423H492H5493H3427H5493H3427 2And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, "Sit down here." So they sat down.H3947H6235H582H2205H5892H559H3427H3427 3Then he said to the closest relative, "Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech.H559H1350H5281H7725H7704H4124H4376H2513H7704H251H458 4"So I thought to inform you, saying, 'Buy [it] before those who are sitting [here,] and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem [it,] redeem [it;] but if not, tell me that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem [it,] and I am after you.'" And he said, "I will redeem [it.]"H559H1540H241H559H7069H3427H2205H5971H1350H1350H1350H5046H3045H1350H2108H310H559H1350 5Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance."H559H1162H3117H7069H7704H3027H5281H7069H7327H4125H802H4191H6965H8034H4191H5159 6And the closest relative said, "I cannot redeem [it] for myself, lest I jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem [it] for yourself; you [may have] my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem [it.]"H1350H559H3201H1350H7843H5159H1350H1353H3201H1350 7Now this was [the custom] in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange [of land] to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the [manner of] attestation in Israel.H6440H3478H1353H8545H6965H1697H376H8025H5275H5414H7453H8584H3478 8So the closest relative said to Boaz, "Buy [it] for yourself." And he removed his sandal.H1350H559H1162H7069H8025H5275 9Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, "You are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon.H1162H559H2205H5971H5707H3117H7069H458H3630H4248H3027H5281 10"Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased may not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his [birth] place; you are witnesses today."H7327H4125H802H4248H7069H802H6965H8034H4191H5159H8034H4191H3772H5973H251H8179H4725H5707H3117 11And all the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, "[ We are] witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephrathah and become famous in Bethlehem.H5971H8179H2205H559H5707H3068H5414H802H935H1004H7354H3812H8147H1129H1004H3478H6213H2428H672H7121H8034H1035 12"Moreover, may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring which the LORD shall give you by this young woman."H1004H1004H6557H8559H3205H3063H2233H3068H5414H5291 13So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.H1162H3947H7327H802H935H3068H5414H2032H3205H1121 14Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel.H802H559H5281H1288H3068H7673H3117H1350H8034H7121H3478 15"May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him."H7725H5315H3557H7872H3618H157H2896H7651H1121H3205

The Line of David Began Here

16Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse.H5281H3947H3206H7896H2436H539 17And the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi!" So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.H7934H7121H8034H559H1121H3205H5281H7121H8034H5744H1H3448H1H1732 18Now these are the generations of Perez: to Perez was born Hezron,H8435H6557H6557H3205H2696 19and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab,H2696H3205H7410H7410H3205H5992 20and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon,H5992H3205H5177H5177H3205H8009 21and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed,H8012H3205H1162H1162H3205H5744 22and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.H5744H3205H3448H3448H3205H1732
