Scripture Reflection by Sang Sur on 1Thessalonians 5:6,16-18,20-21 posted August 2, 2013 - Prayer Tents

Verse 6 says to be clearheaded. How? This is certainly not by being overworked and only by being solely focused on the details of the work at hand.
This relates to the story where Martha is cleaning and preparing for guests while Mary is just hanging out with Jesus. Martha gets angry and demands that Mary help her, while Jesus commends Mary for doing the better thing (see Luke 10:40-42).
What that means for us is: let us learn to rest, be with Jesus, and think bigger.
Big picture thinking, instead of just doing the work. Ask yourself why you are doing the work. Assess continuously if the right work is being done or if you are just being a busybody (see 2Thessalonians 3:11).
Many of us, even in our times when we do not have much that needs to be accomplished, try to remain busy in our minds. Let it go and accept it as an invitation to spend time with the Lord.
If your life is hectic and crazy busy, Jesus offers an invitation to stop, and spend time with God. Remember, Jesus had to do this on a daily basis despite the many crowds that kept following him.
Verses 16-18.
- Be joyful = let go of your worries.
- Never stop praying = stay in a deep relationship with God. Intentionally spend time with God.
- Be thankful always = know that God is in control and trust that all He does is for our good
Verses 20-21. Hold on to the dreams God has given you and continue to grow in them. Inquire God along the way regarding which way we ought to go. Stay strong everyone!
6So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. 16Always be joyful. 17Never stop praying. 18Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 20Do not scoff at prophecies, 21but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.

Prayer Tents is a Christian mission organization that serves Christians around the world and their local bodies to make disciples ("evangelize") more effectively in their communities. Prayer Tents provides resources to enable Christians to form discipleship-focused small groups and make their gatherings known so that other "interested" people may participate and experience Christ in their midst. Our Vision is to make disciples in all nations through the local churches so that anyone seeking God can come to know Him through relationships with other Christians near them.
