Here is something that stuck out to me today: Isaiah 58:10 in the New International Version (NIV) says, “and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.”
Helping the hungry and the oppressed is what a true fast looks like. It is not about not-eating and disciplining our bodies.
I started thinking this is something practical that all churches AND small groups should be doing. How can we find the hungry and the oppressed in the US or in NYC? I am open to this question.
One of my peers suggested this as a way of fasting:
1. Offer (something)
2. Be among (them)
3. Pray for the hungry and oppressed. Then seek God and go (do not stay)
In this, I think our group is awesome. The (1) offering is an environment where businessmen with faith in God can come together and share lives together. Free food is also included. (2) we are amongst other businessmen and professionals. (3) is perhaps something we can develop together along the way.
9Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. “Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors! 10Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. 11The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. 12Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.
