Although, it is seem foolish to just commit suicide just because someone rejected your battle plan, he knew that some other plan would not work and it would let David become victor. Knowing that he betrayed David, he would likely die if David had not died in the desert.
Apparently (searched the background) he had a grudge against David (assuming) because he slept with his granddaughter (Bathsheba) and held that grudge until finally he could betray David
23When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
