What is Prayer Tents

Young Adults Hangout

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst.

Our Vision (Picture of what we desire to see)

Make disciples in all nations so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians.

Our Calling (Why we are doing this)

Jesus calls us to make disciples, and we must be one to do so.
Discipleship is living out the Gospel in everyday living while growing in small cohesive group of believers.
Evangelism is making disciples through life-on-life relationships.

Our Mission (How we will get to our vision)

Prayer Tents builds cohesive, growing, empowered small groups who make disciples. Those individuals support their local churches and neighbors around them effectively. Specifically by:

  • Enabling individuals to be live out the Gospel by being a disciple of Jesus. Provide teaching, guidance, and inclusion in discipleship groups to be influential and effective in the public, including the workplace, schools, and communities.
  • Using technology to build accessible websites/apps. Anyone interested in learning about God can connect with Christians nearby and participate in small groups for continued prayer, fellowship, and learning/experience.
  • Providing real estate (locations) resources to enable discipleship groups to meet effectively in various localities and funding missionaries and local disciple-leaders who can guide the growing small groups.

Key Verses

19Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

-Matthew 28:19-20

πορευθέντες οὗν μαθητεύσατε
(poreuthentes oun mathEteusate)
As you are going, make disciples

5In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God's promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 8The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

-2Peter 1:5-8

Why was Prayer Tents started?

Evangelism is something that many of us (and our churches) struggle with today. Evangelism occurs by making disciples, that is, deep, life-on-life relationship building just as Jesus and his disciples did to attract many to God. Prayer Tents seeks to connect Biblical discipleship to modern day culture. The result is life transformation for Christians and "interested" alike.1

Our Values

We firmly believe the three values of Prayer Tents below is what is severely needed in today’s times.

Evangelism is done through Discipleship [life-on-life relationships] (Love)

Evangelism is making disciples (c.f. Matthew 28:19-20). Discipleship refers to life-on-life walking together for the purposes of growth in knowing God more. Unless Christians are disciples themselves, they cannot make disciples.

Power of God is manifest through Power of Prayer (Faith)

There is lack of belief today that God can raise the dead and heal the sick. Many people are looking for a solution, but cannot come to believe that God has the power to transform their circumstances. Faith of Christians must come about so that we can step out in faith and pray for others. This prayer initiates the welcome and entry to community.

Unity/Collaboration of believers enables us to do greater things for God (Hope)

Abundance of local churches demonstrate the grace of God. God allows believers and organizations with differences to minister to similarly varied people. Our faith in God is what unites us and that can bring us together in order to reach more people and be people of greater influence for God's glory.

Our starting point: Enable the three tenets

Availability, Proximity, and Life-on-Life Sharing
for sake of reaching the lost and interested (Evangelism and Missions).

In our busy, hyper-connected society, being available is the answer to evangelism in the modern world. Discipleship (or evangelism) cannot occur outside of love over time ("love is patient"). Love over time requires time-commitment for one another, amongst Christians, so that the same can be extended beyond that. Recurring small group gatherings are key to this.

Proximity is for relevance. People no longer believe the genuineness of anyone that posts a video or delivers a singular message whether online or through other media. What is truly attractive and credible is day-to-day living out of a Christian's faith. For this, formation of real relationships are required and that can only occur locally. This is what forms communities, which is how churches are formed.

While social media touts that others have it together, people are more broken and confused about life than ever. It is through their being able to communicate through life-on-life sharing that honest and personal conversations can occur, which leads to recognition for their need of God's salvation. More specifically, due to trends today, Christians, no different than non-believers live a facebook-kind-of-relationships, where their life sharing is only the good, while having to hold back difficulties and circumstances. As a result, people pray generically for each other and results of generic prayers have no value. Furthermore, people tend to flock to revivals or similar conferences to ask for prayers from people they do not know. Prayers become generic and less meaningful. As a result, Christians no longer pray for another, nor care for (love) one another (while love is our highest calling). Life-on-Life discipleship/sharing/living points to being honest with one another in environment love and acceptance. Discussion about what matters, including business circumstances/difficulties, workplace, family, and other personal matters, and other brothers/sisters taking notes to continually pray for them, dialogue with them through the situations, and seeing the prayer come to fruition. This is what is attractive to the 'interested', and this is where the Church currently falls short today.

1 The word "Interested" refers to people that may be seeking God. All people seek God from time to time, and it is the Holy Spirit that leads them to do so at specific times of their lives. It is at this time that Christians must be available and welcome them to community of Christ. For more information, click here
